Here is a collection of Super 8mm sound movie clips I had taken at various places of AMTRAK E8's and E9's in action between 1976 and 1978. At the end, I added a couple of clips of some rebuilt Amtrak FL9's. Those where taken on VHS in 1996
. Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoyed it.
God Bless

Michael Ventura it was definitely an awesome time to see a lot of power for those who got to see it in person but it was a rough time for the railroads, guess that’s why there was so many mergers happening at this time like, Chessie System, Family Lines, N&W and UP merger talks (which obviously fell through) N&W joining Chessie System Holdings (again obviously didn’t happen) and the Burlington Northern mergers

It was a red/black SD40.

The Penn Central paint scheme looked good on those E8s. Amtrak put all the Es through a reconditioning program when they took over, but they're looking pretty worn, at this juncture. Read in Trains Magazine, long back, that Amtrak approached EMD about building more of the E units, but the carbody blueprint had been thrown away, which made costs for such a locomotive - an E10, so to speak - prohibitive.

NATIONAL RAILROAD MUSEUM in Green Bay Wisconsin formerly had E9A MILWAUKEE ROAD 38A donated in April 1987 that needed restoration but the Chief Director was Suddenly Fired in Sept. 1989. Yet several other managers come and go. But in 2008 the other new manager SCRAPPED 38A-E-9-A-M for onl a few dollars 💸 bye!!! He was fired 🔥 ; but sadly he sold out 7 diesels like the 2(two) unique 1949 E.M.D. BL-2's that arrived in 2001 from the WSORR Shortline; and the 2 BL2S were a perfect matching for the 1956 EMD AEROTRAIN 2 CLASS LWT12!!! BUT: the two BL2S were sold to NEW YORK and fully rebuilt for both freight and excursions, and repainted Blue, and many videos 📹 on RU-vid!! But The New York shortline rr went Bancrupt!!! For people who Don’t know, here is how to tell the difference between an EMD E unit, and an EMD F unit: First, look at the Number board. If the number board is squashed into the nose of the locomotive and has more rounded ends, then it’s an E unit. If the Number Boards are sticking out and have a more rectangular shape, then it’s an F unit. Second, look at the Number of wheels per Bogie and locomotive wheel arrangement. If it has a C-C (Co-Co) wheel arrangement, meaning 3 powers axels (6 powered wheels) per Bogie, and 6 powered axels (12 powered wheels) in total, then it’s an E unit, but if it’s a B-B (Bo-Bo) wheel arrangement, with only 2 Powerd Axels (4 powered wheels) per bogie, and 4 powered axels (8 powered wheels) in total, then it’s an F unit. Third, and Finally, look at the length of the locomotive. If it’s longer, it’s an E unit, if it’s shorter, it’s an F unit. PS, Don’t try to deduce E or F units by number of Nose lights, cause it can vary between one and two for both E and F units. And that, my friends, is how you Identify the difference between an E or F unit. And if you Already know this, then You’re welcome anyways.
@garyrobaska
@garyrobaska 16 дней назад
you were right about the E units had six wheel bogies, but only four of them were powered. The center axles on the bogies were just coasters to help with the weight and tracking high speeds the E units had 2 emd 567 12 cylinder engine and the f units had one 567 16 cylinder.

I was talking about where I parked my truck. Right be hind me. When I turned around to follow the train past, there was my truck, and I was trying to shoot over the roof. I have other videos on E units scattered in my collection. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NbIC6Iq2wB0h.htmlttps://ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bo4kgEpHMM8h.htmlttps://ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m2j6rjavZOU.html

Spot right off in the first view, SDP40F's, which had a nasty habit of detailing.

Early AMTRAK and Early VIA were the shit, hell even now VIA is great to railfan, although come next year the P42s will be gone and the F40PHs and HEP2s will likely be transferred to Keewatin to finally replace the old yellow and blues.

@AmtrakGuy365 - I have a question. Where did streamliners like the ones at 1:05 fit in? Where those legitimate engines for people? And what did Amtrak do with them?
