Step aboard Amtrak's Sunset Limited from Los Angeles to New Orleans. I'll show you what the excitement of a train trip is all about. Includes view of wheelchair accessible compartment. Due to video size, Part 2 is the next video.
I love this Amtrak Train Tour I took a Amtrak Train back in 2000 When I lived in Fresno CA With my Class in School My Class took me on an Amtrak trip to San Fransisco What a sweet lady I love the Lady’s voice too
That was an awesome video Cruise Maven about your amtrak sunset limited trip. I've learned alot just by watching it. In fact, I'm currently planning my trip on Amtrak from Houston, TX to San Diego, CA this July. I'm so excited to do this. I've always wanted to see the Southwest part of the country and thought the amtrak train would be the best way. Your videos have helped me imagine how it will be and I can't wait ! Thanks CruiseMaven
The Sunset Limited averages about 25mph. It takes more time to travel between New Orleans & Los Angeles today that it did in the 1800's when a steam train first ran the route. I got to ride the Limited at 80mph from the AZ/CA border to Palm Springs in 2009, low traffic at that time. A fast ride never happened before or again. Imagine the fluidity of travel if there were tracks for travel in each direction :) If you didn't realize it, most of this Amtrak route is on a track that passes trains in both directions. Trains starting & stopping to play leap-frog really slows down the travel time. In the 90's I rode the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Lame, NM. The ride through Kansas was in part at 100mph. Amtrak long distance routes could be quick with proper track for the routes.
I must say, of all the train vids on RU-vid, yours is one of the most comprehensive out there. I'm thinking of riding the Coast Starlight sometime next October. When was this video shot?
@rbjplay13 ->Absolutely there is room service. Just tell your room attendant that you'd prefer to have your meals in your compartment. It will arrive neatly covered on a tray. It's especially nice on the very long haul trains when after several meals spent chatting in the dining room, to relax in your own room with dinner.
+Amtrak and AWVR Fan ... it'd be even better if there were tracks for both directions of travel so that travel speed could be higher and time to destination less.... possibly more daytime stops for everyone. Possibly the route would even be more popular with shorter travel times.
@EdRingwald Thanks for your nice comment. I agree, it would be wonderful to have a transcontinental train again. But after speaking with several people at Amtrak (from train crew to executives) I have the feeling it isn't going to happen any time soon. Thank you again for watching my video.
they need to have this on amtraks website cause i want to take a trip on the hotel on rails lol sadly the rooms for the palmetto #90 start at 139 but looks like its worth it on very long trips
CruiseMaven, that was an excellent video on Amtrak's Sunset Limited and its amenities! If only Amtrak would restore the Sunset Limited eastward past New Orleans to Orlando (the Sunset Limited's original eastern terminus before Katrina in 2005) it would be a great cross country trip.
Long distance trains in Eastern Europe don't have coach seats on long distance trips. Everyone is in cabin's with bunks. The private bathroom makes the Amtrak Deluxe Roomette a luxury.
Cool Video! Iam a future locomotive engineer for amtrak. I hope Iam assigned to the silver meteor but the sunset limited would be okay too. The thing is I live closer to the NEC (Northeast Corridor). Does anybody know whether amtrak assigns me a division based on where I live or what?
A coach seat I had on a trip from Yaroslavl to Moscow had all the amenities and orchestration of the narrators roomette. Though the roomette has privacy the coach seat did not. But then the roomette has a high price to pay for the privacy. Amtrak coach travel could incorporate bunks. I just wonder if the American citizens riding Amtrak would respect the bunk enough to not leave them unclean or unable to be prepared for the next Amtrak guest. Guys wearing their pants low and siting in seats with only their underwear between their butts and the seat for long hours doesn't make for sanitary coach seats.
This route needs to be double tracked. A track for each direction of travel. All the starting, stopping and running slow just to finagle past on-coming trains is at times frustrating. I've been on this train when heavy freight traffic forced the train to stop twice for 4 hours waiting for crew changes, The present 25mph average speed is just too slow.
