Saturday 10th March 2012 saw the world's largest airplane land at Glasgow Prestwick International to pick up what looked like a BIG blue generator - must have been heavy and in a hurry to be somewhere!
This video follows the aircraft in to land on Runway 31 and shows the loading of the cargo through the nose.

Plane on this video created in Ukraine. Initial design was developed in the USSR on Antonov CB in Kiev (capital of Ukraine). Parts for this plane made more than 10 countries include Russia and USA. The Ukrainian pilots on this video very cool guys. "Mriya" word translate from Ukrainian like a "Dream". Have a nice day for all.

It really p***es me off people keep saying this is a Russian aircraft. It always was & always will be Ukranian. Mikoyan-Gurovich is Russian. Tupolev is Russian Ilyushin is Russian. The Antonov Design Bureau is UKRANIAN!!! The USSR (Russia) chose Antonov to design & build a transport aircraft in their 'Race For Space' against the USA as Antonov build primarily only cargo aircraft not fighters or airliners. Which is why Antonov was chosen to build their transport aircraft GET IT INTO YOUR HEADS ITS UKRANIAN NOT RUSSIAN!!!!
@TheHallucinati
@TheHallucinati 10 лет назад
Actually the plane is Soviet built, not Russian or Ukrainian. Antonov bureau in Ukraine built no cargo aircraft since Soviet Union was dissolved. The Soviet people were not petty nationalists. Many Soviet people participated in designing and building this plane - not only Ukrainians and Russians but Belarusians, Kazakhstanis, and many other nationalities. Antonov himself was Russian - his culture and first language were Russian.He was born in Troitsa (Moscow region) and lived and studied in Saratov. It is however possible his remote ancestry was both Russian and Ukrainian, or possibly Belarusian just like mine. In USSR (were I was born and raised) the language of your republic (Tajik or Belarusian) was compulsory in schools. You had to know both Russian and your native language. USSR was a true multicultural society. Ukraine wasn't only inhabited by Ukrainians and Antonov bureau employed designers and professionals of all nationalities. Antonov 225 was the largest Soviet plane and the largest airplane ever built. It shows what people can achieve when they leave aside their petty nationalistic bickering and cooperate, sharing the same dream. Before you make such an adamant statement - check your facts. Ask former Soviet citizens, -those who were adults at the time - they know these facts rather well. We the former Soviet people will not allow lies to be taught and told about our common history, and we will correct those who are mistaken about it and rebuke those who purposefully lie about it to achieve some shady political goal.

@OBVideo
@OBVideo 11 лет назад
@OBVideo
@OBVideo 11 лет назад

Perhaps you should brush up on your history, at the time of its design and build, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union aka Russia and it was built as a Russian shuttle carrier prior to the berlin wall collapsing, the fact that Ukraine split from Russia after the berlin wall collapsed does not negate the fact that its an Aircraft designed and built by the Soviet Union for the Soviet Union.
@OBVideo
@OBVideo 11 лет назад

So am I right in saying that the AN-225 is Ukrainian but built to Russian specs to carry the space shuttle Buran? So it would follow that its "smaller" sibling (the AN-124) follows the same trend but transports Soviet military hardware like the Roll On/Roll Off car ferries in Europe. This means that the former Soviet government was just one of Antonov 's customers. Does this make sense?
@RussianFabjan
@RussianFabjan 11 лет назад
It was originally built in USSR. An-224 was mainly designed for carrying Buran (russian analog of US shuttle). After collapse of the soviet union project was frozen. It was till 1998 before it was re-introduced as commercial heavy transport capable of carrying almost everything. (in 1998 it was Ukraine not Ussr anymore so it's considered as ukrainian airplane)

This plane the Antonov 225 and the manufacturing Plant in fact belonged to the USSR. Ukraine just inherited it just as Baikonur Cosmodrome was inherited by Kazakstan. This aircraft is a marvel of the HUMAN imagination. I can guess where all the "dislikes" originate from simply due to the fact it's a Russian creation. Regardless of who or where it's roots lay, it's an incredible achievement to aviation. Period...
@johng669
@johng669 11 лет назад
Western commercial aircraft companies can make an aircraft like this without copying. It's not a big deal. The question is whether there is a purpose for such an aircraft. Since the purpose was to transport the Buran Space Shuttle there was only one aircraft of this type made. The USA already had 747s' which were capable of transporting the US Space Shuttles from California to Florida. So there was no need to create a new aircraft.The Spruce Goose is larger in size.
@Sinkevi4
@Sinkevi4 11 лет назад
The An225, originally developed specifically to transport the Buran, was an enlargement of the successful An124.The first An225 was completed in USSR 1988 and a second An225 has been partially completed.The completed An225 is in commercial operation with Antonov Airlines carrying oversized payloads.It holds the absolute world records for an airlifted single item payload of 189980kg,and an airlifted total payload of 253820kg.It has also transported a payload of 247000kg on a commercial flight

Because there's never be enough passengers to fully load such huge plane. It can carry up to 250 tons. It's more than Boeing 747-8 weights. Also probably it's not as cost-efficient as other airplanes and used only when something really big needs a lift.
