a great no-nonsense informative video. I have a Honda Jazz seven speed CVT with paddle-shifters and I can totally relate to what's been said about the CVT gearbox in the video. From my end, thumbs-up
I love the CVT on the Lancer Ralliart, it handles track days with no issue, just be on top of your maintenance at all times(Plus installing a reputable aftermarket intercooler will help prevent overheating).
I'd pick AMT. But I never heard of seen them in the US at all and think they might never come here to be honest. But thank you for the informative video.
I am using torque converter, the only issue with AT is a bit more fuel conception than others. I love the smooth gear shift and heaviness when you give more gas. However, I cannot drive a CVT without paddle shift as it gives me the rubber band effect, DCT on the other hand kills me with the performance and its sportiness but it is costly in terms of price of the vehicle and maintenance.
Have owned dct, cvt and traditional tc auto. On congested roads, dct will make you pull your hair out though, its wonderful on uncongested highways. Cvt is okay for your day-to-day errand run but not suitable, if you're in a hurry or are someone who enjoys a little enthusiastic driving. In my view, tc auto is the way to go in any type of traffic situation or drive style. It does consume a tad more fuel but its so so much worth driving this all rounder transmission.
Wonderful finally explained well.. im into fuel efficient cars since i live in a traffic country... Got a city CVT. YEAH And i notice it is really fuel efficient unlike my other automatic cars.
I’m so glad that good knowledge of cars is spreading throughout the world. I haven’t really delved into the car scene in India but I can assume that it’s quite different than the USA. Awesome to see
Wow! I bought the new 2018 Elentra with the dual clutch 7 speed automatic, primarily because it didn't have the CVT / IVT style transmission. I love it! Its characteristics are somewhat like a manual that you don't have to shift yourself. And boy is it quick for a 1.6L. When I buy again, I guess I'll be searching another model or manufacturer that doesn't install these transmission. ...Isn't it an Oxymoron to install a CVT / IVT transmission into a car that badges "Sport"? Though it appears Hyundai isn't doing it with their 2020 Sport model, I do believe many other manufacturers are. There is little chance these transmissions will survive very many hard starts that younger generation put these cars through, especially in hilly locals. I'll gladly give up a mpg or two for a reliable transmission. Once out of warranty, the car owner is in for a real shocker as these transmissions being to fail! $$$$$$
I don't want a computer to shift gears in my driving. Standard Manual Transmission is always the best. It is cheap, reliable, fuel efficient and easy to repair.
Conventional automatic transmission have gone a long way from previous makes. Sure its "less efficient" but the fuel consumption numbers compared to manual transmission has gotten closer and closer with each advancement made. Moreover, AT are more practical than MT nowadays and manufacturers are focusing their R&D more towards automatic transmission.
I wonder why you watch the video. My personal view is why sit there prodding a clutch pedal and shoving a gear lever about if you don't have to? Of course you like to make noise when you drive vroom vroom . Me I'm like a lot of people that watch this video I want to get in a car and go from A to B in an easy, leisurely manner. They gave me a manual courtesy car when mine went in for a service. Hated it kept flashing numbers at me to change gear wtf I'm supposed to be in charge glad to get rid at the end of the day.
Good one .. explains well. Have experienced the power acceleration of Skoda car ... outdoing even a quick manual shift. But if the DSG unit ( a mechatronics device) fails, which is a rarity , then the vehicle has to be towed and expenses substantial if not covered specifically under the insurance policy . This had been my experience in Melbourne Australia.
I love dsg transmission of vag cars. I drive a 2019 polo and my dad has a 2020 superb, both have dsg. Its very quick to shift and their engineering has become very advanced in the last years and with proper care they will last
AM it’s because you’re not suppose to inch forward in stop and go traffic with a dct. You have to essentially drive it like a manual with no clutch pedal. So as you go to inch forward the clutch can’t fully engage the 1st gear which leads to clutch slip which can destroy your transmission.
Yup agree on the jerkeyness part. If comfort is what you want go for a TC auto. If you do lots of highways then a DCT should be fine. Never recommend anyone a DCT on congested city roads. It will drive you crazy, if you're not used to it.
Soon DCT getting more common and the complexity of it lessens gradually due to more advanced technology in the future. Thus it will become more economical to maintain.
The CVT is a very bad idea as is the automated manual. Both are being discontinued due to early wearout. The DCT is also a bad idea as it has clutches which wear out and are hugely expensive to replace. The torque converter auto box has no downside is likely to last the life of the car. A modern AT will have 37mpg compared to its manual equivalent with 38mpg.
If you get a car with a regular AT and program the PCM/ECM to lock up the torque converter clutch as soon as the car shifts into 2nd gear fuel economy will be much better.
The problem with some modern planetary transmissions are mechatronics, needing a TCM reflash for changing a solenoid, it's just too much for me. CVT : no thanks, knowing Nissan (and other brands) history is enough for me. DCT and AMT transmissions are close related in control principles, nevertheless I prefer AMT because the mechanic systems are so simple (like manual transmissions) and AMTs have been used in heavy trucks since some years ago. Well, but honestly, I will choose an AMT only in heavy trucks with a lot of speeds, because in all light cars and trucks, definitely my choice are manual transmissions. Most of the fatigue driving a manual is because the clutch, but when clutch is soft is ok for me, ooh, and a high first gear ratio is really helpful, because you can crawl in traffic jams.
