A ride on Amtrak's train #50, the Cardinal, from Chicago Union Station to Indianapolis Union Station. Obviously not in real-time, just the highlights of the route from a railfan's point of view. Most of the major junctions / interlockings the train passes through between Chicago and Indianapolis are seen, as well as all the station stops on this section of the long-distance train's route. It continues to New York City by way of West Virginia.
Enjoy!

We rode the Cardinal from DC to Chicago back in the summer of 1991, it was all heritage sleepers, diners and lounges then, with heritage and metroliner coaches, we had a Slumbercoach on that trip.

We took the Hoosier State from Chicago to Indianapolis, spent the night and then took the Cardinal from Indianapolis to Culpepper. Great trip

When I rode the Cardinal last, it was using heritage sleepers, including slumbercoaches. We had a Slumbercoach from DC to Chicago, this was in the summer of 1991.

I miss jointed rail - the noisyer the better. The last time a rode the Cardinal (14yrs ago) they were using Superliner consists. This is progress?

Correction at 12:22. You are leaving the GTW at Manyard and entering the former Monon Route. The PRR Bernice Cutoff ended to the northeast in Bernice, where the train entered the PRR Panhandle, and took that to Airline Junction, where it entered the Monon.

Thanks. I noticed on the video that the train went thru Monon but wasnt sure if the tracks were ex-monon since I recall reading that much ofthe line had been abandoned
@Nachtwolf1

The old Monon line to Michigan City has been abandoned from an industry that CSX serves north of Monon (at the town of Medaryville). The main line to the Chicago area is abandoned north of Maynard Jct (where it joins CN's Grand Trunk Western line) in Munster, Indiana. From there it went through Hammond to State Line, where it joined the C&WI passenger line into Chicago. South of Lafayette, most of the line is still there to Louisville, but track from there to Indianapolis is totally gone.

Great video! As someone who takes the Cardinal/Hoosier State between Indy and Chicago frequently, I would really like to see operations moved back into the original head house (hopefully with IndyConnect someday). The current station is filthy and unimpressive.

Great video. Does the train take the old monon thru n. indiana?

Nice video. A few corrections: at 13:30 the NS crossing in St. John, IN is former NYC, not NKP. At 14:04 you are crossing the NS in Shelby, not Schneider (the ex-Monon doesn't go through Schneider).

I've been riding Amtrak for 10 years now. Recently took the Cardinal from Philadelphia to Chicago. Out of all the trains I've taken on Amtrak this was the worst. I had a sleeper car and the attendant introduced himself and I never saw him for the rest of the trip. What kind of service is this? The shower had no water pressure either, that too was a joke. I know Amtrak is operating in the red but come on, a liitle better service.

Does the Cardinal continue on to Cincinnati?
@christopherorourke6362
@christopherorourke6362 8 лет назад
The Cardinal does continue on to Cincinnati Tri weekly. The Cardinal should be a daily Chicago-Indianapolis-Cincinnati train, quad weekly between Cincinnati & Washington & daily between Washington,DC & New York City

10405 is not a dining car. It's a private Amtrak executive car.

i wish that some one had a cab ride video of this line so some one could see what monon engeneers saw when they ran this line back in the day. Some one said that amtrak was going to cancel indianapolis service on this line
@aggiegirl0324
@aggiegirl0324 10 лет назад
They are planning on canceling the Hoosier Line not the Cardinal. Hoosier runs only between Chicago and Indy. Lafayette and other towns along it's line are working to save it.

Oh and I just noticed I didn't realize track at Schneider was one from Kankakee. That line originates in Streator for most part.

The only reason, i can think of, that you would have kept running that MICROPHONE over a sheet of sandpaper was to be DELIBERATELY annoying. The senary was terrible and i wanted to see what kind of options of entertainment, amenities I might get if i took that trip. I had to fast forward because of the intentional noise. No one should have to tell you this stuff.

I like train videos generally but two things bothered me about this one. Worse than the people talking over each other was the constant "crunching" sound of the camera being manipulated by the photographer. Camera 'crunching' is about as pleasant to listen to as grinding teeth.
