When I began my photography career, I didn’t study photography and I didn’t attend a photography school or had any formal education as a photographer, which means I’m self-taught like many of you aspiring photographers.
I hope you enjoyed my tips on how to become a photographer.
All best,
Frederik Trovatten

Around 19 minutes..I shoot street in NYC,big ole full frame camera, with a zoom. Not only do I usually get permission,i more than often have people asking me to be shot.I went to Harlem, and I am done shooting for the day, went into the subway, waiting for the train to come home. All of a sudden,a young, cute woman asks me,"are you a photographer?".I said yes,I do some shooting here and there, and she asks me,"So are you going to take my picture or what?"..I said yes ma'am and told her to just let go and play with the camera, and she did.We had like 10 seconds of fun, everyone right there, but we were in OUR moments. There's a male up here, who i see in the same area,at random, and he sees me and immediately,we're like in some studio, and he makes me work hard, just giving me expressions that bring out his chiseled features.Last time he told me,to take those pictures and publish them, because he wants to see them one day,in the media...For me,that's what drives me,the moment, the courage to be free, because we might not see one another again, that building/store might not be there next week,etc,etc..

Very nice conversation, Frederik, I liked this video very much. I feel like you - I am much more comfortable interacting with people than not. It gives its own version of truth and it doesn’t leave you feeling like you were stealing something. Your comment about the challenge of making street photos with people “at home” rings very true - there’s no obvious frame for your behavior when people can’t think of you in the role as a guest eager to learn.

I honestly think building the courage to approach people publicly, to ask them to take a picture is really important as a photographer. Especially a street/portrait photographer. It teaches you how to interact with your subjects, especially those that receives little to none compensation for posing and goes a long way in the career. Because whether you do fashion, wedding or street/portrait photography. The way you treat your subject is crazily important. I'm so glad you touched on the importance of interacting with your subject. And obviously that you encouraged it from your first few videos. It has taught me a valuable lesson.

I have rarely seen anyone express his opinion so strongly with his own words. When it comes to "street photography", that's my favorite. I like his style, how he makes his pictures. But even more important ... You can see in each of his videos how much fun he has in taking pictures. There is passion in his way to take pictures. Without knowing it, he's an inspiration. This video covers a lot of ideas around photography, in particular street, which is my favorite. Glad not too much time was devoted to gear as it is usually not the limiting factor for most photographers. When I am on the street I try not to get wrapped up in my own head about what, why or how of taking photos and focus on just seeing as much as I can around me, anticipating and being ready to click the shutter. I don't second guess myself about what happened moments ago. All the technical things you learn over time, and the intention of your vision, will be in play without much conscious thought in the moment. Frederick really conveyed the excitement of getting the special image that rises above others. Whether you realize it as you are taking the photo, or days later when you are working on post processing, the special photos, are the fuel that drives most people forward.

Loved listening to your story Frederik! It really was ‘an honest talk’ with warts and all. It takes a lot of courage to show one of your favourite photos and then show us how the original unedited photo so-so photo :) The other thing I could relate to was your point about interacting with people before taking their photo rather than a sneaky capture. From my own experience it does get your heart pumping to try and engage with an absolute stranger, sometimes in a muddled attempt at their foreign language, but I’ve found that those photos have come to have more meaning to me than a grabbed shot. Thanks again.

I keep coming back to this video. It's almost exactly the way i feel about "street photography". Somehow i think this whole concept of being either sneaky or extremely in your face is completely an ahole way of going about it. Photography for me is supposed to be an enjoyable, social process. I used think whether this fits one genre or not. In the end, it's your photography. Just go out there and do what you feel like. I feel Purists almost never create something new. Thank you for putting me at ease every now and again. Cheers mate. Love your videos 🥰

I like candid shots. Call it sneaky if you want, but I like to take photos when they are just being natural. Some of my best photos came about that way. If they know you are taking a photo they perhaps drop that cigarette, set down that beer, smile when they just had a pensive look on their face as though they are mulling over a problem, etc.

