In early September, Last Stand Media -- Cog, Matty, Dustin, Dagan, Chris, Ben, Micah, and myself (Colin!) -- convened in Western Pennsylvania for a three hour-long live show all about the best games ever. An awesome time was had by all, but a promise was also made and kept: It was recorded beginning-to-end, and we're very pleased to present it to you today. Mind you, there's much to learn for our next live show (and yes, there will be more), but we had an absolute blast, we know the audience there did too, and we likewise hope you at home enjoy the first of what will become a series of Evenings With.

I played Mass Effect on PC years ago but stopped a few hours into Mass Effect 2 because I had constant technical issues on my PC at the time. His presentation makes me want to buy the collection on console now.

Good choice. Played 2 and 3 when they originally came out, but then replayed them when the Legendary Edition was released earlier this year and they still hold up. Interestingly, ME 1 originally wasn't on Playstation, and it didn't come out on Playstation until after ME2 & 3 were already released. Weird.

One of the things I'd add about SF2 is that you had money on the line. If you lost then you lost your quarter and you always wanted to stretch your quarter out because you only had a few dollars every time you went to the arcade. There was also the time issue because you'd have to wait 5-10 minutes to play after putting your quarter up. Additionally the amount of pressure you had playing was so big because so many people were watching you and you really wanted to show up. Really great times.

Fantastic show! Shame about the audio issues. Sounded like maybe there was a gate that was too happy on the trigger and cutting the audio if it was below a certain point. And a there's a lingering feedback at some points. But just small issues the show was great! I gotta give it to Chris and Halo3, totally agree with all points. I think people voted for Colin, more than they voted for the game... Shout out to Cog, but weird to choose the second best ME game...

I think there are a lot of games where you have to play them when they were released to get the full impact. I played Street Fighter 2 a lot as a kid, but I could see younger viewers not having the same sort of reverence for the game if they didn't grow up on it.

I don't know what's in Dark Souls that Demon's Souls didn't already do. Ok, better level design, but then why not Bloodborne? The argument for Dark Souls appears to be that it's a trailblazer but most of those things were done in Demon's. I did find it telling that when Colin asked why not Demon's Souls, Dustin lost his train of thought however. Anyway, I'm still in the middle of this, good show so far from all of you.

The interconnected world design is pretty important though. It really adds to the exploration and shortcuts. The estus flask as well was a great addition (I know Bloodborne didn't have the mechanic but it still had a much more strict limit on heals which I feel is important for these types of games). Also Dark Souls in general is just more iconic (bosses, areas, and characters). I do agree that Demon's Souls is overlooked as the originator of this sub-genre and that Bloodborne is a better game overall, but I can still see why someone would pick Dark Souls.

Dark souls has the best level design in the series by far. Plus if he is going for influential it was Dark souls that everyone actually played. Og demon souls had no where near the fan base or reach of Dark souls. All that being said I completely get what you are saying about Demon souls starting it all because that game was fucking mind blowing playing when it released. Damn I love souls games!

Dark Souls level design is an absolute master class for the first half of the game and then great for the second half. Bloodborne has great level design the whole way through but never once touches the highs the first half of Dark Souls did.

Okay... you can say it's not a masterpiece or even great, that's understandable. But if you think Breath of the Wild isn't at least a "good" video game when it revolutionized the way developers and us will look at open-world games from now on, then that's wild.

Wow, for the first time, Chris accidentally willed something OUT of existence, since it’s since been announced that Halo 3’s 360 servers are shutting down. I like to think some Microsoft exec was watching this, saw Chris mention the game is still up and getting content, and suddenly realized “Oh crap. Why the hell are we still doing this?” and made a few quick phone calls. Truly the end of an era.

Audio issues aside, this was great. Ben is a great host. Everybody had an enjoyable presentation. Shout out to my boy Dagan for bringing a rap. Put your quarters up. Of course, Colin takes it. Best objective presentation and best choice. Although, Chris has my heart with my favorite game on there and what it’s done for the industry. Crazy that he didn’t even play the music.

Fuck yeah, my boy Dustin bringing Dark Souls. Personally I prefer Bloodborne and Sekiro but it feels good to have some Fromsoftware representation up there. Honestly I think they make the best games right now, nothing else I've played lately has compared to facing Slave Knight Gael or Sword Saint Isshin, or the level and world design of Yharnam, Ashina, and Lordran. Idk, there's just something special about their games and worlds. I can't wait for Elden Ring. Also, as for Colin's pick, SMB 3 > SMW

I also disagree with your premise somewhat, Bloodborne and Sekiro in particular are unique enough in setting and mechanics (both traversal and combat are completely different in Sekiro's case). Elden Ring is trying a very different approach to their level design. Basically, yes they have a formula, but it's a formula I enjoy and they try to push that formula in unique ways.

Doesn't the witcher series has the same kind of consequence tree as mass effect? I only played the 3rd one but i'm almost sure it has it since you can even get different results on the third game if you pick different choices when they ask you to recount your actions from the past in one of the early missions on witcher 3 the wild hunt

This is good shit. Man I love ME2 but STREET FIGHTER 2 was on another level. This game was in my local mall in a shop called Aladdin's castle. I remember being Guile and going on such a hard run beating every challenger that put their quarter up. Eventually there was a crowd around me. Still remember that almost 30 yrs later

Breakable weapons in BOTW are awful. It's an amazing game, but would be so much better without that nonsense.

Wrong. The weapons breaking forces you to constantly change your playstyle, manage resources, use alternative strategies, and sometimes run away when you run out of weapons. Makes for a much more interesting gameplay experience.

I think we search out stories and are found of characters that go through emotional journeys because it’s a primal need as a human. Since the Dawn of time We as humans have always been thrusted into the natural world to be challenged so we can better understand ourselves. This is built into our evolution. So in today’s world we are challenged in many completely different ways. But many of these challenges are not meeting our primal needs of growth so instead we search out movies, shows, games, and books for these cathartic emotions.
