This video shows an easy way to get a Timex wind up / mechanical watch to work + how to replace the crystal
I hope you find this video to be helpful. If you do please leave a like.
The watch we work on in this video has a Timex M24 movement. Another video that we think you will enjoy is our: How to adjust speed & regulate time Timex M24 M25 M27 mechanical wind-up watch movement M20 M22
We have many watch related videos on RU-vid.
After 72 hours the watch has kept excellent time. It has only gained one minute which is amazing for a vintage mechanical Timex. This about the same accuracy they had years ago straight from the factory.
The watch that we repair in this video is a 1974 Timex Mercury.
My wife and I are Christians. We support the US Constitution. All of our videos are family, Christian, and republican friendly.

Thank you for your video. It encouraged me to try to fix a sentimental watch given to me by my dad and making it useful instead of throwing it away or just keeping it stored. I will wear it now! Also, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on your politics and religion. I recently have been myself although I have not been the greatest human in my lifetime. We all need to speak up about our beliefs in religion and politics or they will destroy us.

Thank you so much, i just bought a 'retro' timex on ebay, beautiful little thing that's self winding, but the second hand was getting caught. i tried your lighter fluid method and was feared when it just stopped working but a moment later it was ticking along perfectly. thanks again sir.

Was the second hand getting caught on top of the minute hand? That’s happening right now with my vintage Timex..

Thank you for your nice words. Some of my videos embarrass me due to poor lighting and sound quality. I also seem to take too long to give out info. Many of my 15 min videos could have been 11 or 12 min. Thanks again for your nice words

The lighter fluid is safe for the dial? I was worried that it would take off the paint.
@demon1spence
@demon1spence 3 месяца назад
The best method is to remove the dial and hands first then you can get a really good soaking to remove gunk and grease. if you can't then lighter fluid evaporates very quickly so shouldn't cause lasting damage

Great video. I have a Timex 5160-2368, wafer thin, any idea how to get inside to work on it? How does the back come off?

Thanks for the nice words. I love the Timex wafer thin watches. They are hard to find. Unfortunately, I do not currently have one in the shop. If i come across one I'll look at it so i can help answer your question. If you want to you can send me a picture of the back of the watch. once I see what the back looks like then I think i can help.

I'm trying to replace the crystal on my Timex which looks very similar to the one on this video, and each time I get the wrong size sent to me. Can I send you a photo, maybe you can tell me the model # so I can determine the correct crystal size. Thanks and Happy New Year.

Thanks for the Video!!!! My phone only now just told me you released a Video. I'm the one that has the Original Timex camper people call the Macguyver watch .. I'd imagine might know the crystal size for this so I'll ask what size it is and also where can I get preferably the Bigger crystal remover and the crystal . Also will you be having any lower end Timex watches like this for sale in your store ? As always Godspeed Brother Great video

@@claudehiramsclassics6477 yes I've seen several different styles. One like yours as well. I've ordered one similar . I'd like to be able to replace my own watch crystal . Although I'm having trouble finding them . I'd like to be able to buy a couple of each size for not only my Timex original camper. But some other Timex watches I have . I suppose I'll have to invest in a cheap digital caliper. . would you sell or be able to direct me to where I might be able to purchase some crystals? Really like the videos please keep them coming they are so Informative. Godspeed

This is a great video on what not to do to any watch ever created. That "clean" did almost nothing, the oil was completely the wrong type, far too much was used and you can see the balance wheel barely moving. It should be swing in fast free rotations. This took a $10 watch and made it a $1 watch. Best part is that all that oil soaked up all the unremoved grime and created a grinding paste which will turn the watch into a $0 bin filler.

I don't see your video up here! Maybe you naysayers should consider that? The encouragement that it's possible alone is worth the time to watch as far as I'm concerned. I almost threw away my Dad's old timex he treasured and did not because of this video. There are many ways to "skin a cat" as the saying goes and I'm on the same page with this fellow. I didn't have the lighter fluid he recommended and used brake parts cleaner to clean my watch and was thrilled to get it going!

Your probably right. If I put a good leather band on it I would get a little more. I like to undervalue my watches that I talk about on RU-vid because I'm afraid people will think I'm exaggerating. As it is maybe it's real worth is $30ish? What is your opinion.
@robertromeo762
@robertromeo762 Год назад
Your entitled to give your opinion, but $15 dollar mechanical watches are rare. A cheap quartz watch maybe. Don't be fooled by price. Some cheap priced watches can last a long time.

0:44 This is the appropriate method for this watch, no need to put a $250 full disassembly, clean, lubricate and reassemble into a watch worth $10, if it runs. Even better might be a good blast of WD-40, this will clean and lube all at once.
@Deconstructeur
@Deconstructeur Год назад
For goodness sake, don’t drench the movement in lighter fluid without at least removing the dial and hands! You were lucky not to erase any printing on the dial! Plus you refer to the Timex manual. They recommend to remove the balance before any cleaning. And the amplitude you got on the balance after your “service” is pretty weak. That watch won’t run for long. Give it a proper service and don’t go for easy solutions that produce poor results.

Go easy man... he's showing a different solution for those who just want a quick fix. He even says some will not agree with this method at the beginning. he has another video that shows you the proper way to do all this, but this is the "quick and dirty" way if you want to go that route.
