An Actual Review of The Surge 

Hi all, it’s been a while. As you can see, this video sorta spiraled out of control when I was working on it pretty quickly. I know it’s been a long while since I’ve posted a review, but this review is about 3 times as long as my reviews are typically, so hopefully now that it’s up you may understand why (also Hurricane Harvey aayyyy I wanna die). I’ve spent so much time staring at this video for the past few months that I’ve hit the point where I genuinely can’t tell whether or not it’s good anymore, so if this is a weak review after being MIA I’m really sorry. Long form stuff like this is a lot of fun but it’s also really stressful, and I’m having a hard time deciding whether or not I think it fits my style of reviewing games. I might eventually start doing more reviews that are longer like this one, but for at least the next few videos I want to keep them shorter so I can upload them in a reasonable amount of time. "... or that women who own horses tend to be unstable." I must have watched this video almost a year ago, and have watched it more times since, and only NOW did I get the pun.

Y'know, when I first saw the review, I was like "Wow, this video is pretty great and funny! The Surge seems super shit so I am not getting this game. " Then the game appeared on ps+'s free games list, and I downloaded it. I'm happy to say a lot of these problems have been fixed. Sticky Locking works properly, switching enemies is now different, you can change settings so you no longer hear "I was boooooorn in a prisuun", and overall gameplay and balance seems better. It still is not better or harder than... Uhhh... Crash Team Racing, but the improvement s make the game a lot more enjoyable.

I traveled 2 hours to buy this game just because I enjoyed this video that much and was disappointed to find out, it's been fixed. Almost every problem you mentioned with the controls has been fixed. Target locking on limbs is easy, changing targets is easy, and even the big sister fight was easy since you now control the camera in combat. So now it feels like a bad Dark Souls game but that's still a Dark Souls game. Haven't finished it yet (I'm about halfway through R&D) but I'd still say that I'd recommend it. Story still sucks though so there's that.

Wow you made a review on the Surge without directly referencing Dark Souls and could actually point out what's wrong with the game as a whole without comparing it every 10 seconds, i'm fucking impressed.

I know it's nitpicking, but you openly nitpicked with it first so whatever. The Free Wifi Lady's quest ending in just a audio recording is actually not the end of your interaction with her. Somewhere near the end of the game you can find her behind a door in her own room which leads to a shortcut iirc, and she does exactly what you were hoping and depending how you respond to her she will attack you or beg you to leave so she doesn't because she can't tell who she is anymore.

40 minutes holy shit count me in.

I agree on the bad story and the bosses. But I loved the combat. It feels like we've played entirely different games. I wonder if the devs heard your complaints because you can disable the medbay music and the commercials in the options menu.

I re-watch this video periodically. This guy would be one of the best VG reviews on the platform if he made more than one video a year.

You missed the last part of Irina's questline, she ends up being a security guard near the end. Its implied that the implants used in the staff let the company reprogram people to do whatever menial task they are required to do. I didn't mind the surge, it was a good replacement to Dark Souls, but I felt the difficulty curve was too inconsistent for my taste.

I'm waiting a bit so with I can watch this at my 1080p monitor and not on my phone, I will also bring chips and a soda. This shall be great

To provide context to an earlier comment on your outer wilds video, this is the video that made me question things and introduced me to your channel. The ONLY way i found it was going through a couple and recognized the outro music. I can't help but have said what I loved about your channel on the video I discovered it through. The verbose repertoire of vocabulary expanding on the ideas combined with the complimentary simplification and interjection of "fucks, shits and damns," to alleviate moods and overall capture emotions beyond tonality with them. It shows care and pure understanding of the topic you're presenting not only as a critic but as a person and inserts humanity into the review. Your pacing overall is impressive and despite length captures my ADHD ridden brain of pure anxiety and distractions attentive without demanding it. Transitions are either very clean or very hard cut without predictability on first watch. The tone and control of your voice in newer videos is appreciated and also appreciated here. Your obvious ephasis or emotional intent in what you're saying is clear and entertaining or relatable or overall provides direction to what you're saying without revealing the end destination. I by far have made you one of the three total long form content channels I watch, and one of my two review channels. The last point is your humor. You aren't afraid to ride lines of offensive or dark, but at the same time incorporating your own flavor of these when implemented, making it not only entertaining, but allows for relations and endearment of character. I have never had a content creator present their videos in such a way and if your content maintained quality over quantity I would never be disappointed even if I ended up rewatching videos so many times I wound up like Warren in the video above in r&d when he respawns. I even use your videos to fall asleep to because they've become a bit of a respite and comfort for me on occasion. You provided me a home and that I can relate as one of if not my absolute favorite content creators is trans too? I couldn't help but be excited by that, even if unimportant in relation to content. There was more to the character, and I appreciate you letting us in on that in your review of Stray even if you didn't have to knowing the culture of the internet. You are underappreciated, underrated, yet someone I'm overjoyed to have in this world. Please, if you change, then make sure you stay the most human owl out there. The Surge is one of my favorite games of all time (I did play it in 2020 with everything fixed) and this review that rips the game a new asshole I still somehow find to be a love letter to the series. And every now and then I just have to rewatch this to remember how much I love Surge.

