Recommendation about taking a shower, I check the schedule and look for stops over 5 minutes and go before the stop to brush my teeth and then take the shower while the train is stopped.

As soon as I heard about the derailment, I thought about you both. My condolences to the families of the victims and prayers to all that were injured. I’m glad you guys are safe. As soon as I heard which train it was, I was concerned because I’m scheduled to take the same train and route next month.

The most surprising thing to me was when I was on the Sunset this summer I noticed that the bathrooms were better than when I was on the Coast Starlight so I asked my attendant about the difference and her response was basically that she had no idea and that they should all be the same. So you guys are better informed than the actual Amtrak attendants, nice job. My experience between a Superliner 2 and a Superliner 1 was that I very much preferred the 1, it felt more outdated but the 2 bathrooms are TINY. Unfortunately the car I was in when I had the Superliner 1 had really bad A/C ventilation but I think it was specific to just that car (like closing the door to sleep at night was kind of a problem, it got very stuffy in there). Overall, I really think Amtrak needs new Superliner cars, period though because even though the 1 bathrooms were better because of size, they are still old and outdated.

HI guys, we travel on Amtrak all the time, for short runs (just one day) we always go with the business class seats. For over night, we use the family room (just for 2 of us), we like the extra room which works for us. We both sleep on the lower bed because neither one of us like the top, there's just not enough head room. The longest trip we have taken on Amtrak is 4 days. We have the Amtrak rewards card and we charge everything on it (to build points) and pay it off each month. We have enough points that we travel for free. We have never paid for a room because of the points. We even used Amtrak points to stay at 5 star hotels. We both love to ride the train and it's a great way to kick back and smell the roses! I love your videos and have seen all of them posted on RU-vid. Love you travels and would love to someday to do the same. Please keep the videos coming, thank you!

I second that, when I heard about the derailment and that it was the Southwest Chief, all I could think about was I hoped you guys weren't on it. Especially since the were fatalities. God keep you safe on your future adventures.

I've learned to phone Amtrak & ask for specific rooms when booking 11 months in advance. I've also learned to avoid Bedroom A which is configured differently with the bathroom facing the door-the room is smaller. I thought Superliners had 5 Deluxe Bedrooms. Maybe things have changed since the pandemic. Extremely informative video for those who've never been in Amtrak's Superliners. Superliner I Sleeper cars did not have restrooms on the 2nd level at first. They added this restroom later & plated over a window which once was dead space. I think with Superliner II's, they configured the 2nd floor bathroom during its construction leaving a smaller 1/2 window which is visible midcar at the fl. windowline of the car. The Transitional Sleeper cars have a smaller window at one end of each car. I've learned to see the difference by train watching & riding.

I took a trip from Washington DC to San Fransisco. The cheapest option was for a family bedroom from DC to Chicago and a roomette from Chicago to Emeryville/ San Fransisco. I enjoyed the spaciousness of the family room, the size of the bed, and having windows on both sides. I found it to be a bit noisy and the location of the single outlet difficult (too high up). I was actually glad I had a roomette for the longer leg of the trip. It was very quiet and as you mentioned, being on the upper level was great for that particular trip with the amazing views. Thanks for your videos - they are very helpful.

We just got back from our first Amtrak trip to the Grand Canyon. We booked a vacation package through Amtrak which we think is the way to go. Thanks to your videos we were well prepared for the trip. It being our first train trip we were still unsure how it would go but the crew was fantastic. Imagine our feelings when we heard about the derailment! WOW! Amtrak came through with a plan to deal with the delays and getting us home. They seem to be dealing with the fallout from the derailed train admirably.

Thanks for explaining why our bedroom turned out to be cheaper than a roomette on our last trip! It looked like a mistake and I expected the price to change by the time I checked out but it was the real deal. Woo-hoo!

I love your show. I booked my time train ride on the Texas Eagle FROM LA TO DALLAS had a sleeper w/ toilet &shower. I found the room needed more cleaning, food was Serviced hot and was very good. Room very very very cold. Toilet did not work on my trip. I'm waiting to hear from Amtrak about my concerns. Your travels can be helpful but I'm not sure I'll do the train again. I'll keep watching your travels I enjoy the information.

