A walk around Amsterdam recorded on the second day of a trip in August, 2022. I start next to my hotel in an area known as the Jordaan and make my way over to Dam Square and then head up to Centraal Station. I swing through some side streets and pass over a number of canals along the way. This was my first ever trip to the Netherlands.
Recorded in 4K at 60 FPS on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

I had no idea you have never been to Europe. You picked a great city to visit! Amsterdam is one of my favourite places as it's such a nicely scaled city. You feel like you are visiting a functioning city but not overwhelming or overwhelmed with tourists running from site to site. Have fun!

Great content, love the commentary and insights (tram tickets are a must), turns out you've been taking about the same path we took back in sept 2022 to get into the city up to the royal palace. I was amazed and chose to travel through the city only by foot, got painful blisters but worth it, we got pretty much all around like that and some places by biking and got to experience a part of the expos, attractions, foods and shops but missed some museums and local exclusives. We stayed at a motel dorm but some drunkard snored through the whole night, couldn't sleep so It was 3 sleepless days, still managed but nearly collapsed after biking. I'm looking forward going back with another friend and for longer, with better planning, missed so much stuff when we were there ! Thanks for the good content ! Keep it up !

Good to note is the construction in front of Centraal was for the new underwater bicycle parking garage, which is now complete, and now means all parked bicycles in that area are removed

Hope you enjoyed this beautiful city! It is very touristy and expensive though. I can recommend other Dutch cities like Haarlem, Leiden, Utrecht, Delft and Rotterdam.

Thanks for filming this! I also visited Amsterdam for the first time back in April and I was in awe. I loved the city and can't wait to go back. Definitely recommend walking in Oud-Zuid area.

The forward tilt of the facades of many of the older buildings along canals and streets is not a result of them sinking. It's a design feature. Most of these buildings also have a beam sticking out of the top floor just under the roof. The upper floors were used as storage for cargo and the forward leaning facades make hoisting goods up easier.

"I don't see any busses" at Amsterdam Centraal Station. It's a major bus hub, too. Just go to the back of the station where you'll find the very modern bus station.

23:00 Ice machines are not a thing in the Netherlands (I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in this country), we just don’t consume ice cubes. Maybe a couple small ones in a glass of soda. You’re very brave to just walk down the most touristy streets in Amsterdam. I just couldn’t.. Every fibre in my body wouldn’t want to hit all these tourists walking about aimlessly and bewildered. I haven’t been to that area for years. There are so many more interesting places to go, even for tourists just visiting for a couple of days.

the municipality is going to renew all bridges in the Raadhuisstraat, these are 150 to 200 years old and built for horse and carriage I hope they also bring water and electricity and so on and renew them. Best regards Frits

E-scooters aren't illegal but there are two main reasons people don't use them there: 1. The main reason is because of the rough roads and cobblestone alleys that will ruin the scooter in no time. 2. Theft. They will be easily stolen so the owner has to take it inside their workplace or residential place.

Ah makes sense. I wouldn't want to ride one there without a suspension.

Jealous... I can't travel now. Yeah, 16:25 Redlight District, you can't film or take pictures there. They will throw you camera to the canal. December 2008, visited Netherlands with Contiki Tour, unlimited beer in Canal Boat, became drunk, and at 36:54, that exact location, where I was nearly hit by a tram.... blimey.

Not real skyscrapers. 150 meters high max. The ground in Amsterdam (and most of the Netherlands) is pretty unsuitable for building anything really high. Plus they completely ruin their immediate surroundings of course.

Main diff w Tor seems to be the canals, architecture, and lots n lots of bikes! Historically, cars must have been inconvenient and expensive to maintain there (expensive gas?) which allowed the bicycle culture to fluorish.

A bit of cultural affinity but mostly policy. Starting with a peak in deaths on the roads with children.

Amsterdam used to be full of cars in the 60's and 70's. It never was an active policy to "ban" them or something like that. It was all about road safety like the above comment states. There are lots of cars, Amsterdam is surrounded by loads of huge highways, including a circular ring road, but the thing is that cars are almost completely separated from other forms of transportation, like bicycles and pedestrians. This means there is no through traffic in the city, its all directed around it, but only destination traffic that gets presorted by the outer highways to make the journey into the city as short as possible. And it works! "Only" 582 people died in 2021 in traffic in the whole country with a population of 17 million. To compare, in the US for example 42,915 people lost their lives in traffic on a total population of 331 million.

Nothing to do with cost, other than cost of lives.

At 5.50 youre at the Westerkerk one of the biggest churches in the city and in front is a triangular platfom onto the canal, this is the Homomonument (yes thats its actual name) a national monument to people persecuted and killed due to their sexuality. Also to note, the moment you said there arent public bathrooms you are facing a public urinal lol
