An Architect’s Own Home That Feels Like a Tree House (House Tour)

As an architect’s own home, SRG House by Studio Johnston balances its heritage context with contemporary design aesthetics. Facing the nearby water, the family home retains natural qualities through a strong connection to the surrounding bushland. Despite its inner-city location, the structure has an almost tree house-like quality to it, relating to its waterfront position in subtle and interesting ways.
The original building was dilapidated and had a number of unsympathetic alterations. Being an architect’s own home and after being stripped back, SRG House was reimagined to capture an element of discovery, seen through the materials used and maintained.
The house stands as three storeys with an entrance at its middle level. To the left sits the kitchen, and adjacent to this is the dining area with inbuilt furniture. The house tour then follows the floor plan out to the living space that looks out towards the water. In the original structure, the downstairs space was underutilised and was transformed to become bedrooms and a lounge room overlooking the pool.
As an architect’s own home, the project uncovered the materials hidden underneath multiple layers of internal alterations. Stripping the structure back to its concrete frame, Studio Johnston used this as a cue to what contemporary materials would then be brought back into the interior design.
An architect’s own home, SRG House uses rich and earthy colours that relate to the original palette of the structure and to also soften the external elements. Brass benchtops, a custom-built BBQ, Artedomus INAX tiles and custom-made light birch plywood joinery feature throughout the residence. As an architect’s own home, the materials had to work with the harsh geometry of the building itself. The structure faces both west and south, a challenge due to the use of extensive glass used. High performance glass was installed to maximise the sunlight whilst also still retaining the desired original rhythm and façade aesthetic.

There is nothing about this home I don’t love. It is timeless, dramatic yet cozy, emotional and intellectually stimulating and so sensual. Brilliant.

My partner and I have a routine where we watch these videos over lunch, and when someone says “materiality” we cheer while our dog looks on in confusion.

I was just wondering when he said that word if it is actually a real word or a made up one? I live in the UK and have never heard that word before and I am an architect.

@@jmk1962 I think they are referring to the actual materials of the home and how they work together to create the environment they were looking to create. From the cork flooring, to the wood walls and the deep red tiles - it creates a very dynamic and soft space

why are all the most amazing architectural houses in Australia and Malaysia/Singapore?Indonesia? The US is so far behind our houses are so boring
@a24-45
@a24-45 2 года назад
as an Australian I want to know this answer too. I have given up looking online for inspiration at new North American homes and decor. There must be many architects in North America who adore contemporary style, have they no clients who are in love with it too and aspire to it?-- or are the architects of the contemporary in North America compelled to leave and work elsewhere...
@anonymousjustice4357

Two words : DISPOSABLE CULTURE…Its unfortunately that this applies also in architecture in the US…we make everything cheap and fast.

What a welcome relief to the white on white so often seen on interior channels. The darkness of the interiors often gets mistaken for making an interior smaller- I disagree. It adds emotion and the darkness pulls the surfaces away from your eyes. Interesting to see how harmonious the furniture chosen works with the ceilings, carpets and walls- they were made for each other. Bravo. 👏🏽

An incredible re-imagining of a 70s gem. Somehow it feels more natural and lived-in than the original. More depth, texture and shape and an almost seamless integration with the landscape and unique positioning of the site.

Wow!,,, Well, what to say? I am a designer in Los Angeles and Palm Springs who specializes in period restoration; namely of Mid Century/Late Modern homes. What a Late Modern jewel you have on your hands here! I especially love that you rightly took your design cues from the existing, original design and materials. How many fabulous, inspiring Modern treasures have been destroyed by "designers" who think they know better than the Mid Century Modern Masters??? My exact philosophy in my work goes something like this: "I listen to the HOUSE FIRST... THEN (and only then) do I listen to myself". It is so validating and refreshing to see the stunning results of another great designer doing the very same thing. The impact of this sort of astute work is obvious and palpable. Congratulations on succeeding at the noble task of ushering in a timeless classic that will shine for years to come. All the very best from California. -Daniel Krog

Utterly stunning!! This is my kind of style: the earthy colours, use of wood and yes concrete. I hate concrete on its own but when it's married with timber it conveys another aesthetic altogether...A beautiful, warm and inviting home. I love the garden area; so peaceful and calm. The colour scheme is especially lovely.

Beautiful renovation. The use of birch plywood and cork flooring works beautifully. I was excited to hear about the improvements you made to your windows. The problems you initially experienced reminded me of the State of Illinois building which is located in Chicago, Illinois in the USA. It's an all glass state government building which unfortunately is impossibly to keep cool in summer and difficult to keep warm in winter. I have often wondered if there have been improvements to glass technology. So I was delighted to hear that there have been improvements. I also love the use of vegetation around the home. It feels so natural. Thank you!
