2013 Seeing Eye graduates, Mollie and Jeffery, share their stories about partnering with their Seeing Eye dogs. During the filming, Mollie was training with her second Seeing Eye dog - a yellow Lab named Newton, while Jeffery trained with his first Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Gadget. Their genuine stories are heart-warming and illustrate how The Seeing Eye's mission is changing lives throughout North America; and as a supporter of The Seeing Eye, you are part of that success.
Be sure to stick around for the end of the video for a funny filming outtake!
Produced and Directed by Ryan Hartigan.
The following text describes the content of a few silent areas of the film for those using screen reading software:
While Mollie and Jeffery are speaking, shots of Mollie working in town with her yellow Lab, Newton, and Jeffery working with his German shepherd, Gadget, are shown, including various intersection crossings, an unplanned traffic check, sidewalk travel and work inside of a shopping mall.
The credit slides at the end read, in order, as follows:
From Mollie and Newton, Jeffery and Gadget and the entire Seeing Eye family, Thank you.
Special thanks to: Mollie Hernandez and her Seeing Eye dog, Newton. A funny outtake clip shows Newton lovingly trying to climb onto Mollie's lap after the end of our interview with her. Mollie jokingly says "edit" with a big smile on her face as she settles Newton.
And special thanks to Jeffery Lucas and his Seeing Eye dog, Gadget. A touching clip shows Jeffery and Gadget in a Seeing Eye van together on one of their last trips of class. Jeffery is smiling and hugging Gadget while Gadget gives him a quick kiss and then looks into the camera.
The final slide shows The Seeing Eye's logo and lists our web address, www.SeeingEye.org.

Wonderful! I only just heard about this organization last year when my Dad passed away and he asked that people donate to them. My Dad wasn't seeing impaired but he felt like this was such a great organization and he was right. I now know how much it helps people and their families. Thanks for sharing two graduates stories!

There was a lady in my neighborhood that used a cane first and then got a dog and i would see her all the time walking taking her kids to school etc. One day it was raining a bit hard and she had her dog but she walked straight into a pole. And i was saw another girl come up to see if she was ok and then walked with her. I dont think she had an umbrella. But other than that there was never a problem. I felt bad when i saw that.

Do those dogs enjoy being seeing-eye-dogs? Would they maybe not prefer acting like regular dogs? My dad is training one and he's just a puppy, so it's hard to imagine he'd ever become so obediant. And I get its for a good cause, but it looks more like the dogs are nothing more then mere tools to be used, as opposed to actual living beings.

Matthew Barr they don't just take any dogs. Dogs who don't want to do it they pay attention they call "reservice" them whether be becoming a regular pet or doing a different career. Dogs love obedience. They crave a schedule they've done studies. Guide dogs have to have a certain temperament and reach certain obedience.

Matthew Barr The dog isn't always working, it has it's responsibilities helping it's handler get around but come around the end of the day it's a normal family dog playing and sleeping. The dog isn't a mere tool to them it's being a help with getting around safely and being a loving house pet as well.

As a CCDPT dog trainer and as a blind guide dog user, I can tell you that the evidence points to exactly the opposite. Saying that a dog shouldn’t guide us is like saying your child would be happier without being educated so let’s just leave them alone. Knowledge is a good thing for both kids and dogs. Did you know that we research dogs by training them to lie quietly in an MRI machine and then mapping their brains? Their emotional centers correspond similarly to humans. Dogs love to be active and engaged and their absolute worst fear is to be left alone. Most pet dogs are home all day without stimulation. Many of dogs behavior problems come from unendurable boredom and loneliness. I’ve trained dogs all my life (I’m in my sixties) and guide dogs are generally the most fulfilled and content dogs out there. They love love love their jobs. Just as a human would. There are dogs who don’t have the right personality or the intelligence for this work. Guide dogs are screened heavily for aptitude and enjoyment for their work. These are generally dogs who would be very unhappy being a couch potato. You can’t force a dog to be a good guide dog. He HAS to love it. Otherwise he would wash out for sure. My guide dog needs tons of activity, challenges and connects deeply with me. He would be terrible unfulfilled if left at home all day. He doesn’t have the personality for that. He plays and competes recreationally, in frisbee, agility, dock diving and rally and he loves his sports. But what he really loves is to be doing something with me. Whether he is catching a frisbee or lying quietly beside me on a bus or in a restaurant, he is happy. Believe me, Ive worked with tons of badly behaved pet dogs and they are certainly LESS happy being uneducated and marginalized.