The part where you mentioned about asking strangers for a portrait doesn't ruin the moment but could lead to new moments was definitely eye-opening. It's a good perspective to have as I haven't done that at all yet as I prefer to be that fly on the wall and take candid shots to capture "real moments". Also been doing a project 366 this year and I agree with what you said about when having a day with a bad photo but you really can't do anything about it and you still need to post it and just learn from it. Great interview! Love your content too!

Great video, really makes you think about what you’re doing. There’s no right or wrong in Street Photography, well to a point that is. The definition of Street Photography is an Unmediated Encounter that doesn’t have to include people yet if you go on some groups on Facebook they insist on it, those I leave well alone.

I think the time limit for concert photographers is actually more in place for the crowd. I've been at some concerts with photographers there for the entire show, and it kind of changes the dynamic. Especially if it's active like a mosh pit, it can put a damper on things to have someone with expensive equipment there who you need to avoid. Another time I remember being at an intimate solo singer/songwriter performance where a person was right in the front with a big old DSLR distracting us from the performer

Really good interview, Fredrick I love your passion and it's almost like listening to myself. We are often are own worst critics which is OK in small doses as it stops you getting comfortable and always moving forward trying to improve and perfect what it is we do.... I shoot in a smallish City in South Australia called Adelaide. It is challenging to keep finding new and interesting shots compared to say the likes of Melbourne, Sydney or any other major cities in the world. But it's those challenges that have helped me grow as you really need to think creatively all of the time to minimise the repetition and rut you could easily fall into. So I walk my city at all different times of the day/night and year because opportunities will present themselves like light pools only being there for a certain time of day or time of the year because the buildings and angle of the sun etc. People often say to me wow you make Adelaide look so interesting and beautiful. I don't do anything special I just really take the time to stop and look to see the beauty we just take fore granted... Keep up the good work....I always enjoy your channel. Cheers @giant_evertonian

Haha. I'm from Esbjerg, Denmark and I've had a tough time finding inspiration taking the photos I find interesting in and around Esbjerg. As you suggest I actually started focusing more on minimalism and light/shadow, but I still find it difficult. The other thing is the people of Esbjerg seem to be very aware of photographers/people with cameras. I've been photographing in a lot of bigger and smaller cities in Denmark, and I've never experienced as many people staring as in Esbjerg. It makes it really difficult to get people walking naturally in your frame.

Interesting! I know there's two different ways to do street photography...one is the candid approach while the other is when you ask a stranger on the street if they would mind having their photo taken... I lean more towards the candid version, myself. The legalities are different (obviously!!) But getting a unexpected facial expression from the subject (person) is what really makes the photo. When you ask for permission to take the photographs, u most often find the same results.... A happy smiling face looking at the camera... Rather boring I'd say!! To catch someone with a facial expression that tells what he/she is doing unexpectedly is truly what street photography is all about, isn't it??

I usually have problems with calling myself a street photographer, so I cheat and call myself an urban photographer instead. What I have a problem with, I think, is that while it's perfectly fine to take pictures in public places, there's a boundary where if I post a picture of someone on my instagram, I'm kind of commoditizing that person. I don't know. That's why I cheat by calling myself something else entirely. 😁

Thanks for the time! I'd love to interview you for the first season of my podcast!! It's based on interviewing creative people in a fun way. Cant say much more here. But would love to have a convo if you have the time!

great video! really inspiring. your "everyday challenge" reminded me of an an app I saw some time ago that has different challenges and contests among photographers. does anyone know an app like that?

Thanks a lot! I’ve heard about apps like that. But I just posted it on IG every day. Didn’t need much more :)

@@FTrovatten yeah, I know! that's all you really need. But I thought an app like that could help with finding specific topics to make a series of. just a thought though

I’m new to photography but I’d rather interact with someone then take the picture. Then just shoot and run . Dope video subbed 💯 and the offspring are bozos for that 😂

If you want to make a real difference maybe consider being a photo journalist in a war zone; I think a guy like you could handle it. cheers 👍👍
