Most of your series stood the test of time. This one is certainly one of them. The gritty music played in low notes really gives you that medieval feel of the dark ages
@@joellaz9836 well if you want to be very specific that is true. However "dark ages" is a pretty common term used to describe the medieval era as a whole. The phrase "Dark Age" itself derives from the Latin saeculum obscurum, originally applied by Caesar Baronius in 1602 when he referred to a tumultuous period in the 10th and 11th centuries (taken from wikipedia).

Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’” 2 - Exodus 21:20-21 20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property. 3 - Matthew 10:34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” 4 - Numbers 31 : 13 - 18 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army - the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds - who returned from the battle. 15 “ Have you allowed all the women to live ? ” he asked them. 16 “ They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. 5 - Deuteronomy 20:16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 6 - Ezekiel 9 : 5 - 6 5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion. 6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple. 7 - Isaiah 13 : 15 - 16 15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. 16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives violated 8 - Hosea 13 : 16 The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.” 9 - Joshua 6 : 21 - 24 21 They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it-men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. 22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. 24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 10 - Zechariah 14 : 2 " I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city."

A lot of older knights went on the Crusades, knowing that they wouldn't be coming back. As for the younger knights, it was the perfect opportunity for those looking for promotions, or looking to earn their knighthood by combat. Common fighters who had been trained for combat, but didn't have titles, went along expecting to come back as "Sir."

@MondoBeno Nope. Knighthood was given in Europe, and not a single foot soldier expected to upgrade to knight. It is a Victorian romantic view about these times, that doesn't fit reality by far. The fairy tales of lone knights fighting for a ladies honor are from the 19th century. To maintain yourself as a knight you had to have three trained horses, full armor, swords in good shape, ten to twenty foot soldiers to look after all your gear, enough food to feed yourself and your personnel, bows, arrows, and other gear for your soldiers etc etc. So they were not travelling from castle to castle as romantics want you to think, they had to own a big estate, with lots of farms, who each delivered a soldier in times of combat. And their tasks as knight were combined with other official tasks like policing, tax collection, local judge, and advisor of the duke, count or bishop they served. And it may surprise you: They had to be married! This caused problems with the knight orders that were founded, by joining them the knight left all his earthly possessions to the order and disinherited his wife and offspring. That is how those orders became extremely rich. The 'marriage' between knight and order had to be at least three years for his family to loose everything, so the order did all they could to keep him alive for those years, often the only reason for a knight to become a member in these harsh circumstances.
@@dutchman7623 I disagree. A sergeant at arms could be knighted, and it happened. You had to be able to ride a horse, but non-titled could be knighted. And not all knights had to train/equip their own men. It depended on the deal that you made with whoever's vassal you were.
You have to remember by the time the crusaders got to Jerusalem. They were already battle hardened basically all of them were skillful knights, letholdus was the first knight to scale the walls, its said he was a massive 7'4"(insane for the time) and just by the sight of him in full plate armor was enough to scare the defenders into retreating off the walls

Actually, his accent is far more rhotic than the Standard British Accent. Initially, it made his narration seem more epic, but it's become quite irritable for me, and that sort of feel doesn't go well with this period of history, either. After watching the video, I am disappointed that many important details are left out, leaving the story not flowing well. For better tellings of medieval history, channels like Kings and Generals and Flash Point History are definitely better. Extra History's series on the First Crusade, while not showing the battles, and only having still images, has a lot of interesting information about the characters and people, that is not mentioned in other tellings of it, from other channels. Kings and Generals and Flash Point History show more maps with battles, with less of a focus on the personal side. This video only provides a brief overview of the First Crusade, probably intended for people who don't already know much about medieval history. For people who already do, Epic History is doing a disservice, and this video probably isn't worth watching. The non-medieval videos are good, though.

Did muslims in these 400 years massacre christians? Killed children? Like what crusaders did when they took down the muslim cities? You need to know that muslim conquests were strictly organised to not kill innocent people, the killing occurs only during battles (this did not include killing of women even if they were in the battle field, just men), whenever a city is conquered, the people of this city become part of the islamic caliphate people, they can continue their lives normally and practice their faith freely, these things are documented by christian historians not just by muslims, for example, when Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, the second caliph, conquered Jerusalem, it occurred without a drop of blood, the christians in it handed him the keys peacefully and he made contracts with them to not harm them in any way, and he brought back the jews who were exiled from Jerusalem by christians and gave them their rights. But what happened when crusaders invaded muslims lands? You can search about that to see that for example when they took down Jerusalem, they killed any muslim or jew in it, they literally smashed the children heads, historical documents say that the blood in Jerusalem on that day reached knees.

