Too many Karen's out there. Did you see Garret's video about Karens where he was walking with his daughter and Thanos talking about leash laws, and how it's more illegal to go 1 MPH over the speed limit than to walk a dog off leash, at least where he was at the time in Florida? Oh man, I laughed so hard my wife and daughter just had to know what I was laughing at. Me? Personally, I prefer someone to be brutally honest with me.

It takes a confident (and honest) dog trainer to show a dog in progress. I'm one of Garret's moderators at DIYK9.com where he has in-depth training courses and Garret will tell you in a heartbeat that dog training is a continuous process for the life of the dog. No trained dog is ever without room for improvement. So many of Garret's videos are shot in a single take, warts and scars obvious, and no editing to remove flaws. I'd trust that any day over a trainer with a perfect dog, and tons of editing to only show the dog at this perfect state, while editing out imperfections. In his courses at DIYK9.com he shows the dog training in action, showing dogs in his program in the process of training. You'll see him training one thing, and while making progress on one thing, he'll end up breaking another item in the process, then correcting and moving forward. He welcomes the challenges and explains them and uses them for training people to train their dogs. I enjoy his pure honesty in training. Garret's fluid in his training sessions. Several videos will start with Garret saying, "When we started this recording, we were planning on recording ABC training, but when I started, the dog showed me it needed training on XYZ, and off we go with plan B, and ABC will be in another video."

I think a lot of the problem people, including myself in the past, have with e-collars, is that a knock-off brand one is not consistent and we just think it's literally a dog taser. We don't like the idea of tasing the dog. However, using them as they should be used, it's not a taser.

Exactly right. When done correctly, 98% of the stims are on such low levels the dog can barely feel it. Check out DIYK9.com for his courses if you need help with training your dog.

2:52 - 3:20 EXACTLY. I had a male CC no one knew what to do with (fearful/aggressive with people and other animals). High energy and needed tons of exercise daily. The ecollar brought quality and fun back into his life, the ability to just be a dog within the safe and clear boundaries and backup in case his independent self decided to do something else than listen to me. Ecollars can be used with lower stim than flat collar + leash and be way more useful and humane. I could take him out for a run where no one was around with the reassurance of 100% control from far away. Ecollars don't train a dog, but as a complement to GOOD and humane training, they are prob the best tool out there in my opinion.
@Troy-Echo

Well said. Garrets said that time and time again, including in his paid courses at DIYK9.com. The e-collar should ONLY be used to overlay and reinforce commands the dog is already rock solid with. Some people say using an e-collar is cruel, but personally, I believe not having a dog e-collar trained (in most cases) is more humane. if a dog is not e-collar trained, their entire life is lived indoors, inside fenced in areas, or on a 6 ft. leash where the dog cannot just roam and be a dog, sniff what it wants to sniff, run full speed in new areas, just enjoy the fun of being a dog. It's either that or a life in a fenced in world or on a short leash. That's a small life for a dog, and to me, that's what's truly cruel.

Clear and concise training. Good Job I prefer training high energy dogs, however you have to have a good plan and stick with it with them. I too have seen many owners not understand how important timing is in obedience.. early in training a reward , I find, works wonders when a run away finally comes to you.

