Ron Guidry was such an awesome pitcher! Reggie was Mr. October and a real clutch player. Chris started with the Indians and I was a fan from that time on.
I have to admit I didn't like Guidry when I was a kid. I know he was great, but I was a Don Gullett fan. I guess growing up in the Cold War era, if I liked one guy, then I had to dislike someone else. Guidry was such a great Yankee and even a greater person. He definitely deserved his number retired.
I can tell you the entire roster of the 1977-78 Yankees but, other than a couple of stars, don't know anything about the current team. Also, can you guys tell that English is Ron Guidry's second language? He grew up speaking French in the bayous of Louisiana.
Chris was my fav player! We lived on 161st Walton Ave. We went to all Yankees games. Chris was not underrated! Guidry, Pinella, Nettles, Munson ( God rest his soul) Randolph, Goose, Chambliss and Jackson were a nostalgic team. Believe it. Seriously badass! George Steinbrenner is the best thing that ever happened to the Yankees and let’s NOT forget Billy Martin (God rest them both, too!). I was a young I girl, too but I loved and still love baseball! God Bless The Yankees! Sincerely, Crys, The Song🕊🎶
When Chris Chambliss first came IN 1974, NOBODY liked him because Fritz Peterson had been traded along with Steve Kline, Freddie Bean, and Tom Buskey. Dick Tidrow was 1-3, finished altogether 12-12, Kline went down with arm problems, Peterson was 9-14 for the Tribe, Cecil Upshaw was 1-6 or 1-7, so once he hit he Homerun over Littel, he was accepted, Reggie 3 homeruns in Game 6, and Guidry was 16-7, but once 25-3 untradeable and they forgot about Rudy May and Larry Gura, all you had to do was see their '76 records!
The best eta…WS champs and goat announcers with Bill White, Frank Messer and Rizutto. Nowadays it’s so bad they have a woman announcing. Can’t listen .
Daniel Zanier He's very likable.......even disposition. He was an excellent player.....was very mad when the Yankees traded him.. The Yanks paid dearly for that..Watson only had one good season....Chris played many good seasons with the Braves......
Even disposition is how many of his teammates described him. He never got too up or too down, and almost never complained to umps. The Yanks only traded him because they had to give up something to get Rick Cerone to replace Munson. It should be pointed out that Steinb renner never really appreciated Chris to the degree he should have. He also felt that Chris didn't hit enough homers as a left handed hitter in Yankee Stadium. But that wasn't Chris' game. Chris hit the ball where it was pitched. He could drive in 90-95 runs without having to reach 20-25 homers. He never stepped to pull. He was an all fields hitter.
Brandon asked Reggie point blank were there fights like that in the clubhouse - Reggie failed to mention when Cliff Johnson and Goose Gossage fought each other in the clubhouse, and also when Reggie and Billy North went after each other with Oakland.
A beautiful team... for all its flaws... In addition to the 3 greats above, Roy White (understated like Chambliss, and often overlooked, but a superb ballplayer and a great guy), Thurman R.I.P., Catfish R.I.P., Lyle, Gossage, Randolph, Rivers, Nettles, Figueroa, Torres, Piniella, Tidrow... But at this point in my life, though I can argue why this team was so special, throw stats around and what have you, I realize that it's a question of love... The team you grew up with, you love them like your family, and no other team before or since can ever quite match it. It's not rational, but it is deep
The 76-78 team was the one I grew up with ..and I love them immensely...however...if the 78 yankees met up with the 98 yankees...you figure out the rest
A sign of the times, I still remember as a kid growing up in the Midwest, just in awe of these Yankees. Guidey's 78' season in particular. Waiting for the sports section to see Guidry get to 10-0, 11-0, etc etc. I realize today we know there are better stats to gauge how effective a pitcher is than wins. But to see a guy make it to July without losing, was fun to track!!
No I in team it takes everyone plays together as a team greats and all contribute in different ways to achieve the goal of the world series winners like 29 times amazing Yankees
