An aluminum stand for under a grand

What a fantastic idea! I'm currently using the "General Grievous" style monitor arms for my three monitors. While it works alright they need to be adjusted constantly as they will get out of place at the slightest bump and it forces the monitors to be closer to me than I would really like. While this specific implementation probably won't work for my use case, I really like the design and it should be a fantastic jumping off point in creating my own. Another great video as always!

I love using extruded aluminum and was just brainstorming how to build a monitor mount for my 49” LG curved monitor and you just gave me the ideas I need. Great work!

Just yesterday I was wondering if you were working on your next video and there it is today. What a coincidence...

Did my build today, my biggest tip is: To anyone using the plates from Steven's store get yourself a #8-32 tap. The plates are great and I recommend them, but they are powdercoated after they are tapped so I had to retap them with with screws and they are too soft for that so really had to fight with them. Ultimately though: I am so damn happy with this monitor stand. My main gripe with my previous one was the way my Sony a6400 was mounted as a webcam. Any movement on the desk would cause the camera to wiggle and ring for quite some time. I tapped the holes in the end of my 2" (black) alu extrusion with some M6 holes and got a little adapter plate from McMaster that added a 1/4"-20 hole to the top so that I could mount my ballhead and there is no wiggle at all now. Thats a beatiful solution for a single monitor stand... The question is how could it be expanded to support 2, 3, or even 4 monitors 🤔

Based on this video, I made a PC holder under my desk. After I finished the PC holder, I then saw the rails and thought, hmmmm this can also accommodate some homemade laptop holders as well. I found some L profile brackets sitting around, bent them a bit and used the same screws and nuts and mounted them. I routed the cables and all is done. All because of Steven and this glorious project that sparked the idea. I can't express how grateful I am I stumbled upon this video.

Nice project. Personally I'm not keen on the exposed t-slots in the final product - which make the construction material recognisable. I think some additional "vanity panels" (simple rectangles with appropriate holes) would really tidy up the look of the thing. You'd probably have to live with the thing for a while - to work out where any custom holders need to be positioned - and then order up and fit the panels around them - or have some made up in "standard" sizes that can be jigsaw puzzled around the holders. Just an idea 🙂 Thanks for the videos.

Ive been eyeing that monitor stand in your previous videos! Glad you made a video on the design process of it. I designed my own concept in the same fashion of the offset version. Black anodized is my preference 🖤

That this video exists is greatly validating, both on the front of there being someone else obsessed with the anodized silver aluminum aesthetic, as well as solving the vesa mount studio display problem. I solved mine using extra walnut butcher block and anodized aluminum wall mounts having not thought of extrusions, but am inspired to think about a 2nd version now.

i build my own monitor stand for two stacked monitors 3 months ago. Nice to see im not the only one😊 I printed a StreamDeck holder and speakers behind the monitor

Doing my last rewatch before I go assemble mine! Doing black to match the rest of my desk infrastructure and adding a 1/4"-20 to the top with an adapter plate to mount my mirrorless that I use as a webcam.

Damn that's hot! Almost sad that I went for the height adjustable stand with the Studio Display 😅

This is very nice! I have been wanting to do this same thing for a while. I actually saw a similar design in my local Kroger pharmacy a few months back. They had their monitors mounted on vertical black anodized 80x80 aluminum extrusion. The monitors were attached with some kind of monitor mount that is made for extrusions like this. I have looked all over the internet for the mount they use but haven’t been able to find it. Using send cut send to make a custom adapter is a great idea!

Nice work, just one thought, the variable height stand for the laptop looks a bit primitive, do you just add or subtract books!!!😬🤭🤭

I'm using a 3d printed (abs) vesa adapter thats holding my 43" monitor for over a year without issue.

I think this is an excellent functional and aesthetic project, especially for larger single displays due to the structural integrity of it all. I think for smaller multi-displays the cost of the extra VESA mounting hardware would add up quickly, as well as incurring further mechanical complexities to align the displays... $60 alone can get you a full clamping dual-arm system with VESA swivels built in.. but they are only rated to 14.3lbs each/27in max size, as well as obviously not meeting the anodized/clean criteria, just comparing price-points. It's great that you utilized the extrusion slots, very practical. Especially the hidden headphones behind the monitor, in the past I've done this with a large command-strip hook on the monitor itself. But this is far more thought-out. You've actually created a core system with limitless height options, and no permanent changes needed.

Thanks for sharing your learning with this project. What's the size of the last aluminum extrusion profile bar that you used? Is it really 8 inch wide?

Whats funny is that the Apple stand actually is probably made from a custom extrusion and not a monolithic block. Otherwise great monitor stand. If only my monitor had a vesa mount :(

I don't know what antiperspirant you use, but it may have aluminum in it. If it does contain aluminum, I would change to one without. Thats my P.S.A. done for the week.

You have nice ideas. The stand looks like a machine part in a workshop, I would better go with round aluminum parts instead of industrial parts in livings areas. I built a lot of that stuff for my workshop and the t-slots collect a lot of dust. So after half a year they’re really dirty. I think that your whole desktop isn’t really ergonomic. The distance between your monitor and the desk is even for your size too long. A rule of thumb is that your head should tilt about 5-10 degrees downwards while working (the top edge of the monitor should be the middle of your pov when you have your head not tilted).

Fully adjustable in all dimensions and electrical height adjustable would be perfect. And of course, multiple monitors.

Id love it wall mounted and im imagining a horizontal wall mounted on with horizontal movement capability, but you could just mount a horizontal on to the vertical desk mounted one too🤔

I posit that 3D Printed Parts would actually work if you were using CF Nylon or CF Polycarbonate. I mean, at least worth a test for entertainment purposes.

Dude! I was also thinking about building a custom, table-clamped monitor stand, especially because most of the available ones are ugly. Have you seen the Samsung Space Monitor? Could we DIY that stand? I think it's both functional and visually pleasing.

I started writing a comment about how the 3d printed plates would probably work, but then saw the send cut send parts were like $5-$15 apiece, and now I don't even know why I bother 3d printing things. =

How much weight do you think this could hold? Thinking about building something like this for my 42" monitor, but I'm a bit concerned about the weight (around 9 kg/20 lbs).

I'm a big fan of wall mounting monitors, I'm looking at three right now; I suspect you're less interested in that in part because you still have to do something with the cables. But also I live in apartments, where the rooms are laid out by some kind of lightly cyberized fish who has been exposed to every episode of every sitcom pre 1980 thousands of times. These rooms have no appropriate place for anything and I require of myself that the wall arms are bolted into studs. I've been wanting for a long time to build a system where I get a couple of beefy 2"x4" extruded aluminum beams and mount them running from near floor to near ceiling on the studs, with more extrusion beams running horizontally between them to hang shelves, mount my monitors, lamps, speaker stands, in whatever specific location along the slots that I desire.. It would even be possible to mount the desk so it has no legs, no literal footprint, and I could reconfigure it to new fishdungeons when I move!

The 3D printed brackets holding my sim rig for racing games together heavily disagree that 3D printed parts are too weak for holding a monitor ;-) Nice video and great idea!

i did the same thing with 100$ by simply buying an ender 3, printing the parts, then using said ender 3s parts for the stand

Great stand, but I didn't catch what is being used to make contact between the aluminium profile and the table. For those of us that have an expensive table, they may not want to mark the table. Personally I have a cheap table and I would look for a bigger contract surface to spread the load.

It cost a grand? What currency? I built a triple monitor version with adjustable side arms for less than £300gbp a few years ago. I used RK4080 in a ¯TT¯ configuration
