Amstrad CPC Ultimate Gaming guide! Over three decades ago my parents answered my prayers and purchased for me an Amstrad CPC 464. Since its debut in 1984, the Amstrad CPC gave me moments of sheer heartbreak with Outrun, ridicule with Green Beret, but equally moments of celebration with games such as Chase HQ, Renegade and Gauntlet. This video the celebrates the golden moments, a series of high points in Amstrad CPC gaming. Trust me, despite the negativity, the Amstrad CPC had plenty of great games, and here we'll examine the history these great games. In just a single video, the aim is to bring them all together and identify those games that are essential.

As someone who never owned an Amstrad, this video is eye-opening. I’ve played a lot of Amstrad games via emulation and, in many cases, the Amstrad version is the greatest of all the 8-Bit systems. The one game that I wish was on your list would be the official Donkey Kong port by Ocean. Completely wipes the floor with Speccy and C64. I owned a Speccy from 84 until 87 and a C64 in the 90’s but I wish I’d had a CPC now 😂

I had a Speccy back in the day and my mate owned the Amstrad 464, however he had the green screen to go with it. So good to see this vid with the games all in colour. We were spoilt back then, I know we all had the playground banter but the Spectrum, C64 and Amstrad were all good machines.

I loved my C64 back in the day, but I must say that watching this video feels like a whole new world of gaming goodness just opened up to me. A lot of Amstrad games look so unique and vibrant, I may end up going after this machine just to experience it for myself. Keep up the good work! I love your vids and your passion and love for these games really shine through 👍🏼

Although looks don’t necessarily affect the way a game functions, or even add to its usefulness, a pretty game has increased immediate appeal. A dash of colour makes a world of difference. The Amstrad is a colour computer, so it almost felt like an atrocity when it was fleeced with boring mono displays. Thanks for stopping by, please share so others can experience this new world of gaming goodness ☺️

Also I don't think I missed it but if I did I apologise "Werewolves of London" I believe, is one of the most underrated games on the Amstrad. It had a Fantastic soundtrack including Warren Zevons Werewolves of London and was one of if not the first games ever to introduce free roam, from the rooftops to the subways - to the streets to the woods with active on foot, police chases and wanted levels never mind the full day and night cycle and the fact that you transform on a full moon to mutilate those weary passers by lol. An absolute delight for the little seven year old I was and all I can say is thanks to my Grandad for introducing me to it. I really did enjoy this pal and it brought back so many meneories for me. Great video about Amstrad gaming. I'm reading the comments and I'm very surprise that a lot of people owned a cpc with a green monitor, I didn't know that monitor even existed, at the end the colour was the best selling point of the amstrad. All my friends had an Amstrad, but that was the norm in Spain and France.

It was just dirt cheap to buy with a green screen. I didn’t personally know anyone with a CPC until my cousin got one. It was strange back then, we just took it in turn to play the same game for hours on end until we completed it. Wec Le Mans comes to mind. But couldn’t tell you if we played on a green screen or not. Same for the Speccy, played that on a black & white tv for years without realising

Such a well put together video which I'm not afraid to admit has also somewhat changed my mind about the CPC464 I always thought it was a 2nd rate computer, mostly due to the fact it had 'Amstrad' written on it which was synonymous with cheap electronics back in the 80's, but also because it came out quite late compared to it's competition in the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. Seeing this guide it's obvious that you loved this machine which in turn makes you realise that regardless of what computer you received growing up, those gaming memories are priceless and stay with you forever! I feel the exact same way about the ZX Spectrum that I had back in 1982. We also had a CPC464 on our landing with a colour monitor which cost considerably more than the Spectrum but the only game we ever had on it was Yie-Ar Kung Fu! So the Amstrad just sat there for years unused as we had a huge library of Spectrum games to play with as they were far more easily accessible back in the day! Seeing these games for the first time makes you realise that the CPC464 was certainly a capable machine and some of the games do indeed look great! My experience of that time was that it had a lot of direct near indentical ZX Spectrum ports so why bother if you already had a Spectrum? Also very few people had them as everyone interested in gaming on a home computer already had either a Spectrum of a C64! As I say, I personally think it just missed the boat by a few years and it wasn't long until we were all wanting to upgrade to 16-Bit machines like the Commodore Amiga. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for a great video and I now feel far better educated about the home computer that was the Amstrad CPC464 so cheers for that!:)
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay 2 года назад
Wow! That’s probably the longest message ever 🤣 I’m happy you’ve changed your way of thinking. But to think you had an Amstrad CPC with colour monitor and you hardly used it is sacrilege to me. What a waste, you missed out on so much colour in your life 😉 thanks for your comments

