In this eerie ghost story, a historian named Mr. Lake is dispatched to examine the archives of the Cathedral of Southminster and compile a report. During his stay in Southminster, he lodges in the verger's house, Mr Worby and the two men develop a friendly rapport.
One evening, Mr. Worby invites Mr. Lake to accompany him to the cathedral after dark. As they unlock the cathedral’s door, Lake inquires about past incidents of people being locked inside. Worby recounts an intriguing tale from fifty years earlier:
Dean Burscrough, an advocate of the Gothic Revival movement, takes charge of the cathedral. His mission is to strip away all additions made after medieval times. Among the changes, he insists on removing a pulpit.
Canon Ayloft, however, opposes the Dean’s decision and tries to preserve the pulpit.
The cathedral harbours a plain-looking stone tomb with a large metal cross on its north side. Despite its lack of notable history, a mysterious story exists associated with it.
As Worby narrates, strange events unfold: people living near the cathedral begin to die, others fall sick, and nightmares plague the afflicted.
Nighttime brings eerie noises and sightings of a shadowy figure with red eyes.
