The first part of this three part series looking at Bowie's creative decline in the 1980s as he became a superstar and lost his musical identity. This first part focuses on Bowie's 1983 album Let's Dance. Let's Dance saw Bowie embrace mainstream pop music with some help from Nile Rogers of the disco-funk band Chic and blues rock guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Compared to Tonight and Never Let Me Down, Let’s Dance is a masterpiece.

I actually think Let's Dance is a very enjoyable record, though not one of my favourites. It's still a plus to have Stevie Ray Vaughan's popularity to success after Bowie seen him live. For me my personal favourite eras from Bowie's work are the Thin White Duke era and the Berlin Trilogy. Scary Monsters and Super Creeps is a fantastic album and being a favourite for me. I love these kinds of videos too mate, the very good editing and commentary suits that style.

Excellent analysis (again!). When Let's Dance was released Bowie still had the 'cult artist'clout accompanying his every move. Which gave him major credibility with a bigger audience. Critics gave the album props (benefit of the doubt?) exactly because they thought it was just another trick in Bowie's hat, assuming he was now playing the commercial dandy. Only later on the album was dismissed. Without all the contextual baggage its a very fine Funky pop album with some edge to it.

I’m not happy about this review. I’m not sure you know what the word “trite” means. I mean you can argue that most songs are trite regardless of genre or content. It’s about how “meaningful” a song is. China Girl has some meaning but it depends what you read into it. In my experience, people interpret songs in ways I would never imagine. I didn’t really like “Let’s Dance” when I heard it but over time I have grown to appreciate it and the rest of the album. I think Bowie had something special that set him apart from the normal “pop star” which shone through in his music.
