I love IMOCAS with all my heart but nothing ever beats a VO65 doing its thing... they're truly beautiful boats!!!

Agreed. I'd give the edge to the VO70s for brute power, but the 65s record for toughness is impressive.

The VO65s are what this race is all about. The IMOCAs are solo racing boats - the autopilot kills it IMHO

@@anguswhitfield6113 I was today's year old when I discovered that ppl can use autopilot in races?! interestingly enough, the two leaders on the run to Gibraltar didn't seem like they were using it.

As we all probably suspected, the on-board footage from the VO65s will be superior. It's stunning. The helicopter footage of the IMOCAs will be great too.

Can't wait to see the helicopter footage of how the extreme IMOCA designs handle that upwind work. Can't really tell from the tracker whether they are still faster than the V065s in those conditions.
@rydenkaye9735
@rydenkaye9735 Год назад
They shouldn’t be by design. They are optimized almost entirely for downwind only advantage they have is the foils provide more righting moment but the masts can only take so much, and the imoca scow bows do worse than the vo65 when going into swell.

Thanks to all of the OBRS and the on shore editing teams!!! AND to all of the sailors and their teams! I absolutely love getting a glimpse of the race. I cannot imagine how challenging it is for the OBR to get footage and stay out of the way of the crew and then try to edit a little ??? Edited to add: And thanks to the efforts in English. I know that not all are English as first language.

I think I would rather be on a V65 than an OMACA. Unless those boats slow down a bit every crew is going to be injured and I’m really having my doubts anyone will make it. I don’t see how anyone could even eat. It looks just brutal and it has only been two days.

When sailed single handed the skippers don’t push their boats nearly as hard as with a crew. Iirc some of the vendee skippers said they were only going about 80% or less. So while the vendee is extreme this will be worse

Curious why they don't just add more mass to the keel bulb. 1816 more kg would only result in the boat sitting about 2cm lower in the water, but the additional over-heeling insurance would be worth it, would it not? Imagine that 1816kg (4000 pounds) as a lever to prevent the boat going over too far. that is a lot of leverage, especially on a deep centerboard they seem to use. Also, imagine how much more power they could extract from the wind if they could rely on that much extra mass. I know the centerboard would have to be heavier to hold that mass up, but what of it? How about 3000 extra kg? It's only about 166L of extra lead that can be extremely streamlined under the water. 3000 kilos of mass can REALLY help a sailboat stay upright. IN FACT, to balance that out, couldn't they have outrigger pontoons that ONLY go underwater when the boat heels to the other side? A 3000L pontoon could provide enough flotation only when heeled to cancel the mass of the 3000kilos of lead, while simultaneously adding leverage to lift the boat and keep it out of the water, and fully-submerged streamlined masses are far lower in their drag than boat hulls that have to deal with surface physics. With the boat having an extra 3000kg in the keel and an extra 3000kg of buoyancy in a pontoon, that would provide, given a 5m-tall centerboard and 30 degree list with a static centerboard, 8660 kg-m of extra torque to counteract any wind. This amount increases with the angle of heel, peaking at 15,000kg of torque supposing they got the boat laying flat on its side. 15,000 kg-m of torque should easily be able to right the boat OR prevent it's falling over in the first place. That is the equivalent of 1000kg of force applied against gravity 15m up the mast. I don't even know if the M5 could stay laid over on its side with 1000kg of force 15m up the masts. The extra power one could extract from the wind under all conditions, coupled with the extra stability of the boat could more than make up for any drag induced. I am well familiar with the fact that the wings they use push up on the side of the boat with dynamic lift, but static lift and weight would provide stability under all circumstances, even the most extreme, especially the most extreme. The wing shapes of the daggerboards which work to provide counter-torque to the sails does not come free, but with a drag penalty, also. I do not think the rules allow pontoons, however, but I can see their value in a dynamic sailing situation. These only weigh 12,500kg, so the amount of sheer torque provided by the extra mass and flotation would cause them to need a truly super-sturdy set of rigging, sails, and mast. But, oh, the speed they could achieve. They may consider going with a hull shape that is substantially more of a fine entry to minimize violent wave slap as they sailed, which killed one America's Cup yacht. They may have to go with an even more-cylindrical front section of the boat. I understand that the extra mass causes extra drag through the water, at the most important place, the surface, but if said extra mass was offset by a pontoon would it really matter? Also, the deck area needs to be far more streamlined. Any water you accelerate to boat speed by the very non-fluid-dynamically-efficient deck area and unguarded personnel is water that is slowing you down. The helmsman needs a fairing to help the water slide gracefully past him and off the deck; he doesn't need to be a parachute or sea anchor for tons of water coming over the cabin.
@jackdbur
@jackdbur Год назад
They probably already achieve their full displacement speed for their water line length. Pontoons would make them trimarans which are now getting out of the water on foils because it's much faster. Without the IMOCA's stay poles i would suspect that the hull loading from the stays would be too much. You would also have to reinforce the pivot system = more weight worse light air performance.

@theroadhome_Liz_Summers
@theroadhome_Liz_Summers Год назад
@@johnlowe8418 Yes (fatigue and equip failure) … but to add to the cliche list … it takes a bit to get their “sea legs” and no doubt the first 2 days of this leg were unusually tough. AND it is never all smooth sailing. The fatigue will ebb and flow, the crews will learn to manage themselves and they will fix [most] things. Maybe all of the boats will not finish and maybe some of the crew will change, but my perspective (optimistic) is that based on reading/watching ocean sailing races … there is incredible determination and perseverance that will take most around the world and we get to watch!!

Its too hard on the crew at speeds that IMOCA's can do like the trimarans. You try driving around with your head out in the air stream (preferably in a rain storm) for several hours then think about DAYS of that. I've never liked the cockpit set-up of the VOR yachts that is horrible for ocean racing constantly taking large amounts of water & spray without any shelter. The designers should have been made to sail on such a deck in heavy weather before it was finalised.
