I’ve got 900+ hours on this game. Thing is, 70% of those hours I spent trying to relive the good ol’ days. I miss when this game was one of the first video games I fell in love with. I miss the shenanigans my long gone friends and I used to get into, roaming about this strangely inviting universe. I miss those feelings, so so much. I’ve spent so many hours by myself trying to recreate them but no matter how hard I try they stay a distant memory. Yet, I keep coming back to this game. I will forever continue to hold this game close to my heart. It’s one I hope to share with new friends, if and when they even come about.

Bro I feel the exact same way. I found this game later in my 2nd year of college but the memories of playing with my brothers have never left me. Those first few hours sitting in my first little wooden cabin and feeling like the world would never change. I sadly lost that file when I went to my new PC. I hope one day to be able to play with others again this game is such a wonderful masterpiece.

I often think about if I could have a moment like that background image... To sit in my own actual spaceship with a close friend, taking sips of whatever drinks I had in the fridge of the kitchen, staring out the window at a vast world. No need for talking or doing much of anything else, and that's ok. Every now and again we'd see a ship take off or head in for a landing, maybe we'd chuckle at the name or the paint job. But we'd otherwise just... sit there and watch it all. To sit there for a few hours and just listen to the soft hum of the engine and the faint music playing off of a kit bashed radio next to the cockpit... That'd be the day, lads and lasses. That'd be the day. Edit: holy shit I did NOT expect to get this many likes, thanks so much ya'll :D😌

This! This right here is the kind of setting I wish I could live in. Just imagine living so far into the future where technology is so advanced that owning your own personal starship is the equivalent of owning a car. Where flying to a different planet is just like taking a road trip to a different country. Being able to befriend different alien species and/or having some kind of advanced ai/robot companion to accompany you on your travels. And then, of course, after a long travel across the galaxy, just sit back and relax while admiring the incredible view of the planet you're orbiting. God I love science fiction.

The music is so good in Starbound. The memories of Starbound vastly out weight my actual love for playing it. The first 30 hours it's like a brand new adventure. A new universe waiting for me. But later, you notice that NPCs say the same thing. Quests are repeated. The planets never have anything new. It becomes predictable. You can ignore it at first, but then it becomes grating to play. It's an infinitely broad sea that's only a few inches deep. I will forever remember this game for the sense of wonder it gave me and my friends. We looted, showed off our ships, and built cities. We had genuine fights and laughs over weapons and cool decorations we either stole from towns or brought back from deep underground. I remember getting excited everytime I found a new biome, but then I realized most of it was just for show. Nothing was alive. It was all behind a display case and I could only imagine what it would be like if Chuckle Fish put in a bit more effort. It's tragic that I cannot bring myself to play it again. 500 hours in-game is enough.
@MultiDyre

My experience with the game was exactly the same as yours. I wish, instead of making a bajillion purely computer-generated planets (which is admittedly cool in its own way), they made just like, 50 or so and took more time giving each unique NPCs, towns, quests, etc. Would honestly not have taken more work than the work they already put into the game.

Rambling warning, here. Starbound... oh Starbound. My favorite game, despite it's low popularity and overall issues. A game of running around, exploring the universes, with so many possibilities. You want to build a giant medieval castle? Go for it. A wizard tower on top of a hill overlooking said castle? You can do that to. A treehouse that can go the entire way up to the asteroids in the sky? It's possible. Starbound is my favorite game. It always will be. I remember being younger, and beaming down to the starter world. I didn't know what to do, or why to do it. My first instinct was to build a house. It wasn't the best house, but it was MY house. It was my first house. I wish I still had that character... to go back and relive those memories... unfortunately, not all things are saved. But that's okay, because I got to make new memories. This game has so many possibilities that you could keep playing for hours without end. Of course, this game isn't for everyone. The storyline can get a bit repetitive, I'll be the first to admit. Spawn conditions make it even more difficult to go throughout the quests. And what with all the bugs... however, that's what I enjoy about it. After all that, after I beat the game, after I defeat the Ruin... I feel accomplished. I've beaten this game, maybe hundreds of times by now. I have all the achievements. I've made huge colonies. I've created hundreds of characters. And still, I come back for more. I love this game, so much. It was my teenage life, and this game will carry on with me throughout my life. It is what gave me my creativity, my imagination. I have none other to thank than Chucklefish, and the developers of this game. Whether the game mechanics, the music, the lore, anything. It is great. I don't think I'll ever get tired of this game. Thank you for reading, I do appreciate it. Have an amazing day, Protectors. Stay positive. Stay bound to the stars. Stay you.

