An Ejection I DO Like - Umpire Discussion with Coach After Controversial Call in High-A Jersey Shore

If the ball was fair, the runner was going to get two bases regardless of how the right fielder played the ball. My problem is with the umpire down the line. He was in no position to make a call on the line. Umpire needs to have an angle to make the call. Umpire should have moved to the foul territory prior to the pitch.

​@@billbuffington3037 it's a 2 umpire system, they did all they could, because he has to take BR to 2B on the trouble ball. This is just a tough call in a 2 umpire system. Right foot beside the line is the proper positioning for P2 though.

I have rung up batters on strike two more than once. It's embarrassing, but it happens.

Yep. The majority of times I've mistakenly rung up a batter on fewer than three strikes has been when the previous batter had a considerable number of pitches in his at-bat. While "strike three" is coming out of my mouth I'm already thinking "Oh, no! This is not strike three."

Assuming the line was properly drawn, the ball was fair if it made the chalk fly up.

I umpired Little League games for 12 years. One manager was busting a gut tearing down my strike zone on offense and defense. In the third inning with his team pitching I called time out and went into the dugout then put the ball back in play. His pitcher threw 2 pitches which I called balls cuz you have to see a strike. These could have been in the strike zone (no batter swings). When I told the manager he was right, he could see the strike zone better from his dugout than I couls behind the plate he pleaded with me to get behind the plate and shut up the entire game.

@Don Keylips Had he chased the ball to the bullpen, he'd be way out of position for his responsibility at second base, which would be much likelier to cost him a chance at promotions than what you posed. Rocket liners happen at every pro level, expected to happen like this. Get real.

@Don Keylips Hard liners will always be tough calls and the plate umpire has a better read on that ball than the field umpire given the circumstances of that ball. The plate umpire will know that the ball was fair across the bag and has position on the call whether it is fair or foul. Given the field umpire's need to be at second this was the best way to resolve the fair/foul AND be in proper position to make a call at second. Plate umpires ARE responsible for fair/foul down 1st and 3rd lines when the field umpire is in B or C, so calling a fair ball that the field umpire couldn't see while in A isn't a stretch of the imagination. The ONLY time a field umpire should turn and see a ball along the line is when there's enough time to do so. Meaning it's not screaming past him at 150 mph. And ONLY IN THAT SITUATION does the Plate umpire need to be at second for a call. This ball got to the line so quickly, there was no time for him to turn.

plate u call up to the bag, but here the 1u had to play it as fair because he didnt see it, hesitation by pu was good because he had to wait to se if 1u had it or not. great calls, you can always fix fair to foul but never foul to fair

If you're tipping your hat for the foul call you might want to put it back on. You can see the chalk kick up from the foul line. Not only that where the 1B ump is positioned you can see the ball go behind his leg that is aligned with the foul line before it hits foul.

That is true if it's a bounding ball, if it's a fly ball or line drive, it is fair or foul depending on where the ball first lands beyond the base.

I made a similar comment. Batter had two strikes, committed what looked like a pitch clock violation but wasn’t given strike three ; then the pitcher was called for a pitch clock violation and a ball was added to the count.

negative. first base was open/unoccupied, therefore the field/base umpire is in the "A" position. in the "A" position, he has fair/foul responsibility BEYOND FIRST BASE: ground balls, line drives, and fly balls. so on a routine play, he SHOULD have made a fair/foul call. however, as i have so expertly pointed out above, this play was anything but routine and his judgment to defer to the plate umpire was not only correct but wise.

@@granthampubunderground so if the base umpire is in "a" position, and a fly ball or line drive goes over the first baseman's head close to the foul line, and lands about 40 or 50 feet beyond the base, you're saying that's the home plate umpire's call? respectfully, i think not. at that point, he's at least (90+40) 130 feet away, with a batter/runner, probably the first baseman, and the "a" position umpire between him and where the ball lands. the "a" position umpire is already standing on the line, tracking the ball (turning his back to the plate and heading down the foul line). he's now less than 20 or so feet away and has an unobstructed line of sight to where the ball lands. and the second his back is turned, the plate umpire assumes responsibility for the batter/runner. please feel free to check any level of umpire's manual for 2-man crew assignments.

Baseball's designed with the intention that sometimes rule interpretations can in fact be adjusted if one side presents good evidence. The best example of this stuff actually happening are HBP calls. There was a famous instance in the 1969 world series where the Mets were able to get a batter awarded 1st base on a HBP that was not originally called by showing the umpires during argument the shoe polish which had rubbed off onto the ball when it hit the batter's foot. Such things have happened even in modern baseball - I believe it was last year that a guy was able to get a HBP call by showing the umpire the welt on his skin from the ball when the HBP was missed. Similarly, some rules are really obscure and even umpires won't catch them immediately and they have to be pointed out. You see this with weird substitution and batting out of order type scenarios in some instances - in fact, batting out of order and similar concerns *require* action by the opposing team to enforce them - the umpire may observe that the batting team is hitting out of order, but they do not do anything unless the opposing team notices and objects, and they're not supposed to. This scenario, of course, is none of those things, and a lot of arguments don't have anything to do with the umpire - for instance, a majority of MLB ejections fall into the category of 'manager has an upset player, intervenes and takes over the argument and gets tossed so his player doesn't get himself tossed'. Everyone involved knows what's happening, and in many cases I imagine the umpires and managers know (or even say, if they're not yelling loudly enough for the player to hear them) that that's what's really going on. Plenty of anecdotes of MLB managers actually saying to umpires during argument "I'm gonna get tossed here, so you might as well get it over with".

you're right that it doesn't happen in other sports, but in basketball, hockey and football, referees are often close enough to bench or sideline throughout the game for a coach to plead a case or at worst, yell at the referee. So, I don't mind managers being able to go out and argue a rule or debate a section of the rulebook or get clarification on a call. And if they get tossed, well, that was the risk. The managers today are nowhere near as verbose as the managers I grew up with in the 60s and 70s, so it's pretty tame in today's game. It's also not stupid to go out there. If you plead your case properly, if you truly think you were wronged, you can at least keep the umpire crew focused.

I mean, it's the Jersey Shore team, so the uniforms SHOULD be tacky to keep with the theme. With the blue hats I think they look like Southwest Airlines' "hot dog on a stick" plane livery.

Why should he be upset with the plate umpire? Dude had to make a call with the 1st base umpire in the way. All he had to do was turn, make a call, then button hook in to take the runner to 2nd. I realize this is Single A ball so kudos to both for getting the call right and handling the moronic manager. BTW, what was he arguing about lol?!?

Apparently, you didn’t pay full attention to the narrator’s comments when she stated that the Umpire didn’t “call” the batted ball fair. There, is that clear enough?

Uhhhhh no. Once an individual is ejected, he MUST leave. Not should, must. The other umpire needs to step in and facilitate this. Coach has already wasted everyone’s time arguing a judgement call (a judgement call cannot be argued, by definition). He needs to go immediately.

I was worried he was going to stay in the dugout and dare the umps to do something about it. Even the amount of time he stayed there seemed outside the spirit of the rules.