The Crusaders couldn't hope to conquer the entire Middle East with the army that they had. So they focused on the Holy Land. Attacking the Seljuk Turks would have distracted from that goal.
My area is 19th Century history. What is so surprising is that the same cities in the Levant are involved in much of the world's unrest, and have been so for as long as we have even had a notion of history. It seems that crossroads of the world is destined to suffer grief always.
What's interesting about the crusader times is two-fold: 1) The Christian Crusaders were made up of factions and the various Arab and Turkic powers were made up of various factions. And they all fought each other and allied with different partners at different times, sometimes a Christian group and a Muslim group against some other Christian or Muslim group. It was not merely "Christians vs Muslims". Everyone was vying for political power (like usual, of course!). And then the Mongols finally arrived which threw an overwhelming monkey wrench into the mix. 2) As Tamim Ansary explains in his book, the Muslim world considered the Christian Crusader foray into the Holy Land as a relatively short lived blip on the great time line of history, and their main threats were other Muslim empires (remember there were Fatimids, Ayyubids, Abbasids, Seljuk Turks, other Turks, Mamluks in Egypt after the Fatimids and Ayyubids, and the most threatening bulldozer of empires of all.....the Mongols.
This is a fairly good documentary of the First Crusade. There is so much left out though, because the video length constraint. @@bot9378Christianity is what the human rights declaration founded itself upon in all societies slavery was practiced but it was the christians that decided to put an end to it. The Christians had a better view of human life than the pagan believers of Rome, Greece and etc. The philosophers of Greek and Roman antiquity “lacked the concept of human dignity,” Harper explains. As Christianity became more widespread, leaders of the church developed more influence, and some rulers even became Christians. This “created the grounds for the development of human rights.” I might have noted that you can find sources for universal human dignity in the Hebrew Bible as well. These advocates of late antiquity were drawing off of principles from both the Old and New Testaments. But starting in the AD 300s, “we find Christians, for the first time, in positions of sovereign control and social leadership, empowered rather than persecuted.” What would they do with that power? We should not exaggerate the extent of their advocacy of human rights, but certain Christian writers did break away from longstanding social practices related to slavery, prostitution, and neglect of the poor. Based on Christian convictions, they sometimes made first-in-world-history arguments against these practices. They did not need to wait for Jefferson or Immanuel Kant to enlighten them. Slavery is the most intriguing case. The institution, in which many people were treated (and mistreated) as commodities, was pervasive in the ancient world. Harper makes the uncomfortable but fair point that the Scripture itself did not contain immediately obvious passages which would absolutely prohibit owning slaves per se. We don’t have much evidence to suggest that the early church typically moved beyond the Pauline admonitions for slaves to obey masters, and for masters to treat slaves fairly. This makes especially conspicuous a sermon of the fourth-century Church Father Gregory of Nyssa, in which he began to criticize slavery as an institution. As Harper notes, this is a breathtaking departure since we have no other such extant criticisms of slavery “from the entire ancient world.” Although Gregory’s criticisms seem to have attracted little notice at the time, it was “no small distinction to be the earliest human to have left an argument for the basic injustice of slavery.” Quite a milestone! Gregory’s sermon is on Ecclesiastes, and details the sins of those who have become prideful because of their wealth. In the ancient world, such pride was often manifested in the owning and maltreatment of slaves. Gregory does not just indict the masters for abusing slaves, however. He rages against the “sheer arrogance of slave ownership” itself. As made by God, humans were naturally free beings, and slavery made a mockery