I had a lingering (mild) cough for over year after a very bad virus. One night woke to “wet” cough that turned out to be frank hemoptysis. X-ray was “clear” (slight overinflation) and after a second episode 2 weeks later I had a CT and was diagnosed with bronciectasis. After taking antibiotics I am almost symptom free - some days I have a little phlegm but not much.
I had significant hemoptysis in 2018 due to a broncholith, which my pulmonologist said was a calcified lymph node possibly formed as an immune reaction to histoplasmosis. I coughed up blood on five occasions, about 3/4 - 1 shot glass full each time of pure bright red blood, and then later, darker red clots. It was terrifying, but I was advised to hold off on a second ER visit unless I hit 2 short glasses in 24 hours. He did a bronchoscopy to verify it was a broncholith. It eventually quit bleeding. Fast forward to last Sunday night, 4 years later - the horror of it happened again. I coughed up about a shot glass of bright red blood. I did not go to ER. Thank goodness it has not happened again and it has been a week. I have a CT scan on Tuesday after Christmas. I will go to ER if it happens again. My husband tested positive for COVID the same day it happened, and I had been sick (but not positive, according to test) the week prior. Anxious to find out what is going on, but much less freaked out than I was in 20`8. Feeling optimistic that it has only been one spell.
Today i had a patient with 12 day hemotysis that in laryngoscopy had leech sticking to the inlet of the larynx with hematoma in the TVC,s. I wish i could share the picture of his larynx with you to add to the algorithem of the hemoptysis
Thank you for the comment and suggestion! HIV is on my long list of topics to cover, but unfortunately, I can't offer an approximate time frame for it.
I occasionally get hemoptysis.... That's since 2008...prior to that I had noticed an enlarged lymph node in 2006 which is still there...i never visited a doctor out of fear... In the beginning I thought I had TB but after some years I realised it is not TB since it never involves coughing...it is just blood which sometimes just comes into my mouth usually after intense gym moves (jumping jacks etc) and most rarely even in my sleep I see the blood on my pillow... It occurs 1-2 times a year on average... What could it be?
I spit blood with saliva out of a sudden without coughing at all for a few months now after having an iron like /blood taste in my mouth. Does anyone know what kind of doctor should i seek or what it could be ? My gums are healthy and i have seen a doctor for my lungs in the past many times, I'm not a smoker either.
I can't offer specific, individualized medical advice here, but for any patient with a symptom for which the diagnosis is uncertain, the best place to start is their primary care doctor.
I don't use any one specific book for reference. For the "approach to symptom" videos, I predominantly use a combination of review papers in the primary literature, relevant UpToDate articles, and personal experience. If you are looking for a single book that covers this type of material, Symptom to Diagnosis is probably the best.
So Cystic Fibrosis is a lung condition as well as digestive system and in some cases hemoptysis occurs. What advice do you need I can answer some questions?
@@alexajones2331 i feel not good after sleeping with my girlfriend. And after lifting heavy things, exercise or after running. Have you experience some of this?
Cough up blood daily have a mass about the size of a dime maybe a bit smaller in my lower left lung lost a bit more than 60 pounds in less than 8 months wake up at night coughing well the coughing is what wakes me up like flem that won't come out or get dislodged to the point I cough and gag so hard I puke and it makes sweat really bad. My right hand goes numb alot too for no reason. I refused any and all treatments and was wondering what's my chance the doctors said I had a 50% chance to live beyond 6 years without treatment. I feel like the Dr's are just trying to scare me into spending thousands for chemo or surgery n shit tho :/