Thank you for all your wonderful videos that I have been following since mid 2019. I just completed my bucket list trip on the California Zephyr on June 19th. WOW. We are in our 70's and my poor husband had to climb into the top bunk. But our room was large enough to serve Martinis at 5pm to the friends who traveled with us (yes we brought a cocktail shaker). The bathroom in Cabin A was interesting, had to sit to take a shower. The staff was nice, the food was good and we were even able to get the infamous flourless chocolate cake. We had a ball. The views are so incredible. My friend and I were playing mah jong in the observation car and kept losing our train of thought because we were staring out the windows and taking photos (whose turn is it, what hand am I playing??). My condolences to the people who died in the recent accident. But I cannot wait for my next rail trip. I am planning a trip on the Indian Pacific from Perth to Sydney this winter, and thinking about Anchorage to Denali...........hmmm. Again, many thanks.

I am so glad I found this channel & have been binge watching content all day. Question… I have only ever done one overnight train trip back in 2008 from Chicago to DC. I loved the trip but the one issue I had was I was surprised at how much the train swayed back & forth. I had an entire family room at the end of one of the cars all to myself. I’m thinking about giving this kind of travel another shot, this time going from Chi to LA. My question is any tips (other than maybe taking Dramamine) that will help with the motion sickness. I remember it took a good 24 hours for me to recover last time so just thought I’d ask any tips. I am also hoping of wondering if the tracks west of Chicago to LA are maybe a smoother ride than the Chicago/DC route? Thanks again for this GREAT & informative content. I think you mentioned, but most people would be startled that you pay and book) by the segment, and segments include any time you have to get off. For instance, travelling from St. Paul to Pittsburgh requires a train change in Chicago. So 2 segments for a one way trip. The cheapest coach seat is about $100 per segment. $100*4 segments would be $400 for round trip. The same trip by air costs about $500 round trip for business class. The train is scheduled at about 18 hours one way, and a plane is about 3 hours.

Hello! Thank you for this excellent video. I am planning a trip from Tucson to LA and from LA to San Fran. My concern is the air filtration in the bedrooms. Please share any info about it. For example, is the air from all the bedrooms combined before it is filtered and returned to the bedrooms? Is outside air mixed in with the inside air before it is filtered and returned to the bedrooms? My main concern is the Coronavirus. So, I plan to bring a portable air cleaner. Thank you!

Very good information. Want to add my two cents. My wife and I use the auto train to visit family up north,we live in Tampa Florida. To begin there is nothing wrong with coach looks comfortable but I’m sure you would agree ,don’t know if there will be babies crying or any noisy people. Now the roomett we tried and was comfortable and private but have to walk down hall to bathroom. This upcoming trip we got a room with bathroom. We. Want to be fresh when we get to VA as still have to drive to Philadelphia. Why Auto train, I like having my own car and I can pack what ever we might need.

After seeing this segment, we are considering changing from an accessible room to a family bedroom; the en suite bathroom might not be as important as the sleeping arrangements. Thanks to Rob and his tape measure!!!!! Two questions: do you have preferences for sleeping with the direction of travel (your favorite - roomettes, and bedrooms) vs perpendicular to travel ( accessible and part of family bedroom)? Something I noted is that some of the roomettes show you storing some smaller luggage items beneath the seats, but when folded down into the bed it looks like that would impede (warm) air flow - it looks like there are heat grates along the floor - true or not? Finally, is there a microwave anywhere? I use my rice bag a lot, and I'm sure I'll have some achy places with the accommodations; I imagine the cafe car folks might be willing to nuke it when things aren't busy, but is there one available for public use? Finally, how's the coffee?? Many thanks!!!

