itllneverwork.boats/thefilm The whole story. This blockbuster sellout movie made entirely in Argyll by locals is developing cult status. It is a true story, a drama, a documentary, a visual spectacular, a thriller, an action movie, a comedy, a snapshot of real life, a feel good as well as tragedy and an environmental statement all set in the West Coast of Scotland's fishing industry. Something for everyone.

There may also be certain lobster buyers (i.e., restaurants, hotels, resorts, etc.) who want to offer seafood harvested without fossil fuels. This could be a niche market that helps offset costs and insulate fishermen from price fluctuations. The lower production might also be argued (marketed) to be more sustainable to the consumer.

Just what I've been looking for. I'm going to be converting a Western Australian 12mtr Aluminium Cray (Lobster) Boat to elec (+ sail), for blue water cruising, the deck being the main living/patio area under the panels, vs most boats having small outdoor areas. It's great you get up to 90% funding. I can get it for my house, not boat (honestly). Q; How's the input benefit from down facing panels from water reflection? Apparently due to installer weight considerations, these panels have 3mm glass each side, vs standard having 6mm on top, which could be a concern with hail storms, or even walking on them for cleaning bird shiet, etc. That Gemini looks a nice cat, not seen one before.

60 mile range at 5 knots. So can approximate 15 mile range to fishing grounds. Does that take into account leeway, pushing against tide and head on seas and set and drift?
@itllneverwork-EFV
@itllneverwork-EFV 4 месяца назад
60 is a ballpark figure, possibly more and at times less. When the weather is poor I can lose about 15 miles range on a bad day. Tides can be managed to a certain extent as can set and drift. I'm adapting to what the boat can do. I move fishing grounds regularly. Every boat can be fitted out differently to best suit their working day. I have space for more battery storage if I think I might need it. I haven`t so far. I'm not necessarily trying to present a boat that's better just one that can do the job without burning and diesel and I think this is close to my needs.

With Global Emission Reduction Agreements, everyone will have to 'adjust' eventually. 'Currently', many governments haven't met targets agreed to, so offer incentives to consumers, i.e. "up to 90%" in this vid, to fast pace it. Higher taxes will be applied to gasoline to fund it, electric (or other) vehicles will become more the norm. Eventually targets will be met, no more tax payer funded incentives, those who didn't take advantage will eventually have their non-compliant vehicle put out of action, have to pay full price to convert, or for most it will be cheaper to use public transport, which is better for most governments as it = less congestion & costs on roads.

From a maintenance point of view after nearly a year of working the boat I have not had to put a spanner, screwdriver or boiler suit on the boat. Yes, when that does come electrical trouble shooting is a challenge. Expensive, yes, though UK has 90% funding towards conversions of this nature. This boat has worked commercially for almost a year now and has not burnt any diesel. We are not going to reduce let alone slash our fuel emissions down without carrying some of that burden in inconvenience, re learning and cost on our own shoulders. I would suggest the glass half full approach to this.

Well colour me impressed! Your small trawler is a "flagship" (if you will pardon the pun) for electrical re-fitment. I am of the opinion that £137,000 is *TOO MUCH* for what you had installed. The 20kW + ESC is fine, the Victron equipment is excellent. Your batteries could have been *much cheaper* if you had raw 16x3.2V/340Ah LiFePO4 cells with 100A BMS installed. £680 = 16x320Ah/3.2V (16.384kWh) Solar panels should now be about £100 for 500W each. Golden Motors also has some excellent marine motors at very good prices (perhaps 2 x 10kW motors - 1 for backup)
@Lana_Warwick
@Lana_Warwick 3 месяца назад
Where did you get the 137K figure from? Was it just for the off-grid components, or the entire refit incl, removal of engine, tanks, lines, etc, etc? I agree re batteries, however it's likely an insurance requirement for his 'commercial operation', especially if he employs deckhands. I've got a 15kWh Gobel Power unit with built in extinguishers (~4Kau), insurance Co wont consider it unless Gobel fork out Big $ to get put on a list of approved suppliers🤷‍♀ If ever required, I'd use the tender outboard as redundancy.