You know when this game first came out..I remember my excitement. I didn't rush to finish it or looked up any guides. I just say down and enjoyed the game. Building my first home or just sitting at the spaceship listening in to the theme of the game with a cup of tea in hand...those were the good times. Now..now I am loving abroad..economic issues..stress, a mother who has stroke..girl I like cancer. This reminds me of the calmer times..while I can and will play this game again I only hope that I can reach to the level of stability and happiness I had back then. And I hope for any who reads this that o hope you are doing better and will keep doing better and better. Love you all.

To think it's been 7 years since I've first ever played Starbound... The joy I first felt as I found out about this new infinite open universe sandbox game, the potential is limitless! Gathered my best friends and had them all hop onboard, although at first we pirated the game because but then, we didn't have our credit cards, we didn't have money to spend on games and some simply weren't as interested in the game itself... but 2-3 friends stuck with it and we purchased a 4 pack on Steam together. We had lost our worlds 2 times, first time when we went from the pirated to the original on steam, that one wasn't so bad, we were still very curious and very much had no clue what awaits us... Then we were playing so much in the beta, built so many things... houses, towns, cities... all to be wiped away once more after the game went out of beta into a full release with a rework to the universe and changing how it works instead of having sectors, to everything being in a single star map. This time it hurt losing all our progress, but we kept pushing each other forward. Eventually we've created things even greater than we ever had in the beta, larger scale projects, more exploration to be had, more things to do. It eventually became home again, I would simply teleport around to all the things we've created and take it all in, with the most relaxing music that symbolizes either relaxation, cheerfulness, hopefulness and sadness too... Now when I listen to the OST of Starbound, it's nostalgic, so many memories are tied to these melodies that honestly, it always gets me emotional when I listen to them. I haven't touched the game in forever now, neither of us did, one of our friends grew a bit distant, while that other friend and I continued on to play other things, but life also got in the way and we weren't able to spend as much time as we use to. Eventually it was forgotten about, nobody mentioned it, nobody touched it... But I've never uninstalled it, I had too many memories holding onto it, my world, my save was the one we all played together on... I'll never let it go, it holds so much for me and my friends. And a few days ago, I was alone, didn't have my usual buddies to play something with and I was scrolling trough my steam library, and there it was, Starbound, still waiting, my unfinished projects sprung right back into my mind and decided that's what I'll do, I'll finish all the projects I've started but never finished. As soon as I opened up the game and the main theme started playing, I'll be damned if I didn't get emotional and teary. I got on my main character and there I was, in my main house on my home planet, the music hit even harder... and all the memories started flooding me... I spent at least an hour simply listening to the music, revisiting all our planets and projects... But how empty it feels, without my 2 friends I use to play with... it's actually heart wrenching, it's actually physically painful to bear. But I have made my decision, I will finish my projects that I started so long ago... when I finish them, I'll see if they still have the game, either invite them back for a nostalgia session... if not I'll stream it or make a video of it. To never forget half a decade we spent together in this rough gem with amazing music. Sorry about the essay length comment, but hey, as I've said it gets me emotional and, I've got nobody to vent this to... so this will do. Thank you for reading this if you have.

