The municipality of Amsterdam operates several indoor bike parking locations around the city which are free for the first 24 hours and available for longer periods for a nominal fee. These facilities are clean, easy to use, guarded, well-lit and very safe and are available to both residents and visitors. In this video I show off one such facility - I would highly recommend using them if you are in Amsterdam with a bicycle, especially an expensive bike.

Seems that if they could have a man guarding the joint, then they could just have a cashier to take cash when you check out (like with a regular parking garage in a city) instead of all the credit card stuff. But it's still very cool, and anyone without a credit card can still find spots outside in all of those racks.

There is less control, monitoring, and tracking of individuals when you use cash. You have to take steps to keep it and insist on using it some of the time regardless of what anyone else wants. Also I think you can assume that foreigners are going to be primarily on cash and traveler's checks. That was the main means for money whenever I traveled overseas. Foreigners go to big cities like this. So it's probably not a good idea to exclude them by requiring plastic.

The use of a card also serves to register how long your bike has been there. You have to check out with the same card you've used to check in. So when you check in with a card, the clock starts ticking, linked to that specific card number. When you've parked longer than 24 hours, the fee will be charged on that card automatically. Using cash would require an additional system. Nothing fancy, but still. And if the "guy" were busy with some maintenance job, he can't be at the gate to be a cashier. So either the maintenance will suffer or the people would need to wait till the guy shows up.

@@albertlay8927 But why would the bike parking booth guy have to be the same guy as the maintenance man? It's a big place, so two guys. Seems like all it would be is having a parking stub pop up with the time stamp on it, then you go to the booth man and pay when you need to. Dial back the clock 30 years and it was probably something like that anyway. Did they have paying to park bike garages like this in 1990?
