No stranger to what makes farming successful, Clara Coleman has a clear plan for a new collaborative farming model that responds to today's particular challenges and embraces entrepreneurial diversification. She calls this the ARC Farming Project-Agrarian Resource Collaborative Farming-and she's on the path to making it a reality.
Clara is the daughter of renowned farming pioneer Eliot Coleman. She is a second-generation organic farmer, consultant, writer, and speaker on sustainable four-season farming. In 2008 Clara created Divide Creek Farm, an organic, intensively-managed, two-acre, four-season vegetable farm in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. She produced year-round vegetable crops under harsh winter conditions using unheated and minimally heated moveable high tunnels and greenhouses. Clara is now focused on building the ARC Farming Project, consulting, writing a book on four-season farming for the next generation, family farm grant projects with land trusts, and promoting the work of both Slow Tools and Farm Hack to further the collaboration between farmers, engineers, and makers of innovative tools. She participates in farming workshops and speaking engagements nationwide as a means to inspire and encourage the next generation of farmers. Clara lives in Portland, Maine, with her two sons.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Just finished reading "This Life is in Your Hands" by Melissa Coleman (Clara's sister). Excellent autobiography about her family's difficult life growing up on their organic farm. Highly recommend! I admire this family so much.

Elliot Coleman is a hero, a legend. This is a lot like what some ecovillages are doing, but on a much grander scale. Many experts have said that going back to small organic farms and backyard gardens is the only way. I'm no expert, but I believe this whole heatedly. I hope this model takes off. Farmers should be the rockstars of the next generation.

I do believe this would be a great experiment . But, and there is always a but, industrial agricultural is a powerful force. Backed by both big business and a strong corrupt government lobby. Maybe just maybe this is the true problem. Best to deal directly with the problem that to find a way around it.

I’ve tried and wondered why it’s so hard to make a profit on farming while following ethics. It’s next to impossible. Then I realized this is the core of centuries of policy and governance debate, the mercantilist-capitalist exploitation of the basic human life existence such as farming and way of rural living. So why is it so hard? It’s has been calculated into our economic model to depress it.... while promoting level capable market economy.

Thank you so much for this! And, i am wondering how/if bio diversity and restoration of natural systems plays role in your model?

whole plan hinges on the trust between the parties involved in such a venture. also depends on how well the different personalities can work together.
@SoberOKMoments
@SoberOKMoments Год назад
Yes, but like-minded people can usually work things out and to even enter a venture like this one would have to like and embrace the concept. So everyone involved would at least begin on pretty much on the same page.

We spent over 40k on equipment, greenhouse, hoop houses over the last 2 years. In May I became so exhausted that the weeds took over our farm. With only two acres to farm this coming year I will leave nearly half under a cover crop, as I haven't the energy to cultivate all of it. I would gladly loan out my equipment, share the green house and 'donate ' my land to some one, anyone, who wanted to use it. Beats letting the two wheel tractor and the land sit idle. So, yes, it could be done right here in Eastern TN.

jthepickle7 Anyone??? Ok. I'm otw! Lol. Almost fo real though. I'm homeless near Los Angeles. Sitting in a dumpster enclosure nabbing wifi from the Doctors office. I have been wanting to start farming using others people's land Curtis Stone style. The setup here it just sounds amazing and very similar to visions I have had. Only,...I'm still just a homeless schmuck, sitting in a dumpster. If something doesn't happen soon.....hold that plot😉

Sharing a distribution point and equipment is a great idea for making small-scale farming more viable. It would have been nice to get more details on the distribution in the model and what sets it apart from other communes. It sounds like the weakest link in the chain is monogamy. Maybe the families shouldn't just share equipment.
@nancysutton7891
@nancysutton7891 6 лет назад
Who says it's a commune? The farmers can live in their own homes and 'drive to work!!' They don't each need a 'personal' suite of farm and processing equipment. Sounds like a great idea. IF they can cooperate instead of doing it the 'American Way' of competing with one another.

Aero farms can fit a 260 acre farm inside a warehouse 1/40th that size. while using 95% less water, zero soil, and no pesticides......farming flat in soil vs vertically with Aero or Hydro is no competition at all.

hydroponics is the future of food production no need of soil for farming
@Hayden734
@Hayden734 3 года назад
Paul Gautchi has the best soil in the world. Hydroponics will never be able to match the magic that goes on in fertile mulched/covered soil full of worms and life,(like the forest floor) however I just purchased the revolution food system by James Fry, it's interesting it's kind of like a ebb and flow hydroponic soil hybrid system aimed at increasing the biology in the grow media. I understand your point because I I am interested in Hydroponics also but seriously check out back to Eden gardening by Paul gautschi , there's nothing to sell he's just has great videos on RU-vid from the channel l2survive. Don't till, just cover your soil with a sheet of cardboard and shredded leaves and then wood chips on top, in about a year you will have some of the most fertile soil around and no weeds, it'll only get better with time as the worms come up and eat the dead grass, eventually through the cardboard and start turning those shredded leaves into vermicompost which is highly anti pathogenic and fertile, grow on brother!

Maybe so....but,....are you eating at McDonald's restaurants still? Do you have any: arthritis, gout, high blood pressure, cancer, bad teeth, poor digestion,...memory losses or anyone in your family have them...you don't need to answer....the answer is obviously - YES, YES and YES! We'r NOT here to become "millionaires" by exploiting others work,....well "some people are"...but the Meek Shall inherit the Earth....not billionaires and millionaires who exploit...and give nothing back.
@jefffoster7365
@jefffoster7365 4 года назад
Not sure how a simple observation got twisted into you’re still eating at McD’s and your life is a wreck!?? I had exactly the same thought, that this is a rerun of small village life and farm cooperatives. I hope it works for them. Unfortunately, all the human relation issues that left trail of carnage in her familial relations all exist in any cooperative effort. They will now have 10-12 families in one collective relationship that will need to work together. Hopefully it will survive families come big and going from co-op.

This is good..but I have a better business model where is land expenditures will not be incurred except the base farm. Let's say our indoor farming business is running in a rural area. You can ask all the local farmers(big or small) around the location of the business to collaborate with you and grow the required crop that you tell them. You will also be giving the local farmers a small discount for purchase and setup of the indoor farm. Inorder to involve the local farmers , they will first have to attend a 2 month training in the base farm. Though the indoor farm in my plan, we also incorporate aquaponic culture and CRAS(closed recirculation systems) This project will be running in North India as the farmers are underpaid , lack the skills and knowledge about these innovative methods of farming. The farmers are underpaid as the distributors pay only 10% of the value of the goods to the farmers.

Not a whole lot of details on how this is actually supposed to work. You spent about 1 minute talking about your actual idea and the rest with mushy gush about your life story. Sorry, but how are you supposed to sell your audience on an idea if we have no idea what it is or how it is supposed to work/be better than other models.

So....Like Arnold says...."I'll be Back"...and she will as VC's and others jump into the money pool. We need big money now to grow this quickly and strongly. The payback is short...the work hard...the lifestyle worth wild.
