Arundhati Roy is a world-renowned Indian author and global justice activist. From her celebrated Booker-Prize winning novel The God of Small Things, to her prolific output of writing on topics ranging from climate change to war, the perils of free-market development, and the defense of the poor, Roy's voice has become indispensable to millions seeking a better world. She has been awarded the Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize in 2002, the Sydney Peace Prize in 2004, and the Norman Mailer Prize for Distinguished Writing in 2011.
This talk was presented by Indian Summer Festival in Vancouver on April 1, 2014, at St Andrew's Wesley Church in Vancouver, Canada, with support from the British Columbia Library Association, SFU's Surrey Campus Library, The Georgia Straight, and SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement.

Listening to this in 2020. Sadam Hussain from the Ministry passes by in her readings. The wonderful head of Arundhati Roy. She has constructed the many (current) Indians in our head.

Good precision, such a rarity. At the heart of the fight of David vs Goliath is the value of human. Either we make human a man or worship the non human entities. She hails from my home state kerala, not many global icons from Kerala. Like the genial interviewer, he is contributive.

I m very glad that she is not fearless but strateigic! every breath she takes &every coherent thought while she is awake is going to benifit the humanity! she is the light that sheds light on the darkest corners of capitalism but unlike a candle she is .not stupid enough to make a martyr out of herself,

***** i repeat myself here, please grow up... and also i do not think you understood this comment " no... no...I dont think even your head makes a good foot ball) " :- what i meant here was that if my head can be cut off yours too can be chopped off, but that doesn't serve any purpose... not even as a football... -_- and if you CAN give me "100 times more" please do so, I am here, but please don't waste my time and yours by posting childish threats... if you can, please debate as to why your view is correct as opposed to mine... and maybe by the end of this debate we will both have something worthy to take back and think about...

***** The idea of a "traitor" has been put into your mind by manipulating politicians. She is talking about the facts. It's only fair that the people of kashmir are put before OUR sentiments. Read the history of the Kashmir conflict (read "India since Independence" by Bipin Chandra) and try to imagine yourself living there (it would help you if you see the movie Haider) then think of the solutions. Idea of the 'nation' exists for the sake of people. Put aside your anger for a while and give a chance to other points of view. Also I am talking civilly here as she is, because I want to make a difference.

Why won't Arundhati support tribal leaders contesting parliamentary elections under the AAP banner? I think Soni Sori and Lig Raj as tribal leaders who have lived through persecution from all sides can represent aspirations of their people better than a social analyst with a global fan base. Her arguements such as NGO fication of people's movements ultimately facilitates crony capitalism needs a revision in the light of recent events in Indian politics. I was hoping to hear her put out her position with some more introspection since this is a 3 day old speech. Would love to hear her take on Swaraj.
