HUman greed is widening the gap between the poor and the rich in the US to an alarming level. Part of the US population now lives like in the third world, and that's the result of the ownership culture. What Buffet and Bill are doing is not out of greed. They are grown up men who made their fortune and must find a way to redistribute it in the best possible way. If Gordon Gecko is your hero you've got a lot to learn and unlearn. Good luck!

The ultimate ego-trip! The difference is that a lot of poor kids benefit from that. Imagine you have all the money in the World, as well as prestige. You keep looking for meaning in life (if you are intelligent like these 3 great figures are). You realize you cannot buy peace of mind. But you realize that part of your happiness is a by product of your own work. But that is not enough. In the end you give a huge chunk of your money to charity and create a foundation. Well, who can beat that?and

I'm agreeing with you, read my comment again, I said what has she done besides opening a school in S. Africa??? Nothing I can think of besides giving away cars to her audience (which is not going to change anyone's life significantly). If she's done other good works I'm not aware of them (I rarely, if ever watch her show, I can't stomach daytime talk television with their trivial issues they talk about.) I don't understand how anyone can watch Oprah, The View, Ellen, etc. it's a bunch of crap.

god does not bother with the trifles of man. we are here to see beyond this facade by elevating our consciousness to a level that no longer discerns good or evil in an object but sees beyond to the soul--the way we do when we hear music, or feel the soul of an artist cross space to merge with us.

One of the most beneficial things wealthy philanthropists could do to benefit humanity would be to create a billion dollar prize to anyone who can find a cost effective way to desalinate sea water. (By "cost effective" I mean competitive with the watershed in temperate climates. Also, disposal of waste brine would have to be figured in.) In the future water is going to be more precious than oil.

I am proud of the U.S. for the atmosphere that fosters this kind of success. The people who become successful can then use the money they made when they became successful to help others who are less fortunate if they choose to, and many of them do choose to donate their money for philanthropic purposes. They actually put a lot of thought on how they will spend their money to leave a 'legacy' unlike gov't which just redistributes wealth for political gain. Did Michelle ever think of that????

Check the Attention span of the 'avg' american. Look at the shows that get the ratings. Look at the commercials, look at their main audience. Look at what they try to promote and who they cater to. Benderrr111: You are absolutely correct, this is one of the greatest gift to humanity but the major media will not give it the attention it deserves. If they get the attention, then all the wealthy individuals will be pressured by the public to do the same, and you know some greedy people only want everything for themselves. But Warren, Bill and Melinda Gates are such great role models. I hope they live forever.

It's great that these mega-billionaires are giving back a lot of their wealth for worthy causes. I'd prefer that they do it a bit more quietly and low key. There's a certain holier-than-thou smugness that all 3 of them have that is a bit unsettling. On balance, a good thing though....

If you use your charity donation as tax deduction, are you really giving your money or state's money? What gives you the right to decide where "the tax" money will be spent instead of democraticaly elected politicians who's job is to decide that? How much of the donated money is really donated and how much is spent as "administrative and/or operational expenses"

radix3d Yeah thanks mr Buffet for investing in Coca Cola and Exon. Coke, who partly responsible for the obesity epidemic n America, and Exon a major oil company who is holding back progress in alternative fuels. Just because they are painting an image of philanthropy, doesn't mean they are. Bill Gates/microsoft has wiped out all kinds of perfectly good competition in the market you know. You don't become the two richest people in the world by spreading wealth.

ottawadrummer Coke is not responsible for obesity PEOPLE are responsible for themselves. Microsoft has allowed countless businesses to increase their productivity substantially, created the first software company that employees thousands and an industry that employees millions, and in fact paved the way for many companies like Facebook. Technology is an extremely competitive industry by nature. Don't reproduce the world has enough stupid people.

radix3d Oh ya sure, coke's hands are just clean aren't they. So if he invested into conglomerate tobacco, would you have the same excuse for cancer patients? Warren Buffet doesn't care about people, he cares about his legacy. If MS hadn't of done it, someone else would've. They haven't released a decent product since XP. If they didn't have a such a firm grip on the drivers, Linux would easily be the most used OS. They've monopolized the market so all the hardware has to pass through them.

ottawadrummer Just using your Linux logic with cigarette companies, if they didn't smoke the cigarettes from the companies Buffett has invested in, then someone else would be selling cigarettes. You still live in the 90's people use tablets now Microsoft has serious competition. I guess Google is a monopoly, Apple is a monopoly, no i just think you're dumb. You have to be a socialist... totally playing the "I'm a victim" belief system instead of personal responsibility.
