An Amazing Mine: Part 1 - Underground Mill

We’re definitely stepping out of the ordinary with this mine explore… How many have you have seen - or even heard of - a full underground mill before? Even though I saw it with my own eyes, it is still difficult to imagine that mill operating there. The underground mill is a big focus of this first video, but the next video should not disappoint either. Topping this mine will be a tall order (but, don’t worry, I’m always looking to top prior abandoned mines).
I would love to know who had the idea for the underground mill because that is a hell of a bold engineering project, no? Mills are a complex setup even on the surface in ideal conditions. Imagine constructing a mill underground in the complete darkness, having to literally blast out every inch of space you need from the surrounding rock, freezing water pouring down on you all of the time… And imagine hauling all of that equipment into place in those conditions! These miners didn’t use a crane like mills on the surface do in order to get everything where it needs to be. Things like jaw crushers, for example, are not light either.
At the request of the owner, I am playing it discreet with the location. However, I will say that it is outside of our normal areas of exploring and that it is high up in some serious mountains. Really high up… One needs a 4WD to reach the mine and the road would definitely make some people uncomfortable. What I’m getting at is that it would have been no easy task getting the miners and their equipment - especially the milling equipment - into this mine.
This was primarily a silver mine, with lead as a secondary. I’m not used to seeing galena outside of the desert mines of California and Nevada, but there is a lot of it in this mine!
Outside of the mine there are the remains of a tram station to lower workings and a bunkhouse that is slowly succumbing to the elements. It would have been tough spending winters at this mine, but the miners would have had plenty of company from other miners working the mines in the area.
As I mentioned in the video, the mill was shut down in the 1940s and large parts of the mine have been abandoned for even longer, but the owner and others were mining sections of the mine as recently as a decade ago. And, no, they were not “rogue miners”, but were mining legally with MSHA inspectors coming around regularly to check on them.
Mines of the West was with me on this trip and those of you that know him, know that he kills it with the abandoned mine photography. So, I look forward to seeing his work on the underground mill. And thank you to Gabe for making the necessary introductions for us to visit this extraordinary mine!

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

“Gly”: That mine certainly is one of a kind. Never in all my years of exploring have I seen a mill inside of a mine either. Talk about a treasure trove of artifacts, I could spend hours in a place like that going through every little nook and cranny. Great job, that was really interesting to see. 👍👍

This processing plant is in good condition considering how long it has been abandoned. I know of several mines in Montana that have the crusher still inside. One is located near Troy Montana and the company totally removed all indication of a mining operation on the surface but all the crushers and equipment is still in the mine its self. The access portals are completely blocked. This particular mine was in operation from the mid seventies til the mid eighties when the price of silver was sky high.

@davidmicheletti6292

TVR Exploring They even minted a silver coin and named it for this mine. It was called the Troy, Troy ounce. The town of Troy Montana was near by thus the name. I remember trucks coming down from the mountain loaded with ore. They would dump their loads at the small rail yard in Troy. The ore was just piled up next to the tracks. Ironically these ore piles sat right out in the open, that is until some enterprising person loaded much of the ore into another truck and carried it all away. After that a large fence enclosed area was built to safe guard the stock piles of ore. On the other side of the mountain another massive silver deposit was found and was in the process of being developed when the price of silver dropped like a rock. This ore body had veins of silver three inches thick right on the surface. They never mine it as far as I know. But that was almost thirty years ago and I have not followed up on what happened. I did bring my family panning for gold in that area and we did have very good luck.

Really interesting to see an underground mill in what I assume is the US. I found it interesting since I've seen it some times before in Norway, also high up in extreme conditions in snowy mountains. The reason for the mills being underground was the conditions outside, especially during the winter. The places I've got in mind has snow all year around as well, making structures undergorund much easier to maintain and handle all year around. I guess the reason is the same over there..? Anyways, really cool video as always! Looking forward ot the next part

The first flooded pocket you passed looked like a winze and a deep one also. Looked like another one right beside it. I think you go at just the right speed. You're thorough at showing everything and try to describe what everything that you know. That makes it all interesting. My question is, why does all the equipment, wood, parts and everything looks like a bomb went off inside the mine? I realize and understand when they were moving things out for good they weren't concerned with housekeeping. Just wondering if there was any other reason. Great job. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 4 года назад
Yes, you're right about that first pocket. I was having to hustle through that section to keep up or I would have inspected it more closely... I'm glad you think I go at the right speed. I try to play it like Goldilocks and get it just right, balanced between fast and slow. The "bomb effect" you see is, I believe, just a function of the mill being disassembled without a lot of concern for aesthetics and of eighty years of decay following things shutting down.

