Tickets sold out in record time for Holocaust Survivor Eddie Jaku’s talk at the Sydney Jewish Museum on Sunday 30 August.
Growing up Eddie identified as ‘German first and Jewish at home.’ Yet, with the rise of Nazism, he was subjected to discrimination including his expulsion from school in 1933. On the night of Kristallnacht, Eddie was severely bashed by a group of Nazis and sent to Buchenwald.
In 1942 Eddie’s family was sent to a camp in Belgium and from there to Auschwitz where Eddie’s mother and father were both murdered. In 1945 the camp was liquidated. On the march from Sonneburg, Eddie hid in a drain and thereafter in a cave, before been rescued by the Americans.
Today he considers himself to be “the happiest man alive” and constantly promotes his messages of tolerance, understanding, love and friendship.
Eddie has received hundreds of letters from both students and adults, telling him what an unforgettable impact he has made on their lives. Some of these poignant letters were read out at the event.
It was a very moving and emotive afternoon and we are sure Eddie gained many new ‘followers’.

@@jpye8989 Good advice at minute 41:00 to young people especially to Palestinian teenagers. Never give up no matter what the odds. One day Palestine will be free. The Zionist European Jews will go back to Europe. Finally the Nakhba or the 100 year old nightmare would be over. This speech should be translated into Arabic and will become viral in the Arab world. There is still hope for a free Palestine

I finished his book two days ago, the most beautiful book i have ever read in my life, every human being on this earth should read his book! I wish i could have hug this man and thank him for inspiring and changing me for better. We have everything to be happy comparing what he went thru and still we complain..sometimes we hate, what a example of life, beautiful life, hope, determination and decision. God bless his family, his generation and all theirs families who survived the Holocaust

"I think continually of those who were truly great. Who, from the womb, remembered the soul’s history Through corridors of light, where the hours are suns, Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition Was that their lips, still touched with fire, Should tell of the Spirit, clothed from head to foot in song. And who hoarded from the Spring branches The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms. What is precious, is never to forget The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth. Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light Nor its grave evening demand for love. Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother With noise and fog, the flowering of the spirit. Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields, See how these names are fêted by the waving grass And by the streamers of white cloud And whispers of wind in the listening sky. The names of those who in their lives fought for life, Who wore at their hearts the fire’s centre. Born of the sun, they travelled a short while toward the sun And left the vivid air signed with their honour". - Stephen Spender ('The Truly Great') VALE EDDIE JAKU (1920-2021)

I love this man. I wish he could forgive and forget. He says “ i do not hate “ but Eddie my new friend, i wish you knew that unforgiveness is the after affect of hatred. I wish he could have forgiven the Natzi’s. this would have been delightful to the Lord God all powerful.

Solzhenitsyn: “The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either - but right through every human heart.” It may be easier than you think to cross that line.