Great work as ever, Garret (quite obviously), thanks for sharing. Interesting that you said e-collar training helps with training in general. Certainly true for my Estrela Mountain Dog: Many people say you shouldn't even try to train a livestock guardian breed - "just let'em do their thing". A neighbor here has done exactly that, now one of his dogs is dead (run over by a car), and the other is chained up all the time. Because he can't control it rudely bluff-charging innocent passers-by, and scaring the living daylights out of little old ladies and their toy-dogs. No chance to make an adult, intact, Portuguese Mastiff, or an Estrela stop mid-charge when something's set them off... Both this neighbor and myself have similar living situations: Our houses are sat on a large plot of land with no fencing. In our case, because it's a rental, we're about to move out of, and in his God knows why he won't fence it. But thanks to e-collar work, my livestock guardian dog gets to run, play, and do those zoomies you mentioned, both on and off land - but one command (and in the worst case 1 - 3 pips on the e-collar, if it's a high distraction), and she's back. Most neat thing about it: She now checks back quite often, even amidst crazy runs/zoomies with the other dog, because she's learned that great things happen when she does that. I dare anyone out there to get a livestock guardian breed dog to that level off leash without ever using an an e-collar - if you can, and have 100% recall-rate under high distractions, then, hats off to you big time - you've got a gift.... Oups, SORRY for the lenghty comment yet again!
@AmericanStandardK9
@AmericanStandardK9 3 года назад
Thank you for watching and the comments which are educational for everyone. Not knowing your situation exactly but try to up the level a touch if you have to hit 1-3 times on ecollar or instead of touch release try a short hold until they stop and release as soon as they turn to come back. You don't want to build up an immunity to ecollar. If you go up in level and get a couple of good reps in (legitimate recalls while in full stride) with one tap or tap hold you probably won't have to use it again. FIDO is running after something, you say "Fido Here", you wait half to one second for compliance, if no compliance heavy hit (tap or hold) until compliance. Heavy hit could be anywhere from 35-65 depending upon your dog. This will add power to your voice. I think you are doing it very well based on what you're saying but I don't want the dog to get reliant on one to several taps of e-collar before compliance, I want the dog to understand that when you recall it means right now or the finger of God will strike them swiftly and severely so that you eventually will have a recall with no E-collar. God forbid you forget to turn it on, it comes loose, you don't have it on, etc etc I want your recall voice to mean "ecollar". Hard to type this out but hopefully it makes sense.
@alexandradittmann8588
@alexandradittmann8588 3 года назад
@@AmericanStandardK9 Thanks so much for taking the time to write this, awesome advice which I will implement; I love the "Finger of God" analogy! And what you say absolutely makes sense; yep, best never to fully rely on technology, as it can fail. I did implement your advice from before (to do 2 - 3 times exposure to a high level to teach the dog how to react appropriately, prepping them for emergency situations) with my 5 year old German Shepherd . TOTALLY different reaction, it's like some basic programming is so different in these sheep herding- vs. the livestock guardian-breeds: She felt it, seemed confused for a second maybe, then immediately came to me, even thought the command had been "Down", but hey, I happily take that as emergency reaction. (My Estrela Mountain Dog , on the other hand, had been snapping, snarling, barking, and jumping in circles as first reaction to the very same level on the e-collar, before finally coming to me and calming down). These two dogs of mine are polar opposites in terms of trainability, it's quite fascinating. But the biggest reward is that, now, I can walk the Estrela on our land off leash - and she doesn't get all riled-up because some neighbor dares to work on their land nearby: She still goes to the border of our land and looks what's going on, but when I call, she quickly comes to me. Before e-collar-training, she wouldn't even check in with me - she'd be gone, darting towards even far-away"threats", barking and posturing. Classical, natural behaviour for a livestock guardian breed dog, but in my book, even the finest natural guard dog needs to have reliable recall.

Check out DIYK9.com. This trainer has paid content that will take you all the way through training your dog to be full off leash. Garrets taught me so much. Dog training is fairly easy once you have someone to show you the right way, what works and does not, and explain why. I've never had a dog that walked with manners on a loose leash. They always pulled so hard I had to lean back to balance the pull, and I'm 6'3" and 230 pounds. Once I went through Garrets "The Perfect Walk" course, then spent 10-15 minutes in the yard with my dog, I've had a dog that walks perfectly on a leash ever since. We trained more int he back yard, then moved to the street where there were higher level distractions and I had to give one more U-Turn correction, and several sudden stop pops, and about 14 months later, she's still walking perfectly. I can take her through Lowe's and Home Depot, about anywhere and she's well behaved and just enjoying the walks and scenery.

@@barrys675Thank you for your service in such a hard time. My father was also a Vietnam vet. If your dog is well trained and knows her commands well, taking that next step to the off-leash level would not be as bad as someone may think. The e-collar is used to overlay on top of commands the dog already knows and knows very well. The e-collar adds reliability on commands and gives you that reliability at a distance. Reach out to info@diyk9.com and ask or go to DIYK9.com to look at the available courses. What you see here is free content. If your dog doesn't need additional training, the e-collar course "Unleashed" is over 30 hours long. The other courses are just as thorough if you need those as well. If you purchase the course, it includes a 20% discount code on the purchase of an e-collar through E-Collar Technologies which is the collar Garret uses in his videos.

Garret has a full set of training videos at DIYK9.com. In the Unleashed course for e-collars he goes into great detail and records a session where he returns an off leash trained dog to a family. He then trains them to use the tools to keep the high level of obedience that he has just spent weeks training the dog. By "he trains them", I mean he sends a human out of the room and has 4 people in the room give him two numbers and two colors. Then the human comes back into the room and using only coins (to represent a food reward), the e-collar, verbal's such as Yes, uh uh, no, and good, he trains the human to do certain tasks and trains them to do these tasks based on the color names and numbers provided while the human dog was out the room. I learned as much from him training a human as I did in many of his dog training videos. I recall seeing a similar video with a lady with a German Shepherd who was a realtor. Here's one video...looking for the second. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-84xSDLiP-ZY.htmlfeature=shared. Sorry, I can't find the second. It's the same lady wearing the same skirt so it should be recognizable when you see the video. Well, I looked more and I just don't see it, but this does show Garret training the couple how to keep their GSD at the peak performance. The dog is back in its old stomping grounds so it will be natural for the dog to try and regress a little, but if they keep up with what Garret shared with them, the GSD will be a star.