of their natural state. Christian leaders made even more progress in their critique of prostitution, and the treatment of the poor. With regard to prostitution, Christian rulers helped to make many kinds of coerced sex illegal by the end of the fifth century, something that would have been unthinkable without Christian concepts of human dignity. Elsewhere I have described “equality by creation” as the most powerful concept to emerge from the American Revolution. But really, it is a concept with deeper roots in the Judaeo-Christian tradition. Many Christians in antiquity, and for centuries afterward, continued to accept practices like chattel slavery. But the spread of Christianity opened unheard-of possibilities for reform, based on the notion that we all stand equal before our Creator.
@@bot9378 Religion has been the cause of 7% of all wars, accounting for 2% of the deaths caused by war. The same cannot be said of atheist communist or nationalist governments in just the last century. While, for example, it is estimated that approximately one to three million people were tragically killed in the Crusades, and perhaps 3,000 in the Inquisition, nearly 35 million soldiers and civilians died in the senseless, and secular, slaughter of World War 1 alone. An objective look at history shows a very different picture. Wars in the name of religion have been only a tiny fraction of the history of warfare. Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod in their 3-volume Encyclopedia of Wars identify 1,763 separate wars as forming the entire history of recorded warfare. Of these, only 123 were classified has having a religious cause. That’s not much at all. That’s only 7% of all wars in recorded history! 7% isn’t even close to a majority. In fact, you know what that’s called? A minority. Aren’t the Wars of Religion the bloodiest of all wars? That 7% of wars represents the bloodiest of all wars, right? The ones with the highest body counts, right? Let’s see … Here are the bloodiest wars in history: World War II (1939-1945) - 70-118 million people died Mongol Conquests (13th century) - 60-70 million, according to legend around one million Chinese people committed mass suicide just to avoid the Mongolian conquest World War I (1914-1918) - 40 million Three Kingdoms (184-280 AD) - 30-40 million, the division of China into the Kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu, following the end of the Han dynasty and the Yellow Turban Rebellion, a Taoist uprising The Manchu Conquest of China (17th century) - 25 million None of these were religious wars. What do you think was the bloodiest “religious” war in history? The Crusades, right? No. The first one on the list that could be construed as “religious” was the Taiping Rebellion. An estimated 20-30 million died in this Chinese uprising. The uprising was led by Hong Xiuquan, who called himself the Son of God and the brother of Jesus. Hong sought to convert the Chinese people to his religious movement, The God Worshiping Society. Ultimately, the goal of the Taipings was the overthrow of the Manchu dynasty. It is difficult to classify the Taiping Rebellion as a religious conflict, much less a Christian one. Hong’s appeal was not his Christian message, but his economic one. He advocated an early version of communism, which, as we know, would eventually take root in China. So in the history of warfare, what percent of people who died in religious conflicts? Less than 2 percent of all people killed in warfare. While, for example, it is estimated that approximately one to three million people were tragically killed in the Crusades, and perhaps 3,000 in the Inquisition, nearly 35 million soldiers and civilians died in the senseless, and secular, slaughter of World War 1 alone. Where do the Crusades rank among the deadliest wars in history? Top ten, right? Nope. According to this list of the top 100 wars and armed conflicts with highest estimated death tolls, the Crusades rank at No. 24. Also, remember, the Crusades were a defensive maneuver against the ongoing Muslim conquest of Europe: Bloodiest Christian conflict in history? The Reconquista. This was the nearly 800-year period of Spanish history following the Muslim conquest of Spain and Portugal, the Iberian Peninsula. Like the Crusades above, this was a defensive effort. Y'all don't fall for anything, study history comparatively