So many people are harsh on games choosing the 4 colour graphics mode. The CPC had great high-res graphics that looked so much better than other 8 bit systems thanks to the RGB monitor. I'm glad not all the games were in 16 colours. There are plenty of modern games that use a similar style of low-colour pixel art as a choice these days, and really embrace the restricted palette.
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay Год назад
Definitely had great potential to impress. It’s just that the wrong combination of colour was often used, ill thought out which resulted in not being able to see things properly. Rick Dangerous 2 impo shows Mode 0 is the best. Savage confirms it. Switchblade also shows that 4 colour hi res mode also has a place
@AnthonyFlack
@AnthonyFlack Год назад
@@ClassicReplay - for example, if you search for "1 bit pixel art" or "2 bit pixel art" you find lots of modern examples that match the CPC's mode 1 capabilities very nicely. And quite a few modern games using that style even, like Gato Roboto or Downwell. But it seems nobody outside the CPC community really wants to replicate the look of CPC mode 0. Personally I can't imagine that Inside Outing would have looked better in mode 1, but I also can't imagine Head Over Heels would have looked better in mode 0. Meanwhile the CPC community has always complained about mode 1 games being "spectrum ports" even when they're obviously not, while lauding mode 0 games that actually are direct Spectrum ports, like Chase HQ.
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay Год назад
I think people get into 1 bit pixel art because it’s quicker to do and ultimately gives the look and feel of the original ZX Spectrum or Gameboy. The 16 colour Amstrad Mode 0 simply isn’t poplar with mainstream gaming today because the Amstrad was the 3rd machine. Not that many people owned it. The 4 colour mode on the Amstrad is very close to what you see in a ZX Spectrum, but at the same time not to be confused with the same nostalgia linked to it, which at the time was born out of a severe lack of colour due hardware limits. So what I’ve said should answer your question about “outside the CPC community”. The perception from a CPC gamer, you buy a game, load it up and it doesn’t use anywhere near the colour capabilities of the CPC. David Perry and Nick Bruty mentioned that they really liked working on the CPC because you could have more colour and lovely big graphics. But I personally think if done right, both modes complement the Amstrad CPC really well. I’d still like to see Head over Heels in mode 0 😉
@AnthonyFlack
@AnthonyFlack Год назад
@@ClassicReplay - You don't make a whole modern game in an art style unless you honestly think it looks good. But I know what the CPC community was like, in the UK at least - always crying Spectrum port at the first sign of mode 1. I thought Starquake on my CPC looked great just the way it was, and I still do. Hi res art looks great on the CPC. It looked killer on the CPC monitor compared to the mess that came out of the 48k Spectrum's RF output. I remember all those illustrations Jill Lawson did for Amstrad Computer User in the early days, they didn't look like the Spectrum. And in France with the CPC as the lead platform they seemed to really embrace the 4 colour mode.
@ClassicReplay

Yes, Pirates, but I think that game only worked on the CPC 6128, not the 464. So I never played it properly until years later, lost the buzz factor by then. Dragon Ninja was great, but ruined slightly because every boss could be trapped or easily defeated with the same move over and over, but definitely enjoyed it. Couldn’t stand Match Point, terrible game. Basket Master was alright, but nothing to write home about, but I can see why people liked it. I really enjoyed Kane and Express Raider, I’m surprised I didn’t add them, I could kick myself. Pang is GX4000, that’s a video I’m working on, Xyphoe came late in the CPCs life, but played more like a tech demo than a game. Wonder boy has too many issue to recommend, but I did like it.

Thanks for video. Was wondering about that aggresive bright colour computer in the 8bit games conparison videos. So now i know that is CPC and also im happy that ovetall still didnt beat the C64. C64 games are MUCH more fluid and have better animations and more natural colours. For first seconds some CPC games look impressive, as lightened candy, but soon you notice the palette is just insane and overbight mess. But for sure that Amstrad CPC is qukte good competitor but ill never choose it over C64. C64 is Perfectly balanced machine, for gamers and coders, andany Insane new games came out that look insane. Rick dangerous 2 looks good on CPC :)

Fantastic list. Agree RE WEC Le Mans and ( at last ) Word Class Rugby gets some recognition. What do you think of the Amstrad versions of Forgotten Worlds and Xenon?
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll be honest I didn’t like Xenon, I found it too slow, but it looked amazing. Forgotten Worlds is half decent on the Amstrad, but the controls could have been implemented a bit better and there’s levels missing from the arcade, but I liked it a lot. In fact Gryzor showed the way with arcade conversions, by holding down the fire button you could easily shoot in all eight directions, that would have worked amazingly well with a game like forgotten Worlds, that or two joysticks.

Are you talking about emulation software that alters the look and feel of the game, as seen in RetroArch etc? Existing CPC 464 games can’t be modified in this way currently. What I’m talking about is the Amstrad 464/6128 Plus hardware released in 1990, this improved graphics, sound and music, it used hardware sprites as well. So try Robocop 2, Switchblade, Pang, Burning Rubber including new games made for the Plus model. There’s a new Ghost n Goblins, a Zelda game, and Sonic GX planned
