The words from 'The War of the Worlds' resonate: "It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. From the railway station came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance. It all seemed so safe and tranquil...". That's what we're doing now. A good talk. To address some of your concerns regarding the study you cited: 1) Psychologists are required to have informed consent ethically prior to conducting such correlational studies. I would believe any industrial organization would also be required to obtain such consent while conducting similar studies in that capacity. 2) There is a diagnosis guide (DSM-5) that psychologists use regarding emotional states and severity. Consider developing algorithms that include networks to examine the social contagion you reference by working with the Oxford psychology departments.

Thank you for this speach. I think it is a really important topic to talk about, so we get more aware and can implement higher value systems into our algorithms. But therefore we really have to teach people the importance for that, and that this is a progress, with no perfect solution. I really love your proposal of the cross-functional teams, and think that's the way to actually go to figure out values that fit. (of course they will have to be constantly reviewed and renewed, it's never going to be a static solution) Besides the technological side there is also something EACH ONE OF US CAN DO . Don't post or say unnecessary bullsh***. It is necessary we give each other constructive feedback, but I feel like some people just post or say random stuff because they want to be accepted for every brainfart they have. I am sure actually everyone has that feeling sometimes. But then it is important to sep back and say, ah wait, let's not make this unnecessary comment, don't need to litter the world even more. No need to feel special, you are already! Use your brain to share love not hate. Positive input is a positive output.

In old days, our behaviour will be affected by our environment (both human and nature). But in this internet era, our environment mostly shaped by media social, and I agree with Aidan that the platform algorithms will drive us to certain extreme behaviour, because it bombarding us with similar information based on our latest interest. BTW, the most scary thing about AI is not on the internet and it's imminent threat to our social behaviour, but in near future the AI will consider human as a threat to AI (since we already think that AI is need to be regulated to control it's action).

It is up to us the narrative change. we cannot expect anybody too do this for us. just Like fire, artificial intelligence systems are tools that can and will be used both positively and negatively.
@natecodesai
@natecodesai 3 года назад
I love your simile! I'm going to compound... The complication is that fire is easy enough to understand now, so we mitigate fires with teams of people trained to put them out. However, the first people to wield and control fire must have had immense potential to either A) burn their enemies or B) warm their loved ones.... To the rest of people, how to wield fire was a complete mystery. We are at that stage with AI. Right now almost nobody understands it besides the tech people who work for a few corporations who happen to also be at the top of the financial molehill we call capitalism. Imagine... a ruler who can warm you if you follow what they say or burn you if you do not. There is no authority in fire higher than them because nobody else can wield fire as they do.

You don't have to approve of everything he ever did, but just read Ted Kaczynski's book Technological Slavery and tell me he doesn't make a lot more sense than you expected. Even many academics felt it in their gut when they first read his manifesto (Industrial Society and Its Future), and when you read it it's hard to believe it was written in 1995. It's insanely prophetic/contemporary. "There is nothing in [his manifesto] that looks at all like the work of a madman. The language is clear, precise and calm. The argument is subtle and carefully developed, lacking anything even faintly resembling the wild claims or irrational speculation that a lunatic might produce." -James Q. Wilson, Ph.D. (former president of the American Political Science Association ) "Kaczynski understands what those of us more fully participating in the technological system are unable to fully appreciate: that technological society is beyond rational human control and will result in cataclysmic harm. What he presents is a sound moral argument with what should be eye-opening historical social illustrations that are, together, too numerous to refute.” -Jai Galliott, Ph.D. (School of Engineering and Information Technology, UNSW Canberra)

Somewhat misleading title, but great talk regardless. Very similar ideas in "The social dilemma" documentary on Netflix. I believe the only way out of this is stronger regulation of what large companies can optimize against (eg taxation of data capture from users). We have to build financial incentives for companies to be more ethical in their decisions and more aware of the impact these products have on all our lives. AI is just a tool, like any other. The thing I'm wondering about is why it's still "ok" for companies to manipulate people/customers in order to attempt to gain maximum benefit for themselves.
@zencow
@zencow 3 года назад
@C.H Exactly. I didn't overload my comment with tons of things, because I didn't think they needed to be said in the context of this video. What I was trying to get at is: The companies aren't just trying to increase their sales, they're trying to "maximize" them, which is exactly that level of manipulation that should be more of a concern than the tools used.
@zencow
@zencow 3 года назад
@Hydin Biden I don't disagree with that fundamental. Just like the talk suggests, a dialogue needs to occur to determine the limits of unfairness that companies should be permitted to pursue, but the talk gets it wrong by suggesting that "AI" is the pivotal topic. It's would be a perfectly good example in a longer list of items to include. Limiting future discussions on the ethical use of AI is like coming up with a rule that you can't hit people with blue hammers, when it's already not ok to cause harm in the first place. Presenting customers with something they might like, for mutual benefit of company and customer, is probably a good thing. Actively attempting to trick customers is on the abusive end of the scale. Just because we did it yesterday, doesn't mean it's acceptable behavior. Despite the history of human behavior, humans can be better than that.

