Amtrak Northeast Corridor at Night- Edgewood, MD

We decided the weather was too nice to stay inside at the model railroad club so we headed over to the Edgewood MARC station to see some nighttime action on the Corridor. A disabled Amtrak in Washington held all northbound departures, making MARC 544 over an hour late while southbound traffic was unaffected. When 544 finally showed up, there were 2 more northbounds stacked up directly behind it. Throw in an Amfleet deadhead move with 2 switchers, and the NS local, and we had a very productive night. NS H04 originates in Bayview Yard in Baltimore and serves the local industries in Havre de Grace.

I grew up in the Grove apts. about amile from the tracks. I used to drink beer and watch the trains go through Edgewood all the time. Great video!!

Great video! It's nice to see some Amtrak/commuter trains of the northeast. I'd love to go railfanning on the NEC someday. 5*****

You're telling me... The older guys I railfan with used to be out there until morning back in the Conrail days when the freight trains ran wall-to-wall on the corridor!

Thats correct. There are actually 3 double tracked bridges in the area. From South to North, the Gunpowder, Bush and Susquehanna river bridges. Between Gunpowder and Bush are the 2 mains in the video with 2 sidings south of the station making 4 tracks anyway. Between the Bush and Susquehanna, it opens back up to 3 main tracks, even though it has to go back down to 2 for the next bridge. A map of Harford County, MD will show how the RR cuts across the bottom edge of the county over the 3 rivers.

@trainzrok The 910 still exists...barely. Every time they take it out of the shops and let it operate as a single unit, it takes a bath. Right now, it's "pair only" unit. It was in Sunnyside Yard last night, with the 926.

cool. i used to live right down the road from the NEC in marcus hook pa. the trains that stopped there were SEPTA and they just use AEM7s on their peak hour trains.

The 2-car train in the video technically wouldnt be a scheduled passenger train, as the 2 coaches were deadheading empty in an unscheduled shop move from Delaware, back to Washington, DC. Notice the 2 switcher engines in front and the FRED on the rear, instead of the normal marker lights...

If what I heard, it had an engine fire and it was never put back into service. 900 and 903 were scrapped in the Chase,MD accident back in the 80s.

The corridor in northeastern maryland doesnt need the same capacity as the NJ/NY area. most of MD is actually only 3 tracks. Edgewood lies in the middle of an 8.5 mile segment of double track between "BUSH" interlocking to the north and "GUNPOW" to the south. These are the locations of 2 rather large double-track bridges over the Bush and Gunpowder rivers. Just south of Edgewood however, are 2 sidings. Look closely at 1:20 in the vid to see the 4 signals at Magnolia in the distance to the south

Yep, MARC has 6 HHP-8's that they use on the really heavy rush hour trains with the bi-level cars.

dude you picked a great spot! i was a little confused with the HHP8 on the MARC train. i've heard of AEM7s in commuter service but never an HHP8! cool video.

i'm not from there, but in watching documentaries i thought that its double track because of the bridges aren't built for quadruple capacity.

Lol, thats what I love about the Northeast Corridor. Unfortunately, the people who get hit by trains don't know how fast they can "Whoosh"
