An Analysis of OMORI, A True Masterpiece.

I'm certain that Basil's something is Mari's hair, getting tangled in his hands while he was carrying her with Sunny.

the reason kel is still kel is that the way kel copes is to KEEP being kel, to stay ignorant.

What's funny is that this video is an underrated masterpiece itself. I think you're soul-linked with the game in some way idk.

When I played the game, I honestly saw Omori as your greatest ally yet also your greatest enemy. He is your protector: a self-created version of your younger self to protect Sunny from his guilt, trauma, and from reliving the horrific past. He protects you by putting you back into White Space whenever Headspace begins to remind you of Mari or when you need to wake up and not fall back into your self-hate and mental torture. But he's also your great enemy: he doesn't want you to leave the perfect world you've created for yourself, he traps one of your friends away despite you need to save him, he's the obstacle standing in your way from accepting the Truth and all of the pain that will come from it. And at the end, whether you suicide or accept your truth, Sunny hugs Omori because he will live with this guilt and because Sunny has accepted himself (he will either give into Omori's "protection" or overcome it). And no matter what, I think that's bittersweet. Sunny is Omori but Omori is not Sunny. Just as you said, he's the mental image of everything Sunny doesn't want to be and the parts of himself he has to live with despite everything. I truly like to think Omori was created to be a well-intended version of Sunny, or at least something of such, that became plagued over time with Sunny's own instability, which is why the division of his 2 identities is hard to distinguish and put into any reasonable context for someone who hasn't experienced the same thing -- let's be honest, unless I was living as Sunny, it's difficult to fully interpret and say everything I think about these characters. His character can be interpreted in many ways, and this was my initial thought of him.

the omori wiki has a section explaining abbi which goes as follows: "ABBI's one of the three "great creatures", serving a role as the wisest. She existed as OMORI's imaginary friend, having such an influence that she could stop him from stabbing himself. Later on, she was banished into THE ABYSS and stripped of her wisdom for committing an act of some kind against him, most likely telling SUNNY to forgive himself for MARI's death."

One thing that I would have explained further is how everyone chose to cope with Mari's death. At the begining of the game when Hero hands you the emotions chart, it actually not only tells you how everyone dealt with the loss (Aubrey being angry at everyone, Kel finding happiness with new friends, and Hero being sad/depressed for a year). Not only does this tie into the story, it also ties in directly into the gameplay mechanics, as each of these corresponding emotions synergise the best with the dreamworld cast moveset.

i just realized that hero is wearing pajamas in headspace because he stayed in bed for a year after mari's death

Things that make me cry: OMORI'S STORY SIMPING FOR AUBREY EVEN THOUGH SHE AINT AND WILL NEVER BE REAL Hearing the word "underrated" combined with omori

I was hoping you were gonna point out that the Something in the dark that attacks you on the stairs attacks you by shoving you.

Oh and another thing that maybe wasn’t worth mentioning in your video but is still really interesting! When Aubrey talks about colouring her hair pink, she also mentions Mari wanting to have purple hair. And what hair colour does Sunnys friends have in headspace? Purple.

I'm pretty sure Abby tried to prevent Omori from stabbing himself and likely nudged him towards the truth.

I'll always maintain that Sunny was justified in defending himself with that weapon. He brought the knife with him because he had forgotten how to act and that it was inappropriate, he forgot how deadly it is or because he was just that scared of the outside. Aubrey meanwhile knows exactly how deadly a bat with nails is, every bit as deadly as a knife. Aubrey knows this because it isn't just covered with nails, but blood can be seen on it. It isn't for show, she's been using it. Looks like the church hasn't been her only coping mechanism. So she's been beating up and bullying the vulnerable, like the extremely anxious and emotionally delicate Basil for 4 years too. Yet somehow when Sunny sees what she has become, sees what emotional damage Basil has been going through and sees a viscous thug who barely resembles the Aubrey he knows with a nail studded bat with blood on it... Apparently he isn't allowed to protect himself or Basil. We'll just forget what Aubrey has become and feel real bad when she throws herself on the floor when she gets cut. I wonder if she had much sympathy for her victims when they hit the floor? It would seem that knives are more effective against her than tears and begging. It is evident that she isn't used to people who fight back like Basil. Zero sympathy for violent thugs who attack mentally ill kids.

Yo whoever voiced Basil in this video, tell him he's got a sweet voice

in Omori’s journal, I’m wondering if the “everything was okay” is read as “everything WAS okay”, but no longer is, hinting that something has happened to make this change. and the repetition of “everything was okay” “everything was okay” shows that whatever happened is something he deeply regrets and that he deeply wishes that everything would be okay again as he misses the time when it was. and the ??? for the days maybe symbolizes that Sunny can no longer remember the last time everything was okay, nor that last time he visited his friends. which hints at the fact that he hasn’t left his home nor seen his friends in several years. and he likely doesn’t try to remember the last time everything was okay as to avoid remembering what happened to Mari.