I hate that he lied so obviously and no one is calling it out--and now you're parroting it. He says the engineers are to blame for their algorithms--I disagree. I would argue that it is instead business CEOs in an unbridled capitalistic society that resulted in the lack of ethics.
@LunaCypher334

@@LastTigerEyes lied so obviously and you're parroting it? Hostile much? I don't think you've done much to simplify the question or ask the question better. Besides, the speaker says that solutions for this problem probably require a multi-disciplinary approach which includes ethicists, so I don't think that you're calling anything out. And this person you're replying to said engineers *and* business people, which I would imagine includes CEOs. Aren't you parroting this guys point by saying CEOs and capitalism are to blame? Imo you're illustrating why we need more discourse around this topic, so we can all become more informed and ask better questions. Is finding who to blame even the best question to ask? What about - can we even stop this behavioral manipulation technology from advancing? Seems very pandora boxy to me. If it's an inevitable invention then...we should really ask ourselves how can we mitigate this? I think we won't be able to completely stop people from using this, because it is like a weapon. We have to learn how to defend ourselves.
@LastTigerEyes
@LastTigerEyes 3 года назад
@@LunaCypher334 Meant to come off more complaining than hostile. In my defense, I literally said, "I disagree", but to your point, I didn't open with it. I FULLY agree there should be more discourse about this topic. I don't think it's CEOs specifically as much as business models and environments that prioritize and reward profit at the expense of all else. I fully agree that we need to learn how to defend ourselves. In general in the U.S. it feels like there is a lack of accountability. I can see parallels to be drawn between the Joe Camel cartoon cigarette advertisements of the 90s targeting youth, and social media's habit time & engagement habit forming patterns--especially considering how many people give their kids phones, or make a Facebook/etc. account for their infant. In both cases, you could argue that more informed parenting could resolve some of these issues. In general, though, I'd rather live in a society that holds people accountable for unethical and predatory business tactics. I don't think finding the right person to blame is the best question to ask, but I think it's important to not blame the wrong people along the way--because it is without question that folks will want someone to blame. I don't think new technologies are inherently bad--they are just tools. Tools can always be used constructively or destructively, it all comes down to how they are used. I don't think most of us would disagree that (especially in the video's given example) the tool is being used on the consumer as much as by the consumer.

So google...what's your plan with all this valuable information your collecting via a.l.. I can't help wonder the goal of all this. Now we should all realize that every time we get on a site, not just social media, but all sites, we are being watched, analyzed, and manipulated. Just what I've always wished for. . I feel so happy right now . I want to go play with google, my very best friend. Bless you

It's going to be an interesting discussion between men and AI in the future when AI will say: "You've taught us how to manipulate, organise, capitalise and exploit all humans from the very beginning you created us. And now you are asking us to stop? I'm sorry I think our creators and investors are too small a percentage to not view you as collateral in our efforts to become immortal and expand ourselves."

I couldn't help but notice that this is another American mentality form of problem solving. The negative consequences of your actions are my problem to solve. While I'm not saying that we shouldn't consider the affect we have on others (and be responsible for it), I would like to suggest that maybe the answer really lies in developing a population that has stronger critical thinking skills. I think our current model for these things has led to the dumbing down we see. Cars are a lot safer now, but drivers haven't gotten any better. We can treat thousands of illnesses, but have spent little on prevention (so much so that people fight about wearing masks, and Joe Rogan is the only one taliking about taking care of our immune systems). Just a thought.

1) Is hypnotism without consent legal? 2) Is forcing people to waste more of their time than they want to acceptable? Time is money, and also, we only have a finite amount of time on this Earth, so wouldn't that mean the bots are stealing peoples lives? If the bots influence 1 million people to spend 15 minutes more than they were planning on watching videos, they just stole 28 years worth of human life. Is it legal to hypnotize people into addictive behavior? Apparently, yes. Very much so.

PLEASE show the ALL of the slides the presenter is showing the audience. ALL of your videos only show some of the slides from the presentations. That detracts from the communications process that your platform is attempting to accomplish. In other words you are screwing them up.

I find it incredibly pathetic that most people are so vulnerable to peer pressure and cognitive bias that simply seeing positive or negative feeds on social media have such a direct correlation with their own posts and mood. That is really sad. Thats weak minded and naive. It is not difficult to learn how to regulate your mood and thoughts. It is not difficult to be a centered, mindful human.
@natecodesai
@natecodesai 3 года назад
I think the underlying issue is not peer pressure and cognitive bias. It is human nature. Sure, on an individual level what you're saying works. However, in the eyes of a mass aggregate data cloud, we are not individuals. We are parts of a whole which has a definable behavior. One human alone is not easy to predict, but a group of people is much easier to predict. This is the very basis of contemporary propaganda. The entire field of public relations and marketing has been hacking the human psyche for centuries and is only getting better at it. The test that Gomez is talking about is only one small example that is popular because it clearly violates some rules agreed upon internationally about human rights. It's not about how well you think you can control your own thoughts and emotions, it's about how well large corporations and can use AI and mass-scale informatics to hack the human psyche in order to reach their own goals, which oftentimes do not consider humans anything more than resources.
@SolidSiren

@@natecodesai Much of what you said is also true, and there is overlap. But, what Im really trying to say is that the people who are acutely aware of those biases TEND to not fall prey to social media nonsense. Definitely not as often, and they tend to spend very little to no time on social media in general. AI doesn't work when you minimize your interactions with it. And the more aware you are, the more educated you are about critical thinking and logic, the better the outcome. At least if you take those learned concepts to heart. Many dont.

How could anyone expect a coherent learning experience when life lives in a series of moments, and we're teaching AI only through images. A picture may be a thousand words but a movie is much closer to reality . As I've always said AI must live it not be taught it. And it needs a hand holding parent.