That bowl looking thing is one half of a ball mill. Looks like it went crusher, ball mill, jigs, shaking tables, and some tanks at the end which may have been thickeners, so the last step was probably dewatering filters. Probably quite a bit of traffic underground here, both carting away waste and taking concentrate out. Very cool.

@@TVRExploring Deafening I suspect is an understatement. Assuming this runs like most operations, never ending body vibrating head pounding noise. Even if you where deaf the noise would be there for you to feel. Heck, if just the mill & shaker table where running no load, with no materials, it probably make us grimmace. Can't imagine having to work in that. Tough old timers for sure.

Really, really cool. How did you know it was a winze? No surface structures? Owner say so? Were you able to get up to where they had the hoist set up? I love old hoists. I would hope there was some other access to the hoist room other than the winze its self.
@TVRExploring

It did not run all of the way to the surface, so not a shaft. No, the only access to the hoist room up above was via the rotted ladders along the winze. I'd love to have seen that one...

That is a Wow... it is the thought of this massive antique infrastructure hidden under hundreds of feet of solid rock that got me hooked with my own case of addit addiction. All of the equipment in the mill quite probably dates back to before the invention of polyvinyl chloride - PVC piping and the widespread use of aluminum. That was the era of riveted steel. Looking at the heavy equipment in that subterranean mill is like looking at a wall made by bresting waste rock- I feel the old miners pain...in my lower back.

12:10 that's a ball mill, or at least the drum of one. now THAT must have been loud. it's a tumble dryer full of rock and cannonballs inside a mine... so that's what was mounted there. ball mills give great context to the layout. they are usually a second stage of the mill. they like getting fed a consistent size at a consistent rate. from there the ore is basically sand iirc, so from there it's separation and extraction. the holes around the outside get cross bolts going through it usually
@seldoon_nemar
@seldoon_nemar 4 года назад
it's been 10 hours and I'm STILL amazed they did this. I mean, there's being deaf because there are no earplugs back then, but then there are these poor guys. that must have been as loud as working inside a running jet engine
@harrickvharrick3957
@harrickvharrick3957 4 года назад
I am thinking the mine must have been considerably less wet in the days it was operated (judging by how the electricity works were mounted up the wall).. BTW, what is it we see at 11:22? It looks like a stairway, except for immediately after we see another set of stairs mounted next to it further up! Maybe it still could be an actual stairway tho, as it looks like we see another one like that (and a step-up in level executed in similar fashion) at 16:04 - 16:10 ?! Would be rather unique in a mine! Also, I was wondering if this was videoed standing on the same false floors that jaw crusher at 19:40 (that must weigh quite something, especially with ore in it) was mounted on, carried by beams? I must say that's quite a feat, moving through a mine like this! Thanks!

I'm fairly sure those are Callow cells. So pneumatic flotation. The pulp comes from that manifold pipe above.the connections on the bottom are air lines. The air passes through the pulp and carries off the target minerals. Callow ran General Engineering out of Salt Lake and designed many processing plants such as parts of the B&M smelter in the US and Mt Isa in Australia. I can bore you with details if desired as Flotation concentration is a good few paragraphs. There's probably a hoist up that shaft

I gotta believe that they found it advantageous and/or profitable to operate a mill "in" the mine cause the effort to set it up and operate it must have been difficult at best. Was the mine flooded? It looks awfully wet.
@TVRExploring

In the corner opposite the jaw crusher there was a mount . Im guessing that would be for the electric motor for the crusher. Those crushers and the steel table winches etc would have been bought in with the trammer Then winched into position. That in its self would be a job and a half. Its probably why its still there. And then you have the mine itself, the woodwork, plumbing and electric etc. You can see where the time and money went.

Yes would be chore get in placem But would a lot like the old Johny Cash song where he brought a Cadilac home in his lunch pail. Most of that style of heavy stationary equipment is made to be broken down into manageable sections. Then on site you have to sling into place and assemble with percision. Yes would have been quite the operation.