The universe is a big place. So many people who have made a home on these worlds, and each of them have their own problems. I sometimes wonder if saving these worlds are worth it, but then I think back to the charm that they all have. Sure, some of them resent me for my past mistakes, but a hero like me can never be perfect. I wonder if there is someone out there for me. Someone who experiences the same pain that I have. ...You really do fall in love with this little universe. It is bittersweet. My characters still feel like they're out there somewhere, living their lives- together with their friends. Memories of standing still when you're touched by the beauty of alien snow, or the joy of finishing construction on your little clunker of a ship, or watching your friend companionably sit on the chair across yours, when they really didn't need to... It is a special kind of joy, and a tender sadness. It was a second childhood that came to me after I thought childhood was over. Starbound is special. It asks for imagination, and gives you immeasurable things in return.

I like how 80% of Starbound art includes at least one Novakid, which means the community absolutely loves them, and rightly so, because the Novakid are awesome. And then you look at Novakid lore and find almost nothing from the creators. But honestly, that fits the species perfectly. There Novakid work better without any story or explanation behind what they are. That's the whole point of them as a race. They're here for a good time, however long that lasts, and they know it might not be long. They don't know where they came from, and they don't necessarily know where they're going, but they sure as hell know what they're doing. "It's okay to forget where you came from. It's even okay to forget where you're going. Just don't forget who you are."

The only lore reference I could ever find, was an _almost_ unused track's name (it plays in one area and stops a couple seconds in). A song which fits the style of the Novakid, even aptly titled with (Novakid Theme) appended at the end. It's called "I Was the Sun (Before It Was Cool)". This is the only lore we have. Novakid are the sun. Living pieces of it. That's about it. It could mean any number of other things, though... Because it's clear they are the sun in some way, as they look like they are made of plasma, but it isn't certain _how_. And it isn't really certain how they can do anything without burning everything they touch... They aren't from the sun's explosion, as they were the sun "before it was cool" which is an amazing pun but also a confusing statement. Hm. Novakid lore. Still incredibly open-ended though, unsurprisingly.

Four thousand and eighty one. That's how many hours I have in this game on Steam as of writing this. Starbound means more to me than it has any right to. I love to build, to build little worlds and characters... I've been pretty much isolated more than half my life which, isn't saying much as I'm only Twenty, but still. Growing up was rough and most of the time I was just all alone with nothing but a computer and very few friends. Years after Starbound hit 1.0 I had a enough friends for a small group, we did roleplays together and... I had feelings for one of my friends, but could never bring my self to say it. I found that confidence in our characters. To confess our feelings as characters, we knew we were talking about *our* feelings, not just our characters'. God that probably sounds so pathetic, but this game has had such an impact on me. But now... none of my friends touch the game. It's just me looking at the countless things I built. Wandering amidst memories and this soundtrack. Sitting alone thinking up stories of these characters' lives, what they'd be doing. I'll miss the wonderful moments I've had with this game.

Sometimes, I have games that I never really want to play, but when I start I end up playing for hours and enjoying every second. Then, I have games I want to play, but once I am, I just feel... empty. I find myself wondering why I ever wanted to play it at all. Im afraid that starboung has become one of those games to me. There was a time where I loved playing it, but... not anymore. I boot it up, I make a character, and then I just... can't bring myself to do anything. It makes me wonder what I even liked about it in the first place. Still, the memories I have of it are wonderful ones, and I will cherish them. Even if I can't make any more good memories with starbound.

As controversial as Starbound is these days, its atmosphere is still truly special. Few games make me feel like Starbound does. When I first got the game back in 2016 ish my old laptop couldn't even run it properly, so I would just listen to the soundtrack frequently and imagine what it would be like once I had a PC capable of running it at a playable frame rate. I have a wierd relationship with starbound. Its my favorite game that i do not touch anymore. I don’t like the story and i miss some of the old features. Yet starbound has a place in my heart that no other game really had. I remember when i was younger spending a vast amount of time building a huge colony filled with these awesome stories that i would write for them. I remember some of my memories with friends, especially the giant base we built and a tavern we made. I think the game’s music is incredible and boy it looks good (especially the sky) but I can’t say i enjoy the game alot anymore…asside from the ocasional build here and there.