I considered that for a blue water cruiser, especially for the draft. But Cats come with other issues, like bridge slap, higher the clearance = larger the boat, 2 x everything incl cost, not everywhere can lift them out, etc. IMO, if Cats were great, all the commercial blue water fishing guys would be using them. Take the weight of the engine, tanks, & everything else nolonger required out of a 12x4mtr aluminium commercial fisher, which offers great outdoor living vs others, lots of overhead for panel patio, add back in maybe 10% weight for motor & batteries, she's a different beast, incl noise, maint, smell, cost. In my case I'm also not pushing hard like commercial guys, & will be taking advantage of wind with a simple sail setup which I can drop when needed to get under bridges.

It would take a huge electric motor to turn that setup. But it should be possible. You will always lose power and speed through mechanical disadvantage/waste.
@Lana_Warwick

Shaft should be ok, however repowering from one diesel to another diesel would possibly require a prop change for best efficiency/performance. It's all in mathematics that are way over my head, why there's specialists that work in the industry everyday that can advise. "Speed" of elec vs diesel are very different things, like comparing a V8 Mustang to a Nissan LEAF. With Global agreements to reduce pollution, fuel taxes will increase, gasoline engines will faze out, people will eventually have to settle for, at least it's better than walking, allow more travel time.

That is/was true but the same stuff plus combustion has been getting into the air and water for a century because we keep going back to get more fossil fuels... Then we burn them.... there's not even a time where they start paying back the resources and energy used... it's a dead loss That pollutes at every stage ... The old methods are slow toxic and demand a lot of water but new methods and plant are cleaner plus the batteries use less Li and more of it is getting recycled. The other point is that Li was the first step.. there are new chemistries and batteries that use common less problematic materials ..even the threat of Na.. has helped sit on the Li price and is forcing it to clean up. But it's all the smaller portable personal devices that still need the Li ion tech. What we do have to recognise is that it's easier to control pollution if it's at one key point not dispersed. That you can only get the best out of renewables if you use a mixture and have batteries to store the variations. Even the grid cannot cope without them.

Stop commercial fishing of open waters, if you want to save the planet and want to lobster,farm them like all other sustainable products.

Farming is bad. They use antibiotics on the fish. It's about as nasty as chicken ranches. I live in a yurt on a small mountain farm and have four fish ponds plus I garden. I never had kids either. Kids are the worst on the environment! 😅 Im a small impact footprint but not many ca do this... way too much work!

This boat can go 5000 miles without recharging at 3.5kts. It can refuel in the middle of the Pacific. You can't do that with diesel.
@keithb6717
@keithb6717 4 дня назад
@@marviwilson1853 Actually you can and it’s been done for many decades. It’s called bunkering. 5000 miles without recharging is an obvious lie. Do the math. Anyway, I’ve done multiple 5000 mile trips with no diesel and no recharging. It’s literally been done for hundreds upon hundreds of years. It’s called sailing and it requires no child labor working in dangerous mines.
@marviwilson1853
@marviwilson1853 3 дня назад
@@keithb6717 You clearly have not watched the video. At speeds of around 3-4 kts, solar/battery boats like this can cruise indefinitely in reasonably sunny conditions. During the day the panels generate more power than needed for low speed propulsion. The batteries always remain charged for propulsive power through the night. Nothing wrong with sailing, not sure why you mention that! Australia is the biggest lithium producer in the world. They don't use child labor as far as I remember. It really is not helpful to introduce these anti EV myths.
@keithb6717
@keithb6717 3 дня назад
@@marviwilson1853 Obviously you’ve never traveled thousands of miles upon the ocean. I’m guessing you’ve no miles. I’ve had arrays. They never produced enough power to even run the radar and autopilot and refrigeration and everything else without running the diesel a couple of hours daily. (Under sail). Sunny isn’t the norm, honey. You can pretty much count on rain once or twice a day. Well, since Australia doesn’t have child labor we’ll excuse the practice globally and pretend that all batteries come from Australia. Electrical is your system/systems most likely to fail. No diesel and no sails sounds like a ship of nightmares.
