The F40s are some of the most unique locomotives to still be operating today after 45+ years of history. I strongly hope some more get sold back to New Jersey Transit so it can increase the probability of me seeing one. On another note,Tri Rail recently rebuilt their F40s to fit them with a P5 and a midnight blue paint scheme! The F40s on NJT are relatively rare with only 2 still in service, which is why I hope for some more F40s to be sold to NJT because we cannot let the F40PH legacy die under ANY circumstances!!

This video made my day! My family (wife, 5yo and 1yo) just rode Amtrak for the first time 2 days ago, and the F40 known as 90250 was the head. I'm wrapped up in watching and learning all about trains like I'm a kid again! Ever since watching "Shining Time Station" as a boy I have been obsessed with trains (particularly steam locomotives). I can't tell you the joy I felt from watching my 5yo's face light up seeing 520 up close as it rolled into the station.😃

Glad to see these beautiful locomotives still around. Sadly, there could be a chance that several of the non-powered control units will be going away soon as Amtrak recently placed an order for new Siemens Venture trainsets which will be replacing 40% of they’re fleet. This includes the NPCUs as these trainsets will be equipped with cab cars. Since Amtrak’s San Joaquin and Midwest services are already receiving Venture cars those NPCUs will be the first to be retired.

Great video! Meanwhile, up in Canada, VIA Rail still has almost all of its F40s still going. They were all built in the mid to late 80's and received an extensive rebuild in the late 2000s/early 2010s and will most likely be used for years to come. Heck, their P42 Genesis locos will probably be retired before the F40s!

14 Amtrak F40PHs were rebuilt into freight locomotives for the Canadian American Railroad (CDAC). 459 went to the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad as the slug mother for ex-Amtrak road slug 227, while 461 was rebuilt for excursions on the Iowa Northern Railway. CDAC's F40s used for freight service are classified as F40M-2F, while IANR's F40M-2F is used for both excursions and freight service, and is classified as F40MPH-2F.

I saw em haul everything from comet II, rtc-85 "go-karts" to 310 and 293 doubleheading a 10 car train of bombardier multilevels. A f40 hauled the first ever multilevel train i ever took. This vid gets a big fat montrealer's seal of approval.

I live near the Downeaster, most of the time you’ll see Cabbage cars in the Downeaster phase 5 livery, or if you’re lucky, you’ll see a heritage livery. Sometimes you’ll see 2 p42s on it, or maybe 2 cabbage cars if you’re extra lucky. Even though I’m from Maine, it’s either a Downeaster ride or a 2 hour drive to Boston for even more f40s on the mbta. So I love f40s for Nostalgia, beauty, and seeing them every time I’m near the tracks.

Knowing Havre was a service stop I went to the head end of the train, & simply asked the engineer if I could have a look inside, & he said "yah you can come on up", so I did. Doubt you can do that today, which is sad in a way.

NPCUs that were never mentioned: 90200 90222 90225 90413 Some others might have mentioned these units already, but I’m not exactly sure though.

90229 was also the in phase 4 paint longer than any other F40s, and was also the only NPCU still sporting a P5 air horn while still on the Heartland Flyer

I miss seeing these on every Amtrak train. They looked, & sounded great. Wish they would kept some of the fleet, & rebuilt their prime movers. Use them for specials, & shorter runs mostly on non mountainous runs, & extras if needed. I think it would of been cheaper then getting the newer P40/P42's. Good video, though you forgot the mention of the Panama units. Also I heard that a few prime movers went to Poland.