@sirfijoe450
@sirfijoe450 Год назад
@@blartversenwaldiii The game had a lot less rules and was more like a true sandbox. you used to summon bosses instead of doing missions. There was no main story so you could advance at your own pace. even your starting planet was randomized instead of everyone now having the same starting planet. Everything felt more alive and varied because 99% of the enemies and weapons were randomized instead of seeing the same few monsters over and over. It was a lot more mysterious and there were more buildings to come across. The game also had more survival mechanics, like you constantly had to eat and if it was cold you had to stand by fire to keep warm. The positives of now are that the bosses are a little better and there are many quality of life changes. But something about the vibe of the beta (around 2013-2014) is unmatched. I have an intense unmoving nostalgia for that early era of starbound.

I think the thing about youth is less that you're unaware of the world around you, and more so that you're experiencing so many firsts. Everything feels new and exciting, and every corner of life feels like it's hiding something. I remember being fascinated by Starbound for years. Starbound and Subnautica. I only ever had shitty laptops for my childhood, so I generally resigned myself to never being able to play them. One day, though, in high school, I got my first computer capable of running games. Actual games. The first things I bought with my birthday money were Subnautica and Starbound. I downloaded Warframe, too. Because it was free and looked pretty. That one never stuck, but good God, Starbound and Subnautica did. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the immersion. Paddling through the seas, traipsing through the stars. I loved both games, but Starbound did something special to me. I guess it was part hyperfixation and part gratification. I remember waking up, building my ship, downloading mods, building towns, fighting bosses, then going to sleep with my screen on. The title screen music would see me off into slumber every night, for weeks. I felt so happy. Like many others have said, Starbound unfortunately doesn't hold up that well in the long run. But I think for me, it's just that I've played so many more games that have had so much more to offer. I guess it just comes with the hobby, or with growing up. I still adore video games, they're something I have loved for a long time and always will. But I think eventually everything loses its luster. Everything looks less new, as you get older, more experienced. But while you can never go back to what once was, you can always keep that little fire inside you. The one that was just lit yesterday, and thinks everything has infinite potential. And you can always visit it, until the day you die.

Long comment time: I used to play this game alot back in 2017 and just kinda dropped it for awhile... Until an old flame and I picked it back up recently. Forgotten how fun this game was in terms of sandboxing and gameplay. Sure it's story is short, but most people just get it over with it. After that? You can do whatever you want. Explore more planets, raid dungeons, create wonderful structures, etc. It's just a shame that such a wonderful game is no longer being updated and simply on life support from the thousands of mods it has. But, despite the game not getting updated anymore and being on mod support, it's still a fantastic game to play with friends. And it also hits me differently now considering that this game was also my old flame's last game since he has left the internet and on the road of recovery. I cried knowing that we finshed on a game I enjoyed alot and now everytime I'm reminded of this game... I think of him and wonder wherever he is now, he is doing alright. And hope one day... he will return. Until then, I just have to keep going. He probably would want me to keep going, so I will.

even though people say starbound isn't great, I'm not really bothered by it. There are some really unique things about it, the way you can create bases, the music, and others. When it turns to night on a planet and the music sets in, it gives me a warm emotional feeling, I don't know how to describe it but it makes me happy and calm. Maybe it's cause days usually feel very short for me and it relieves me from that dread? I don't know but all I can say is, starbound is unique in it's own way to me and I love it.

My ship was a star person ship, upgrade one time. filled the second room full of treasure, my pet running around happily. Things start getting real repetitive so download some mods so it won't be quite repetitive. Treasure planet for money, a ray gun for mining, and stronger weapons. Getting these mods just made it harder to enjoy the game, and let me just stop playing after I died at some point.

Makes me wanna cry every time I hear these songs. Years of playing this game were amazing, but later faded. Thanks for bringing back that nostalgia.

In the game there is a Hylotl codex titled "Never Invite a Novakid to tea." neat touch, at least that's what I assume this artwork is based off of.

In space, it is cold and dark but it is filled with life- life that is changing, life that is moving forwards. so even though we are very small compared to space we are always moving forward -Lulu of the galactic federation
