I LOVE this idea!! I NEVER could get a color wheel straight in my head. BUT this is a GREAT way to do it. LOVE watching you!

My favorite Sarah tip for choosing color - look to nature (or photos of nature). ❤ Nice to see Ginger Cat again! 🐈

Yes this has been very useful Sarah, thank you. It is very empowering when you teach us how to approach difficult aspects of our hobby with confidence. I used to always buy kits or at least copy colours used by designers because I didn't trust my ability to pair up colours that would work together. I absolutely love colours and know what I like in a scene or picture so I'm going to have a ball now. ❤

This is SOOO incredibly BRILLIANT and HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU so so so much!!! I sometimes enjoy coloring in adult coloring books, in addition to my intermittent (beginner) needlework (I am a serial hobbyist or multi-crafter who doesn’t do any one thing for long or very well😂😂), so when this video came up in my RU-vid feed I was thinking of my struggle to decide on coloring palettes… Please be encouraged that your method/process is also helpful to crafters and creatives who may never handle a needle or piece of thread!! Thanks so much for sharing & inspiring!! Greetings from Pennsylvania USA! 🤗

As a graphic designer, I definitely use this! Seed catalogs are another fun way to pick colors! Especially if it has heirloom veggies and flowers. PS: Hi Ginger Cat!

I love sparkly, so the Moline Etoile floss is always a favorite, but - oh my - the Anchor Linen color palette that you put together for the sunset in Mykinos is simply perfect! Love, love, love! ❤ Nice to see Ginger Cat, who I hope is having a good start to 2024. 😀

Great resource ideas for inspiration. I think sometimes we get so caught up in a limited palette, that if we look around, we can expand and create more intense and beautiful pieces. I appreciate your instruction and encouragement. Thank you from Ontario, Canada

Thank you Sarah and Jonathan for the video and hello ginger cat. This was so useful. I am about to undertake a slow stitch project with no safety net , so it will be no pattern or following anyone's colours . There will be a theme, I was really worried about colour never mind the design. The idea of taking a picture and matching colours is so simple but ingenious ,one less thing to worry about.

I choose colour pallets in a similar way when making quilts. The first fabric I choose will be a multicoloured fabric that I really like, and then I choose the other colours for the quilt from colours in that first fabric. This way I'm confident that the colours will all look good together.

That was really great Sarah!. I love colour and pretty colourschemes, so to be able to choose your own in such a straightforward way is just brilliant!, and I particularly liked how you got the basic colours together and then started adding extras that 'went' with them. As always you give me the confidence to think I can do these things, so thank you

Excellent tip. It's also good to look at the proportions of colours used in the inspiration image. Often the brighter ones will be used in the smallest amount, and the more muted or neutrals in the largest amount. That doesn't mean you have to stick to that, of course!

I have had to do stuff like this before because I really do stick to my usual colors, as you had mentioned. I didn't think I would like the combos, but I ended up liking the different combos that I have found. Great video! ❤❤❤

like with the matisse, this idea is so simple i feel like i should have thought of it before, and yet it takes a master to identify the nuances of how to optimise a technique. thanks for the inspiration!

I think it's a sunrise! Sunsets are a lot more orange; sunrises tend to skew more blue/violet. It's like the visual version of the doppler effect, that's why stars with a red shift (longer wavelengths) are going away from us and stars with a blue shift (shorter wavelengths) are moving towards earth. As the light waves travel they get stretched or compressed, making the wavelengths longer and shorter.

Hi Sarah a question for you, once you have chosen a color scheme how do you determine which colors should be used next to each other? I have absolutely no idea how to do that. Or do I even need to worry about that once I use my color wheel to choose my colors. I hope I am making sense? Thank you for your video it has given me something to think about.

You can use a color wheel and the paint swatches. Choose one color and then do the same level across the swatch color level. Not sure what you call the paint sample cards in the outside the US.
