A small correction. This is Greek music allright, but we call it "Cretan music" or "Critika" as we say in Greek.

Gabriel Traveler if you want to see impressive Venetian constructions (fortresses, walls, castles, monasteries, museums, noble houses, shipyards) you should definitely come to Chanià. The city "photographs "very clear all the faces of its history...you see Minoan ruins, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Arabic, Venetian, ottoman and newgreek (neoclassic) architecture. Crete is so big, you need months to discover the hole island. Enjoy Màtala!

Gabe, I've been a subscriber for awhile, but my Roku box just now fed me an option to watch via a "channel." Not sure if that's something you set up, and I've never gotten it for any other RU-vidr I subscribe to, but it's pretty cool. It's different than going to RU-vid first on the Roku--it take me straight to the videos, like any other "TV" show.. I like it!

Hi Gabriel, Welcome! Great to have you here! I think these are the Xylouris brothers Anthony and Nick from the traditional village of Anogia high in the mountains of Psiloritis I was talking about in my previous email. You should definitively stay in Anogia for a while and intermingle with the shephers who are also musicians over there. Unfortunately I don’t recognize the girl. Cretan music has many similar features with Celtic music. Bagpipes, flutes, fiddles, lutes, drums but has also been influenced by the East. There is even a documentary in English about their family. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A7BvYxAMazE.html

Music speaks one language. As a seasoned traveller Gaberiel you would recognise the Greek traditional music so much similar to Serbo-Croat, Albanian, Arabic, Turkish and then Indian classical music...tells you the common origin of people from that area into the middle east, South eastern Europe, Central Asia and the subcontinent.
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 6 лет назад
Exactly.
@annivali4356
@annivali4356 6 лет назад
Similar music doesn't necessarily refer to similar origin. It is usually more connected to the way different nations have influenced each other culturally throughout their history. The Greek culture was hugely mixed with the Middle-Eastern culture during the Hellenic times. Alexander the Great encouraged taking over different aspects of the cultures of the areas they occupied during that time.
@bluesky2770
@bluesky2770 6 лет назад
@Anni Vali. Alexander the Great respected the cultures and religions of the people of his empire, but did not actively incorporate their linguistic, cultural, political, aspects into Greek culture. In fact, the opposite happened,. People from throughout his empire (some 5,000,000 square miles wide) adopted Hellenic culture voluntarily. Classical Greek/Hellenic philosophy, mathematics, religion, art, ethics, law, and much more remained what they were well into the origin of Christianity, which then attempted to destroy ancient Hellenic culture.
@annivali4356
@annivali4356 6 лет назад
@@bluesky2770 I was talking about music. And the cultures did mix. You can also hear strong influences of the Eastern cultures in Spanish folk and traditional music. I believe that this is mostly connected to the fact that Spain was under the rule of Moors for about eight centuries until 1492 when Fernando and Isabel started ruling. Italian traditional music between Spain and Greece does not have these influences. I'm not trying to argue with you. I just felt that the original comment was not based on knowledge of history but rather on emotions.
@bluesky2770
@bluesky2770 6 лет назад
@anni vali. Thanks for writing back. My comment to you was mainly referring to your statement : "Alexander the Great encouraged taking over different aspects of the cultures of the areas they occupied during that time". Alexander the Great never encouraged other Greeks to alter their culture.

Arch Stanton, No its not comparable with Bavarian German-whatever. Hellas is like italy, it is something uniqe only for those two countries in Europe. Crete is like Sicily. Peloponesse is like southern Italy up to Rome and from North Hellas(Central and up) is like Rome up to North Italy.
@bluesky2770
@bluesky2770 6 лет назад
@anna oikonomou. Anna, Cretan people's history has been part of Greece for thousands of years. Cretans speak Greek, are orthodox Christians like the vast majority of Greeks, and their DNA (Minoan DNA) very close to that of southern Greece (Peloponnese). Therefore, these people are of Greek origin and descent, and it is perfectly normal to say that Cretan music belongs in the greater family of Greek music. See this research paper. www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/08/greeks-really-do-have-near-mythical-origins-ancient-dna-reveals

Blue Sky, "...orthodox christians like vast majority of Greeks", and your point is? It is true what you are saying actually, which is pathetic and sad actually, since Christianity is not a Hellenic/European dogma/entity.