Honestly I love the emotion chart Hero shows you in the tutorial. Each emotion is tied to how its beholder dealt with Mari's death, even Basil. Notice what emotion isn't on the chart, and then notice what friend isn't on the chart either. Yeah, it goes deeper than it seems

Entering comments as I watch the video. - I think it’s interesting to mention how Sunny returns to white space when things go wrong in headspace. NitroRad mentioned it to be a self defense mechanism and I like that explanation a lot. - I appreciate you mentioning how much foreshadowing this game has. One of the neatest Easter Eggs I found on day 1 was the TV in the neighbor’s room referencing a movie called “Stand By Me,” the plot of this movie being... four friends traveling while looking for a dead body. I didn’t realize until I saw a friend play through the game the second time through. My second personal play through everything hit me like a truck as I realized just how much was shown to my face. - I’m not sure if I’m a fan of “suicide routes follow if you don’t face your fears” because while it’s mostly true it does feel like a harsh way to put it. Maybe just the term “suicide routes” sets me off, or maybe it’s because the cycle that’s being repeated didn’t end in this until JUST now, but I get what’s beint conveyed here. - There’s so much in black space I feel like there is to be talked about. I personally have been trying to analyze it, but that entire sequence and both the alternating hikki and true route versions are so jam packed with thoughts and ideas and fears and it’s something that could probably be done in its own video. Overall this video was fantastic! It could use a little polishing but you and those who helped worked incredibly hard and should be proud of your craft.

I want to say, before this video MIGHT hit 2,000 views; Thank you so much to everyone for all the support, all the nice comments and comments helping me learn more things about the game I glossed over (as well as things I missed in my analysis or got wrong), they mean the world to me. Right now I am taking a nice little break from making another video on this, or anything really, as I really overworked myself to the bone with this video. 2 months of gathering footage, writing and revising a script, editing and gathering my friends to do some voice acting, simultaneously working on other videos... it was a lot for me. But I kept working on this video because I wanted to share with other people my love for this game and what it meant to me, and what message I got from it. this game is great, it's a true masterpiece. in a lot of video games depression isn't well portrayed, it feels 'fake'..and there is no talking about the anxiety that got with it, trauma, PTSD, dissociative amnesia, guilt ect. this ending, the music, the art, everything is just so realistic and sad but sooo beautiful, i'm just in love with the scene where Sunny get up and look at Omori with the determination to overcome his trauma !! i'm so happy we got to see Sunny and Basil looking at each other smiling, finally free from Somethig. this game got me crying, you got me crying.

I love Mari... she's so sweet and kind, even after everything that's happened. "MARI is just so effortlessly graceful! don't you think so too, OMORI?"

Abbey is actually from the beta omori and was omori's original reason for trauma, she went by a different name I believe. Apparently sunny got a tad to obsessed with her and the guilt haunted his mind.

I love the cat girl Mari cameo, even if it was accidental.

Not sure if that voice filter is a mistake or not but it adds an unnerving element that fits pretty well

Before starting the video, I'd like to say that's more underplayed that underrated: few people play it and dislike it.

i like to think that the "yellow cat" represents kel. sunny and kel are next door neighbors. sunny's paranoia convinces himself that kel or kel's family are always watching. that they know that truth, just not saying it.

I feel like Mari was still alive when Sunny and Basil hanged her

I like the distorted and twisting voice that you use. It feels weird in my ears but kinda cool.

The characters are like the 5 stages of grief kinda. Sunny - denial. Uses white space to cope Aubry - anger. She became a sorta thug Basil - bargaining. He doesn't want sunny to leave him Hero - depression. After mari's death he became depressed Kel - acceptance. Even though he was sad, he got over it, he knows that life has to go own, he is the one who made the friends come back together. Knocking on sunny's house, talking to Aubry with sunny, trying to push hero out of depression, you get the idea.

I finished it last night and I'm still crying because of the end.. the closure everyone got... but mostly reading the hurtful things Sunny was technically saying to himself- it rings true with depression and struck a huge nerve... it made me happy to see him forgive and accept himself despite his mistake... this is a masterpiece and is important

