The number one thing to understand about life at a small college is that the campus is happening. In a big city, your options for recreation may involve shows, concerts, and cultural events well off the campus grounds. There’s no denying that those are attractive options, but there are costs associated with them - tickets, travel to and from, safety, and scheduling conflicts.
On a small campus, those same things happen, too, but they occur on campus. The shows, concerts, and cultural events are determined by student interest and made possible through student affairs programming. The variety of big-time entertainment that comes to campus is impressive, and it exists for our students to partake in, with little to no cost, on days and at times conducive to the student schedule.
Last and not least, let nature be your playground. Our campus is nestled in the majestic and remarkably accessible Blue Ridge Mountains. The Outing Club provides trips and equipment to take it all in. Money magazine called W&L one of the 10 best colleges for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether or not you’re an avid adventurer today, you’ll have the chance to hike, bike, paddle, and explore in one of the most scenic settings anywhere in the U.S.
