Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

In Portugal, we call quinces, marmelos. We use the pulp to make the marmalade and the seeds and skins to make jelly. It's long lasting and it's delicious. You should try some! Best regards! xx

Olives have a two year cycle, so you have usually every second year a bigger harvest... Also the cutting of the tree is very important... If you cut too much, you get too many non producing shoots, if you cut too little, you have dried up branches.... I am sure you will find the balance over the years.
@paesDalmeida
@paesDalmeida 10 месяцев назад
hi ! If you reduce the crown of olive trees by half or a third, you can only expect them to produce half or a third as well. 🤔
@FrankieOffGrid
@FrankieOffGrid 10 месяцев назад
They actually produce more after a prune. They work on an almost 5 year cycle of productivity with the 3/4/5th years being the most productive before dropping off. Two years ago we harvested 450kgs from 60 trees, this year we have 250kg from 100 trees. We should be expecting an average of 30kg per tree.

Do you know that you can sprout chicken grains like barley alfalfa, sunflower seeds, wheat, corn and millet which is extra nutrients and you'll need less. You can google sprouting grains for chickens. You cab also make sprouting boxes using pallet wood to make a box about 15cm high with chicken wire across the top after placing a soil layer then sprinkle seeds on top and water. Once the sprouts poke out of the wire the chickens will be picking their treats.

Hello, I’m sure you know how delicious quinces can be in apple crumble, tarte tatin , compote, marmelada, and quince jelly or in savory dishes like tajine, but of course if there are too many , it’s great that the pigs can eat them and they don’t go to waste, also a bowl of quinces in the kitchen smells wonderful, carry on with your beautiful videos and really enjoy your lovely menagerie 🐕 🐈 and garden, all the best Liz

I understand your worries about a tree falling on your home, but you can now see the positive side of having trees close by, they give you shade in the hot summer, plus did wonders to make your home look nice and inviting. Sorry to say but now your home looks like a bunch of outhouses. Instead of burning down all the mimosas maybe take some time to appreciate how much they enhance your property

Want to help me out and just tell me as is looked yummcious. Sometimes i sweet potatoes wedges (skins left on) springle with cajun seasoning. Then just before serving i generously sprinkle grated cheese on top. Do you or Ange not make quince jam? I know the pigs would live their treat but shame if they got to eat all of them. have loved the journey of your off grid adventures, (just caught up) though i cringe every time those beautiful wild flowers are cut (strimmed?) & all that olive wood cut! i'm a knitter & recently discovered olive wood knitting needles, just wondering if you could perhaps find a supplier to take some of your olive branches? just a thought, might be a little more income too also did you know that most of your woody herbs make great fire starters? they also smell great too! it's wonderful that you found other friendships & help where you are, some of those jobs would have me totally bamboozled too! Uncle Nick is such a blessing isn't he? sometimes when a citrus dies & re-sprouts from below the graph (depending on the root stock) you get what we call a 'bush lemon' here in Australia they are the best lemon trees as they tend to be very abundant, your small tree could be one of these but for the moment it might be wise to take off half it's flowers as it has very thin branches, perhaps a light prune of the real skinny ones, so the rest thicken up & get stronger (there are RU-vids of this) have also wondered why you don't collect your rain water off your roof to drink & use? the chooks tank would be better attached to the roof of their coop less work too loving the animals following you all around the farm & helping your videos are such fun to watch, thanx for sharing