okay i wanna share what i interpret of kel's character . to be honest , from the start i noticed he sort of has his shit put together the most out of everyone else which isn't exactly high praise given that's sort of his default when hero was depressed and deflecting , aubrey turned to violence , basil went neurotic , and sunny was sunny . even so , there's a lot to him that's starkly different from his dreamworld counterpart much like aubrey but in much more subtle detail. ( there's also the fact he doesn't really talk very much about how mari's death personally affected him . i feel the reason he seems more well - off about the incident is because he hasn't allowed himself time to process that it actually happened because he's too busy trying to help everyone else process it themselves . ) for starters , he is the only one to reach out to sunny . that kicks off the real plot itself, but even so the fact he did this despite his clear hesitance showed how mature he'd grown, which i feel is a bit unappreciated at times especially when his dreamworld counterpart is crass and silly and loud . he's no longer like that . he can be silly at times or oblivious , but he's more down to earth and empathetic and patient. something else i noticed really fast was when kel asks sunny to help him pick a gift for hero to give him after he returned from college . i noticed how he was _very_ considerate and put a lot of thought into what he felt would be a good gift that hero would enjoy . there's also something else worth mentioning and how iirc he isn't ever really shown crying except for the bad ending where basil had committed suicide in which he says something along the lines of , " why does this keep happening to us ? " and is literally the only one out of their friend group crying whereas aubrey shows no emotion and hero only coaxes sunny to leave . i also want to mention how kel shares information about how hero had handled mari's death ( that being didn't handle it much at all ) . despite kel attempting to comfort him and getting yelled harshly at , his parents comforted _hero_ instead and sort of forgot he was there until hero himself had to comfort kel . i don't believe that their parents are neglectful but it does seem that they hold hero to much bigger expectations compared to kel . as does aubrey , who called him slow - witted and naïve but even so nothing deters him from wanting to get her to stop bullying basil and for them to remain as friends . he even corrects basil when he refers to their friend group as past tense which is important because that's what sunny ends up remembering first as the words he needed to fight against omori .

There's a chilling moment in Orange Oasis where after navigating through a simple maze you encounter a poster with a smiley face saying YOU DID IT! and below that is a jumping rope insinuating that even in Headspace you cannot escape your guilt.

I think Basil is also apologizing for suggesting the violin as a present.

One thing that has stuck with me about omori is how prevalent the idea of escapism is, and how it shows that when taken to extreme, it has disastrous consequences. In the moment maybe the problem goes away, but it only grows exponentially while you’re blind to it, and whatever your escaping becomes a massive monster of problem to deal with. Another thing is how much escapism can eat away at your life. In Sunny’s case, he lost a whole 4 years of his life, which is pretty sad to think about. All that to say, that when I’m faced with a scary problem, or a fear I don’t want to confront, that instead of turning around and finding a video game to escape into, or scrolling RU-vid to ease my fears, I think of Sunny, and how hard it must’ve been for him to break free from his fantasy world, and how easy it would in comparison for me to put my phone down and face my fear, otherwise it may snowball into something much worse.

Just to point it out, Kel, although he didn’t change much, did in fact change. In the headspace, he usually is tagging along and just being a bit mischievous. Although his mischievous behavior is in the real world too, it’s toned down quite a bit. Kel also is the one usually pushing the group to help others, while dream Kel seems like he couldn’t care less.

The way the not pixel art art got its style is that the illustrator first drew the art digitally, then printed it out, then traced it, then scanned it, then repeated that several times.

@27:00 "How Basil feels" ... correction: How Sunny _assumes_ Basil feels (remember: This all happens in Sunny's mind). Sunny is so wracked with self-guilt, that he assumes Basil would be mad at him, or upset with him, or frustrated with him, and that's why he kept hiding from Basil, refusing to speak to Basil, etc in the real world. It's probably why he refused to go outside of his home, or speak to any of his friends for that matter. His self-guilt makes him assume that his friends would be angry at him if they knew, but if you go down the Sunny Route, he eventually finds the strength to Overcome the pain of Mari's death, to learn the Truth, and then find the strength to finally come clean.

Small thing that I don’t. Have solid proof of. Don’t take it as truth cus I’m pretty stupid The big yellow cat is also a calendar found in the treehouse, and possibly the keychains you can buy at the game/comic store. I’m not sure what book in the hikkiomori route you were talking about, unless you mean a glitched/grey version of the treehouse in a black space room. The big yellow cat being “the favorite” makes sense to me, and it’s pretty obvious that Sunny/Omori prefers the cat. Black space shows the cat alive and as an npc of sorts. Abbi is the least liked, since she’s locked away in deeper well for a crime, and Humphrey is just scary or “evil” or uncomfortable. (also, there is a dead whale in blackspace. I think that Humphrey is either an old toy, or possibly something Sunny saw on tv? Idk.) and the cat is something you saw often as a kid because of the treehouse you spent so much time in. Idk where I was going w/ this lmao.

18:32 I think it's fairly common knowledge that omori has inspiration drawn from yume Nikki and something that i noticed is that in yume Nikki, when the girl enters her dreamworld an eye appears on her television that im like 99% sure is identical to abbis (my memory kinda sucks and I can't find any videos that show the TV being turned on so I might be wrong) but it just made me think of that lol