Hey guys came accross your channel when Googling over night trains with beds from San Diego (Home) lol my sister said she's always wanted to do this and I never even knew it existed. Since her bday is next month I wanted to surprise her. I love your videos btw and I had a question..why not just take a plane? Is it cheaper or do you just enjoy the longer scenic route? Just curious. My sister didn't give a legit reason so I wanted to know why others decide to take this method of travel instead of just getting on a plane. Safe travels! 🚄🧳

Right now in April 20 2023 Silver Star on the east coast has traditional dinning, maybe the other east routes will have it already too or real soon in not yet.

We got on an Amtrak train from Altoona, PA which we did coach cause we was going to Savannah, Georgia to pick up our son car was at Fort Stewart and they had a problem coming out of New York which we went from Altoona to Philadelphia and it was a complete mess cause originally we was exposed to arrive in Savannah Georgia at 6 am and we didn't get to Savannah till 1 pm!!! What a nightmare 😒😳

What are some perks of a sleeper car

I am going to repost comments I replied to others, as they are helpful to any traveler. Amtrak owns very little of their routes trackage, meaning the other companies traffic gets the right of way, and causes notorious delays in Amtraks arrival, most often some delays can be absorbed by the schedule, but many, you will be flat out late. If you have a transfer to another train or mode of transportation, hotel reservation, etc. keep this in mind, you may be held up waiting for a missed connection, and a open seat, this could vary from a train running every other day at worse case scenario if it has extra seats, [not counting rooms], so extra hotel money needs to be in the budget unless you're camping out in the stations waiting room. Next, if something rattling bothers you, a roll of blue painters tape is sufficient to stop most of it without damage, if not strong enough and you have to result to something stronger, Dollar Tree sells small rolls of duct tape, it's not too strong but it's stronger than blue tape. The tape has more uses when traveling besides on the train, door peepholes in hotels may be installed backwards, (un)intentionally so, a peeping tom could see in, tape it over. Next, that blinking smoke detector light or another light , disturbing you from trying to fall asleep, cover just the bulb too. As the video shows power outlets may be in strange places, or there's not enough for your needs, bring a extension cord, not the kind that's $2 or less, you want one as thick as your next item, a power strip. A power block with multiple USB ports may not be sufficient, I tried charging my phone, on a dual plug in the car as a GPS was also plugged into, it had to be one or the other, both couldn't work at the same time. Lastly accommodations on Amtrak do not lock when you leave your room, your belongings are unprotected. The only time (if it's working) you can lock a door, is if you are in the room, and a bathroom or shower. I would also suggest a full size backpack, you never know what you'll want to take with you separately one day, or need to rearrange what's in your luggage because of purchases and run out of room, a empty one in your luggage usually takes up a small amount of room, sometimes less than a pair of jeans.

I have only stayed in a roomette. I have also only traveled in superliner. Nice accommodations. Do you think the bedroom is worth the $$$ if you are traveling alone. Also any suggestions on sleeping with the whistle blowing all night especially on the capital limited

I am disabled in a wheelchair and the accessible bedrooms are very hard to get. It is why I will probably never get to travel by train anymore. I am stuck with airplanes or van.

Maybe bring a room thermometer to test how much the temperature dial changes the room temperature.

Have any of you ever come across any kind of media that focuses on Train, Airplane and Cruise staff in one room and they compare the differences in the customer base? Didn't you do a video of the two of you on a cruise ship?

So I booked my roomette on the Zephyr in June for a September trip and it cost $1200 or more round trip. How do you get those lower prices? It is still worth it to me. Just for your information I originally booked coach all the way from Olympia to Denver and round trip was less than $500. If I was younger......

If you've checked your luggage, how do you access it en route?

Actually couple things wrong with the information here. Accoriding to a webiste a bedroom can sleep 3 people but it would be tight and have to call in to do that. Also the auto train had traditional dinning in the video you said it does not have traditional dinning.

invest in a charging bank, It will charge your phone without needing an outlet. I got one for when my mom & I run errands, as the car only has the one plug area. both mom & i can charge our phones when doing the errands.

I forgot to mention that we also have AAA.

What kind of water comes from the shower..is it recycled water?
