Weeds rule the plant kingdom. They have evolved to survive the harshest of conditions. Any bare soil is a magnet. Good no cost solution. Well done Greg.

Great idea after slugs are gone

I have often used these opened paper lawn bags, and cardboard, for weed suppression. I typically cut off just the bottom of the bag along the 4 bottom creases, then open the bag up along the glued seam. This will allow you to cover larger areas.

Thank you for inspiring gardeners to recycle. Great idea in reusing the bags. Yes, cardboard lasts longer and over lapping the edges even helps more. I am in a senior living community and gardening in raised beds. I used cardboard and straw on the paths and people seem to have loved the end result. The path areas were loaded with crabgrass, creeping jenny and such. Only a weed none and then, easy to pull.

I use hay for this. It's messier, but it's what I've got. I unwind a couple of feet of round bale and twist an appropriately sized handful into a fat hank and lay it down between the rows. Messy, as I said, but it goes relatively fast. No huge amount of slugs here, either. Probably with a big slug population this might not work for me. I like the way you use everything. Keeps the garden neat as well. Nice video!

Do you not find the hay brings in alot more weeds? I too have hay readily available so I'm curious.

Great Video Greg....I stole this idea from you several years ago and I have found it works really well! I use the cardboard down and seed between method. Then when the cardboard starts breaking down I just remove my hold down stuff (rocks, scrap lumber, etc) and just add mulch on top of what is left of the cardboard. Great method and very effective. This year is probably the least amount of slugs we have seen - but the bird population has increased big time...Robin's are feasting I believe. Excellent video as usual Greg and Thank you for doing it! Have a great day. Mike 🇨🇦 🍁

I killed 99% of my weeds by laying black plastic (6 mil) down. In the fall I prepare the garden beds by putting compost and other amendments, and the right before the first frost, I cover it in black plastic and wait for spring. The first year I left the plastic in place and planted through it, but the second year, I removed the black plastic and my garden had zero weeds. Like you said, the weeds will come back, but I've found that it is very minimal, and I don't have to do what you're doing in order to keep weeds under control. I cover the garden every fall after I amend it and cover it until spring, and I've been able to maintain a relatively weed-free garden ever since.

I use the cardboard too but liked seeing what you do. I rake up the hay that the mowers leave alongside the road across the road from our place and I love putting it over the cardboard makes things look so much neater. I have patches of earth that I leave like that for a year. Then when I go to plant the next year I can uncover some nice open soil.

Yes, and eat the rotting weeds. Thankfully for this crop anyway, they really don't bother parsnips

Except one type of grass bermuda...it actually makes it lush. Only heat sterlization kills it...did u know its roots will easily go under a double concrete driveway.
@jdp6ofus
@jdp6ofus 2 года назад
I have Bermuda and 2 other grasses that actually punch holes through paper or cardboard or plastic mulch. After 3 years of digging each root all the way out, I'm finally seeing progress in my war on those 3 grasses. I've tried heat sterilization and covering with black plastic for months and still had those grasses alive but yellowed under it all while every other weed was dead. But at least that made it easy to find the grass roots and dig them out. NE AL

Art,here in Arkansas We have Bermuda grass here in abundance! I changed to no-till and heavy mulch this year. Weeding is a breeze,gardening is 'funner' now and growing very well. Nothing is perfect ....practice a little patience, have fun like Greg says!🤠😁

I hope people understand that when I say "an easy solution to garden weeds" - I don't mean "every weed on earth ever". I mean MOST weeds. This will not work for super weeds like horsetail, bermuda grass, coltsfoot, or goutweed.

In theory, this should work. In my experience, it does not work. It seems weeds will find their way through the cardboard or on either side. If I could get my garden to grow as well as the weeds, it would be magnificient!. I went to strictly containers this year and still have a few random weeds pop up.
@maritimegardening4887

In my experience it does work. As I said in the video - you have to pull the ones that find their way around it.
