ProTip for these shared showers: bring a pair of flip flops with rubber soles for the shower to protect your feet from picking up bacteria and to stop you from slipping.

My family & I have been riding in Amtrak's Superliner Sleepers since the 80's & they've held up well. The only changes I've seen through the years were seat reupholstering, new curtains, & faucet upgrades. An important upgrade was placing a restroom on the 2nd floor of their sleeper cars. Yes, we had to go downstairs to use the john in the 80's. Good job!

This looks exactly like what I was riding last May. Made up the bed shortly after I got inside it, as I need to keep my legs from swelling. I used the upper bunk for my things, as it was only me in the roomette.

I really appreciate all your tips. I’m taking a trip to Texas. My trip is broken up into 3 trains and 1 bus. I decided to take a roomette for the evening part. It was only a little more expensive, but I’ll get to rest after dinner. My bus is in the middle of the night. So I’ll be able to go to bed early, and avoid screaming kids and talking. I haven’t taking a train in 35 years, so it’ll be an adventure for sure.

I just got home today from a trip with a Superliner I from Ft Worth to El Paso and a Superliner II on the return. I had done Amtrak coach in the past but this was my first sleeper trip. I want to try some of the routes like the Cal Zephyr, Pacific Coast Starlight, Empire Builder etc. and wanted to do a shorter trip to see how well I fit into the Superliner environment. I am 6'6" with size 14 feet and built like a tight end and don't want to invest in a longer trip if I can't fit the bed or showers. The trip from Ft Worth to El Paso is on the Texas Eagle. The Texas Eagle overnights in San Antonio where it merges with the Sunset Limited for San Antonio to LA. Likewise on the return it overnights in San Antonio where the two routes split for their returns. Thankfully, I found the lower berths had about an inch to spare for me so I was able to sleep as well as one could during the switching of cars during the night. Not only are the restrooms larger on the Superliner I but so is the shower. It was considerably easier to move around in the shower in the Superliner I . I know I am not normal but there are people like me out there who would probably appreciate the knowledge of what to expect. One thing that greatly disappointed me was the food service on the Texas Eagle. The Amtrak web site and press releases had stated that full service dining has been restored on the western routes. Apparently Chicago to San Antonio is considered an eastern route? The web site shows the Traditional Dining full service menu on the Texas Eagle but we were only offered the Flexible Dining menu between Ft Worth and San Antonio. From Ft Worth to El Paso, lunch and dinner were from the Flexible Dining menu (FTW to SA) and breakfast and lunch were from the Traditional menu. On the El Paso to Ft Worth trip, dinner was from the Traditional Menu and breakfast and lunch were from the Flexible Menu. I am not a picky eater. I thought the food was pretty good in my college cafeteria. The Traditional Menu is pretty good. But the Flexible Menu is pretty bad. Like so bad it makes airline food look gourmet. Like the kind of frozen food you find in the 99 cent bin. They ought to offer a discount to passengers who are forced to take or leave the offerings from the Flexible Dining menu. The Flexible Dining menu is a step down from the offerings in the Cafe car with its microwave pizza and microwave burgers. Anyway, I learned a lot and will use it to plan my next adventures.

I can’t wait until we are able to take an Amtrak trip! Your videos have been a great inspiration! A question for Rob: is it easier for you to climb the steps vs using a ladder to get to the top bed (depending on which type of car you are in, of course)?

Hey! Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your channel. Because of it, I just booked a trip in a roomoette from Emeryville all the way to Fort Lauderdale FL! I'll be on the Zephyr, the Capital Limited and then the Silver service to Florida. Thank you so much for all the great information and I look forward to seeing more before my trip in January. If you guys answer questions, I have three. Is the hotel in the video you posted about the trip from Emeryville to Chicago walkable from the station? I sure hope so! Any good places to buy snacks around either the hotel or station? The last one. If I were to bring a small lunchbox size cooler, would I be able to get ice for my snacks and drinks? If you can answer, I'd apppreciate it. If not, maybe in an upcoming video! Again, thank you both for sparking my train interest aand convincing me to do a trip!

Your videos have given me so much useful information. I'm traveling to Cali in Sept and booked myself a roomette, I have a question for you in regards to the 'bunk beds' I tend to be a 'restless sleeper' and would like to use the upper berth for sleeping and leave the seats in the 'upright' position in case I can't sleep and don't want to go to the observation car, but want to read or something(I prefer to sit up when reading)anyways my question is if I use the upper bunk to sleep will it be a problem for the sleeper car attendant to store the mattress that's used for the lower 'bunk' or is it possible to use the mattress meant for the lower bunk on the upper one in other words can I use both mattresses on the upper bunk? I don't want to be a nuisance for the car attendant but I really would prefer to sleep 'upstairs' and keep the seats for sitting in. Any help/advice you can give me in regards to this is greatly appreciated

i have a question… The intro to your videos, say affordable travel… I have looked into two or three different train trips and getting a roomette over the past 18 months and.... I was a bit shocked at the price there between $500-700... which was shocking, I wasn't expecting them to be that expensive (for that you can fly).. so my question is, do you have any suggestions on how to book a lower price for the roomette such as I'm over 55 but I am Not 62 so I'm not technically in their eyes, a senior citizen and I know sometimes a different times of year prices can be lower… Any suggestions?

Is the Coastal Starlite an Amtrak Superliner 1 or 2? And what are the important differences in your opinion?
@GroundedLifeTravel
@GroundedLifeTravel 2 года назад
It is both, most superliners carry a superliner 1 and a superliner 2, but there really isn't much difference in them. The much bigger difference is a viewliner. The superliner 1 has bigger bathrooms is the main thing we notice.

Because the prices change when the train fills up sooner you buy the cheaper the ticket is. I will make up a fictional example to just tell you lets say right now is Septermeber 15 and you want to take the train December 15 if you buy the ticket on Sepetember 15 it might be $600 for 1 but if you wait till October 15 it could go up till $800 for 1, I am doing in for the roommates.