Alfa Romero was the first to use AMT , called Salespeed , now it's been made by Magneti Mareli, I wonder how much difference are there between the Suzuki and Fiat's
I have a 2009 toyota aygo with AMT. It‘s horrible in comparison to a „real“ automatic. The shifts are rather slow. But for me, it works just fine. I live on the countryside and dont need to shift a whole lot. And i have 120‘000km without ever having to replace the clutch. So it is rather reliable.
@Automowheels Hi ... really great video, no nonsense and very informative. As you mentioned maintenance of DCTs is expensive so my question is about the reliability of these transmissions. In India now DCT has also been introduced by KIA and Hyundai. The question is do we see frequent DCT transmission problems being reported for these manufacturers which cause financial pain to customers ???
hi dct owner here, the gearbox is pretty efficient and a good bang for the buck, just don't give to anyone else and take care of the gearbox and you're good to go. there won't be any problem if we use it carefully and in the right way
In DCT, there is something called as dry DCT...like in Venue or Seltos, whereas engine heating problem in heavy slow moving traffic is seen frequently. Can you comment on that please ?
yes, but it´s not a problem anymore, cars in Europe is mostly Dry DCT( cheaper end of the cars like hyundai i30 1.4 turbo and skoda aswall as VW) and there are almost no maintinance on them through the 10 years we have the cars..
I agree, but weather conditions in India is different. We are a Hot country, hence already facing heating problems in Hyundai Venue as well as Kia Seltos.
Cvt’s are still many years away from being reliable and lasting (200,000+miles) Stick to the regular geared automatic transmissions or manual transmissions, both are proven.
I beg to differ, it relies on belt drive which cannot handle large amount of load or power. And it has tendency to break when power is demanded immediately!
Thanks very useful video it will be more useful to do in-depth video for cvt transmission as it is widely spread and it is good in some cars like Honda civic and very bad in others like Nissan Altima
Have an AGS(ATM) Suzuki. It had an expensive repair after just 16,000km. When it works, it is very good. Fortunately it was within warranty. Is this a fluke? Is CVT better? Or perhaps back to old style Manual transmission?!
Not sure many people go buy a car based on the transmission it has. People buy Prius's, Camry's and Civic's by the millions without a single thought to the transmission type it has.
@@dpayne8611 Yes I still am driving it. The car is 3.5y old with 65 000km on the clock. Average fuel consumption 20.6 km/l. AMT works well but is not perfect. It can hunt a bit when traffic is accelerating and slowing down etc. As it drops down quickly to 5th, which is normally great, and when power is needed and you are not driving too fast it will drop 2 gears and vice versa. I can also easily drive 120 to 140km/h under highway conditions and the car is quiet and feels stable. But you cannot demand too much instant acceleration. Overall I am satisfied
Please stop saying Torque converter transmission. Its a regular automatic transmission. CVTs have a torque converter as well, so thats that. There is a gearbox and power transfer system. The gearbox can be manual, automatic with gears or cvt. The power transfer can be clutch or torque converter. a cvt system has cvt box and torque converter. dsg or dct has an auto gearbox but two clutches and is the only system where the gearbox and power transfer system is in one box.
I have one query about CVT transmission, During halt of the car at Red signal, do need to change to P mode from D mode and apply hand brake till we are at halt or We need to only press the hand brake at Red signal, without changing any mode(i.e.D to continue). What is ideal option for CVT engine to last MORE.
I own honda. If its a small halt, press break while in D mode. If it's long halt, put it to Neutral, N. P mode is for parking only, even doors gets unlocked by default in my car at P mode.
I have i20 N8 DCT car. Can I change from D mode to S mode in running condition? Will gears change automatically in S mode or have to be shifted manually?
3:14 pros for amt, at 3:22 pronouncing as AMT and written as AT... Any way good video and good explanation. Which type of gearbox other than manual helps to climb or down climb steep ghat road safely...

Question PLEASE sir. Which transmission offers the most 'engaging/exciting feel', if you know what I mean. (NOT bland/lifeless) I think it would/may be the torque convertor, is this correct ?? - Which transmission offers the most interesting/enjoyable/satisfying/fun/engaging ride/feel if you know what I mean ? I REALLY would APPRECIATE a reply PLEASE sir. THANK YOU and Sincere regards.
Can someone tell from all of these which one is like a scooter, like there isnt any clutch and you dont neend to shift any gear at all just power start accelration and brakes
@@KeygaLP i found put that AMT is the best, when you put it on D it goes automatic and when you put on M it goes Manual so its both automatic and manual
I skipped Baleno CVT as I was scared of single-digit fuel efficiency reviewed by owners! How can you claim that CVT is most efficient? AMT is the most efficient automatic as its pretty same as manual transmission so there are no transmission losses! CVT has lots of transmission losses! I own swift diesel AMT. The transmission losses are next to nothing except during some gear shifts on hills. Also, the AMT cars are quite refined these days. I'm getting mileage of 15kmpl as worse and 25kmpl as best as of now! I'm a mechanical engineer and I know a bit about these technologies. Request you to learn real-life experiences before going on a conclusion. My next car will be DSG or CVT. I admit AMT is good only for the beginner due to jerks and indeed its jugaadu automatic!
