An Easy Guide On How To Change Strings And Setup A Floyd Rose Tremolo

In this video I demonstrate and east way to change strings and setup a Floyd Rose tremolo, as well as what to do if you are changing tunings and/or string gauges. I use my Schecter Diamond Series "explorer" in this video and show the technique I use when doing one string at a time. I also decide to go from e flat to standard tuning, which required some claw adjustment to get the bar to float properly. I also provide tuning tips and get into the weeds with a real time demonstration. I hope the video is easy to follow and makes sense. Over time, this process gets a lot easier. Good luck and have fun, and while you're at it... if you haven't... please subscribe!

TY for your variety of videos from great songs to setups. There aren't many channels with variety of these types.

Yes, I used to do them 1 at a time, once I tried to put a lower gauge mixed set on it and pulled the tremolo up badly, and I had to go a different route to make it work… I love your vids by the way! Brother from another mother…

These videos are invaluable Marty; really appreciate it. I have a local friend/luthier who does an amazing job so I doubt I would ever attempt this on my own but...if I did I would refer to this video!

I just block it and tune it then unblock it and adjust screws till back in pitch and fine adjust with thumb screws. Same w strat just no thumb screws. This takes to long but thank you 🙏 😊

Another suggestion, You can see the blade on the side of the tremolo, that should be horizontal. Some tremolos the top face is slanted and is not a good indication if the trem is level.

Right around 19min. when you strummed I was ready to hear Welcome to my Nightmare! Also good tip to start with fine tuners about halfway. I always forget also.

Never owned a guitar that stayed in tune so well as my Custom Mahogany Strat with a Floyd Rose I in it.

Thanks Marty! I'm sure you have them but if you don't you can buy those magnetic trays for mechanic work that will hold any steel screws and such while you work on stuff. Aluminum and brass a little trickier though. Harbor freight has a bunch of sizes and they're real cheap.

I don’t have a floating bridge. I have a wolfgang Floyd rose bridge (which unless I’m mistaken is easier than a floating bridge), but any info I can learn with changing strings/tunings on a Floyd rose is appreciated since it’s the hardest endeavor mankind has ever had to accomplish.

Great video, have you ever tried blocking the trem where you want it, tune, flip over adjust trem claws till block falls out, retune done.

I watched one guy on YT restring a Floyd Rose. He keeps the ball end on, and runs the string backwards where the ball ends are up on the tuning pegs. He cut the string about an inch past the bridge for a little slack and would poke the string in, lock it down, and tune it up. My question to you is does the orientation of the string make any difference in tonal quality, or is a string just a string, no matter which way it's facing? Thanks Marty, love your videos brother.
@Ranch5150SkinWalker
@Ranch5150SkinWalker 2 месяца назад
It really doesn't matter. I do know on some of the strings the non ball end is really thin and gets thicker as it goes so I would be concerned about that. There is reinforcement near the ball end so I would think it prevents string breakage at the bridge. I think some guys started doing it the way you described because they didn't have a snipping tool or string cutter. There's way too much string anyway di you need to cut it so I figure do it the way it's typically done. Just makes more sense to me. But I'm set in my ways doing it like this since the late 80's. 😃🍻🎸

Top mounts are the way to go, unless you’re covering Pantera or Satriani, or Vai.

I have changed strings several times on a Floyd. I have issues with my LTD Kamikaze as the nasty string buzz on the low E string. I have gotten the bridge level and upgraded to Steel Floyd 1000 saddles too. Still have bad string buzz. Any suggestions?
@Ranch5150SkinWalker
@Ranch5150SkinWalker 2 месяца назад
If the buzz is on the first-third fret loosen the truss rod. Turn it 1/4-1/2 crank to the left. If it's higher up the fret board raise your saddle or bridge a little. Then you may have to tighten the truss rod a little. (If the action is too high but probably not) Lastly. Try to find out if there is one specific fret that is the issue. You may have one high fret. A fret file and some mild filing can fix the issue within a few minutes. Take a small fret rocker or small straight edge and see if you have a high fret.