During that time Byzantine armies were a lot lighter than western European knights so Turks miscalculated how much crusader lines could resist with their heavier armours and got caught off guard when crusader reinforcements arrived. Another mistake that after their defeat Turkish forces didn't allow crusader army to freely travel in Anatolia rather kept harrassing them constantly with hit-run attacks, supply route raids and scorched-earth tactics. It was the main reason why the crusader army traveled south away from Turkish obas in central Anatolia. An oba was basicly a mobile city consisting hundreds or even thousands of nomadic tents and vast majority of them were moved into fertile valleys of central Anatolia avoiding heavily populated areas which were also conflict zones like western and southern Anatolia. There weren't many obas in Syria as well simply because of desert conditions. This was why Atabeys who ruled Syrian territories had vast majority Arabic armies not Turkish and none of them ever used Sultan title which is wrongly shown in this video. Using Sultan title would mean they were no longer a part of Seljuk empire therefore they would also loose Seljuk protection and be overthrown by an Arabic Emir easily. However it is true even if Seljuk empire still existed it was extremely divided and couldn't act against crusaders. While some Seljuk Atabeys raised armies and tried to fight against them especially Atabeys who ruled Arabic territories as Antioch, Jerusalem etc were vast majority Arabic and Arabs were really eager to revenge massacres committed. For Turkish perspective the first crusade was a threat which was slightly touched to them..
Non of this was actually driven by religion as its been framed here , its just a coincidence that those fighting were religious... If you know anything about politics, the human condition & real history its simply a fact that this was all simply a fight for material resources as per usual... 😴 Videos like this are designed to create division, a feeling of 'them & us' & most importantly they are used to demonize religion today for political gain! Its the oldest communist trick in the book! How sinister 🤔 😊👍
A very interesting and well explained comment indeed, the video of Kings and Generals about that topic could be to your liking. I think they at least got it correct that the turks indeed charged the lines
The first place my mind always goes to is imagining how tough and masculine the members of the first crusade must have been. Particularly the 12,000 that made it to Jerusalem. Nowadays we regard the men who fought in WW2 as extremely tough. Can you imagine one of the First Crusaders? The life of a Medieval peasant was already brutal and full of PTSD. On top of that, these guys hacked and sliced their way across continents into a completely alien world, having to cannibalize children along the way in order to not die.
Yeah still man bombs going off 247 around you shocks your system like nothing else , like eating kids is crazed and depraved but the anxiety created by constant bombing and the impact of it sends guys mad
It went against all christian tradition in one swoop. Penance was a really important aspect of being christian back then. It unfolded sometimes for years. Confessions were completely different compared to today.
To be honest I don't know why you didn't release or make the third crusade, you only reuploaded the old 2 series of crusades?! I hope you can make the whole series like the ( Third crusade ) Salahu El Din ( Saladin ) and Richard the lion heart. And then the Mamluke Crusaders conflicts. It would be a nice series to be watched. Just an idea, Thank you.
Remember, this is a Christian channel. They present only the Christian victories not Christian failures. The video quality is good but people must watch these "historical" documentaries with a critical eye because they're all biased to some extent in favor of Christians and Christianity.
@@emir7135 Disaster? Look at it this way, u dont believe in christianity right? So crusaders came and looted u and ur women for 1000s of years and u never stepped a foot in england or france? Even in 1917 they made u run from jerusalem and last ottoman king mehmed wrote them letters begging for refugee lol 😂😂😂
For those who love the music EHTV uses throughout the videos as much as I do, here are the names of some of the tracks used throughout this video. @@pokiparkassistent check out the fall of the byzantine empire. Educate yourself. The Crusades were a long overdue retaliation against Islamic aggression. Sorry if that doesn't jive with your liberal world view.
@@deathntaxeset still islam didnt spent 1400 years of war on Christianity. So shut your mouth liar. Also the katholics also raided Constantinople but that was in 1450ies. Long after the first crusade. Sorry not sorry to hurt your nazi world view
@@deathntaxeset byzantine empire falls in 1453? so that happened long after the first crusade (the ninth crusade ends in 1272). islam is created in 610 so it had only existed for 500 years when the first crusade happened. 1400 years prior to the first crusade christianity didn’t even exist, so i’m intrigued to learn how the then non-existent muslims waged war on the non-existent christians in 300BC.
@@deathntaxeset muslims were merely fighting back against christian european violence and aggression. sorry if that doesn't fight against your racist trryanical worldview
The bias in the narrative goes as such: when describing the European Christian force; "religious fervor," "fanatics," "visions of angels." When describing the Turks: "Seljuk Turks," "Muslim force." LOL ok Epic history, the latter was definitely not driven by the religious fervor at all. Got it.
Seljuk turks, they were literally Seljuk Turks, and Muslim forces. This story depicts the christians a certain way but just look at the name of the channel 'epic' history. It has some glorification but that's just to make a better story. In reality the Christians sallied out and the local feuding Turkish warlords decided to abondon kerbogha because if he defeated the christians he would get to powerful
@@Eloign I mean, you could keep going back in time and claim the Turks were simply ousting the Byzantines who had originally invaded the area. Turkish expansion was very different from a Jihad
@@rjmoney9 Here's my point: What's up with people being apologists for the slaughter of Christians and then being outraged that they responded? That's disqualifying from being objective.
Morning Toby this two part series deserves to be continued with further episodes lol. Swear it My Man any documentary You create is art I'm blown away by this. Love the segment when You start listing the name's of Europes Noble/Feudal Lords.
@@jingojingo1 No Muslims spread the religion with death and occupation it’s absolutely not a peaceful religion. The Crusades stopped the Arab-Muslim expansion and was defensively very important for Europe
Thank you for not using Total War footage again. As much as I love that game, it was a bit goofy seeing it in some of the other vids. Your illustrations and animations are always clean and professional, should stick with that! Keep up the great work.
