Great video! Just took the auto train this weekend with a roomette and you nailed it. It’s a pretty amazing experience, going from 4 PM in Orlando to 4 PM in NYC the next day without flying.
Very good video. So many are close ups of door knobs or something small and you can't really get a good sense of the layout. This video pulled back so you could see the bed setup, shower, sink, etc. We're taking this with a bedroom in two days. Thanks.
I had to think on how I had 904 miles and realized my mistake: the station lists the train’s route as 904 miles and I quoted that for miles saved. Which doesn’t make sense because you (likely) don’t drive your car on the tracks, but take a different route. Thanks for pointing that out!
Took this train just before the pandemic hit, it does rock in certain areas, but not to bad, we had the full bedroom, actually slept pretty well, sure beats driving, I do not fly, so this works great for me.
Same here. We traveled right before the pandemic. I was lucky to have my parents on the journey with us. My Dad remarked that it was only his second time having to pay for a train ticket, as his father and uncle were both engineers and drove the trains for NY Central and later Amtrak. It was a lifelong dream to share the experience with my Dad. Hopefully that’s not too sentimental.
If it was cheaper I would use it all the time. It really felt like vacation as soon as you board. I have only used the sleepers without a bathroom. Sleeps 2.
Would love to use this... but the closest Amtrak station to me is a 3 hour drive and is also not on this particular route. I love the idea and wish I could use Amtrak Auto Train to go from place to place around the country. I also refuse to fly so driving is often what happens. Getting older and don't like driving over long stretches anymore. Central TN to the AZ desert is a long drive. I-40 is nearly direct but dang... I'm gettin' to old for that.
The reason they only go from Virginia to Florida instead of Boston to Florida is the congestion of existing property, number of crossings, bridges and tunnels, underground stations, Boston, New York, Washington and Chicago. They would need to spend Billions to build a new complete route to handle the high car carriers. I love the car train and wish it went from Boston, but a reality check clearly they will not do it during my time. Maybe some day!
Hi I came up with $839 on the Amtrak site for 2 people 1 way, with 1 car. That was for the sleeper car I reviewed which had a bathroom in it. It included the meals when I traveled. Also I did better booking on the phone then using their website, for what it is worth.