The Surge, my god how I love it, and with the second one coming, I cant wait to jump back into another souls like game that takes place after the invention of electricity

I played through the game and that Irina Beckett character AKA Wifi as you called her, appears somewhere around the the offices where the AI dies with all the equipment you gave her and then you can either leave her alone or talk to her enough until she gets aggressive and tries to kill you. If you kill her, she leaves behind a metal skeleton of some sort and that's the end of her. You're supposed to give her the staff and full armor in order for this to happen I believe. I enjoyed the game for the most part, I agree that it has a lot of problems as well as a lot of good things about it, but I actually like the combat, maybe it's because I played it with mouse+kb and adapted to switching between targets and between body parts. I hope some day they'll make a much better new game.

I don't see this as a waste. Few game reviewers have the sharp, unabashed sense of humor and sleek, personal confidence to tear a game to pieces or put it on a pedestal, but you do. You make reviews how YOU want to make them, not how you think your viewers want to make them, and I admire that. I love how you make a seriously funny joke that slams harder than a feminist's bedroom door after she lost her nose ring before I even realize it, with no long, grueling draw-in for some heavily scripted eventual one-liner (the irony in the sentence gave me a tumor). I LOVE your reviews. Always have, always will. In short: 8/10 IGN: needs more supply drops

FYI, Irina Beckett starts acting like a security guard after she equips their gear. Similar to how everyone in the factory went insane, the gear is brainwashing her. I gave her the pieces of Gorgon armor she was missing. She appeared again later on, as opposed to just leaving. She went all security-guard on me and told me to go away or she would have to kill me. She dropped me a named staff.

This is still my favorite of your videos. I have always enjoyed the content you produced. It’s a shame you haven’t posted in a long time.

Oh man I really enjoyed your video xD. As for the controls I'd like to add that playing it on PC, the controls work pretty good for me - I can scroll through body parts with the mouse wheel, which is fast and precise. You can switch enemies with the X-Button and lock in them with a push on the mouse wheel button. As for the story and surrounding: I just finished my first visit to R&D and the video in the spawning area is f*cking annoying. Anyway I feel like many patches have been implemented since you played this game because most of your complaints about camera, crashes or technical issues didn't occur to me. Besides all that, very entertaining review, I didn't quite agree to all of it but you made some fair points to the games' limitations.

Despite watching this video more times than I can count. I just noticed how you put The Ancient Solitary Reign in there. I swear every time I watch a video there's something more for one to discover and all these little gems that keep these videos entertaining. Can't wait for your next project.

15:32 On my like 5th or 6th rewatch of this video and I noticed that when he says "It's been a minute" He refers to 14:13 which is about a minute. Subtle but Its things like these that help me watch these reviews several times over.

god, don't ever play LOTF then, if you thought the weapon swings were Heat death of the universe slow, then Lords is Heat death followed by a second Big Bang and another heat death levels of slow.

I'm sure this is monumental margins of more work for a fraction of the thanks from your audience, but I really think these longer analyses shine with your style; it gives you time to decompress and better address the points that stick out to you, and better develop jokes... or, you put more in. I just wanted to say this was absurdly well done, and made me not only care, but know much more about a title I never cared about before I started this video. So, thanks, this was really good, and I hope you consider longer formats like this for games you really want to sink your teeth into