@@AmericanStandardK9 ,thank you for the reply. I understand , after your explanation, everything but the reward behind them? Walk up after the “yes” mark, and give them the reward behind them?
@AmericanStandardK9
@AmericanStandardK9 3 года назад
Yes. So, after they complete the command you can throw a toy or food behind them. Dogs are naturally lazy and they are cheaters. So they will think why creep forward for a reward when the last 10 times it was thrown behind them. "Placement of the reward" used as a micro adjustment to tweak positioning. Not guaranteed to work but it's definitely a tool to try. Let me know if it works. Also if your dog has a decent stay you can leave the toy or food behind them already staged. They have to know it's there before the start of exercise. After a rep or a few reps of sit and down or whatever you're working you can release them with a yes. And they will shoot behind them for payment.

Any negatives to using the quick release on the prong collar?
@Troy-Echo
@Troy-Echo 3 месяца назад
The ONLY prong collar worth buying is the Herm Sprenger brand. I've used one for the past 15 months or so and I've never had a single issue with the quick release. Every prong collar will fail at some point. It's not a matter of if so much a matter of when. This is why it's always best to double hook a second collar (such as a biothane martingale style collar in the Amazon affiliate links under 'dog training equipment') in case the prong comes loose. I'm OCD because I know this can happen, so I always hold my collar by one end to make sure the collar isn't twisted when I put it on my dog, and that the links are in place. Every time, no exceptions. Even though I checked, about 4 months ago I was putting the collar on my dog and as soon as I put it on, the collar fell off. I assumed I just didn't click the quick connect/release all the way into place, but nope, it was connected correctly, and one of the prongs had slipped out of place and allowed the collar to fall off. Check out more at the DIYK9.com site for more in-depth info and courses from Garret, the trainer in this video.

Where do you rate Amstaffs in regard to trainability in general? Are they smart? Does their prey drive make it difficult?
@AmericanStandardK9
@AmericanStandardK9 3 года назад
I think they're highly trainable, very intelligent, very strong but sensitive to owner. Once the prey drive kicks in though they could be a little more difficult to manage if you don't have a good training but if you can harness their drive and channel it into their training then you can train them to a very high level. Great dogs

I have a question. I currently own a yr old male husky and I’m looking to add a companion but I prefer a guard type of dog for my next dog. I am looking at the am staff but I’m worried about the breed because of all the bad rep. I know a lot has to do with the trainer but I’ve heard of stories of the breed losing it even if it’s been trained. I have little kids aswell. If the amstaff is not a good choice what guard breed would you recommend

Pretty sure shock is usually used Incase the dog will not listen no matter, but in this case he's most likely just using vibration since the nerves on a dog's neck are sensitive enough to feel a low set vibration (Most but not all).

Does anybody else see the obviously edited aura around him when he playing with bently?
@Troy-Echo
@Troy-Echo 3 месяца назад
Yes. I did see this. The editor likely saw the area around Garret was overly dark in the original video and selected Garret as the subject in Adobe Premiere Pro, and they didn't feather the area around Garret to fade from that higher exposure to blend in naturally with the surrounding pixels. I originally thought it was a halo from Garret being a Saint, but I know better. 😛 I'm assuming the goal was to make Garret not fade into the background. There are times I've seen Garret wearing dark pants, a black shirt, and he's against a dark background with a black dog. Someone has to do some editing or you're just looking at a dark blob. :0)

Love that name, Oreo. That would fit for my dog, but since she's a Husky/Treeing Walker Coonhound mix, Echo sounded like a fitting name since both are very vocal breeds. To my amazement, she almost never makes a sound, with the exception being when our other dog has a toy she wants. Then she'll lay down and just sass her. It's fun to watch. She doesn't do it enough to be obnoxious, so Echo really doesn't fit the way we thought it would.

E-collar doesn't work on my Presa male when he targeted something being off leash - his brain gets to state of no reaction on anything else but there target really quickly! What to do on that case?.. I believe, I'm not reading his body language clearly otherwise I'd catch him before his attention taken away, right?..
@Troy-Echo
@Troy-Echo 3 месяца назад
If you can catch the dog before it is fully revved up mentally, it's easier to redirect and correct the behavior. Check out the courses at DIYK9.com. There is an e-collar course there called Unleashed that covers e-collars. This one course is over 30 hours long and very detailed. You shouldn't overlay e-collar training until your dog knows the commands you're trying to reinforce. You'd get access to Garret on weekly and monthly live meetings to ask any questions for his direct assistance.
