One of my favorite window managers is Openbox. And one of the best Linux distributions that features Openbox is Mabox Linux. A few days ago, Mabox released a new version that includes some interesting customizations and apps, including one of the coolest color scheme changing scripts that I've ever seen.

Thanks for the review, DT :) Colorizer is currently a beta, released to introduce it to a larger audience. Version 1.0 will be released with the next major release of the Mabox Istredd, planned for 22.10.

Hey DT, I know this is an older video but I just wanted to let you know that I just installed Mabox 24.05 in Virt-Manager and I am loving it. It's been years since I've run any kind of Arch based distro because of all the crap I went thru with Manjaro but, Mabox is so beautiful, functional and customizable, it just might become my daily drivers soon. Hi DT! You almost have found the best feature of Colorizer, when you changed wallpaper. This change of theme was definitely worth more playing to present few wallpapers and according theme changes.

I do have Archcraft on one of my mini pcs. It gave me a few ideas for my Arco build (my closest to a Linux daily driver). For those who want to fiddle with vanilla Arch or Arco, some items I use for a nice minimal, but beautiful open desktop are polybar, jgmenu, albert (insert your personal favorite launcher. I just like the aesthetic for albert), variety, lxsession, dunst for notifications, and cairo-dock (plank is another good option). I used to use conky, but mostly used it for the clock and a couple meters. the mem and cpu on my polybar and clock from variety all cover my needs.

I used MaBox for about 6 months and loved it. Didn't quit for any other reason other than I like to hop around every 4 to 6 months and try something different. Will probably install it permanently on one of my machines at some point. Truly a fantastic distro, it really got me hooked on minimalist window manager setups. After using MaBox for a time I tried to switch to KDE and quickly moved to i3 and XFCE because KDE feels so heavy and clunky once you get used to a WM.

One thing you didn't go into but people should know about is the set of preconfigured themes MaBox offers. There are a few, including a gruvbox, cyberpunk, Windows 9x type theme, dracula, nordic and I think a few others. They are really cool, extremely well-done and a big selling point for people who like to change themes a lot. You have a few really cool ones out of the box and you can make more of your own.

Hey man, I have question. I struggle to install mabox on an rtx3070 system. The boot from an usb stick stopes at „reached target Graphical interface“ it works fine with an old ati card but if I change the gpu after installation the system won’t start. Do you have experience in that case?

I have used it only for a couple of days now but it is really cool, I think I will use it as my main distro for a while. Only 1 problem that I have found is the sound volume setting it won't stay where I set it and each time I switch apps it goes to full volume. More investigation required I guess.

It would be nice if you could tell us how up to date a package is. Sure I can check myself the latest version but what if I watch this Video at a later point and don't know what version the newest was by the time you recorded. Just if it is the newest version, close to the newest or quite old. It would help to determine how current the apps are. Love your Videos

I haven't been watching a whole lot of RU-vid lately. I've been hanging around on Twitch watching some great musicians showing off their talents. But anyway... As of yesterday, I believe Firefox 104.0 was the latest release. But other than that, looks like a pretty clean distro. Not a huge Manjaro user. I'm more into ArcoLinux but Arch is Arch. Since it's Arch. it's looking pretty great.

One of the things I noticed about Mabox that I have enjoyed so far, is how much it melds the best parts of Manjaro, and fixing some of their problems, and adding some of the openbox elements from Crunchbang!# Linux ... it's quick on my old Thinkpad T430, and after I repair my x200, it's likely going to be installed on there as well.. I think Mabox is a great daily driver for a seasoned Linux user, but until the Repo/update issues with Manjaro get resolved, I worry that cloud will hang over this very well put together distro

I ran Manjaro for close to a year awhile back and loved it, until I started having some issues after an update and encountered the flippant and almost insulting responses from devs that many have talked about. I really want a lighter distro for my old Thinkpad T500 (currently running Linux Mint but Cinnamon seems a little heavy for it) and hoping Mabox is far enough removed from Manjaro to not have to worry about some of those issues. What's the latest on Manjaro's issues?

Did you just ignore like 20 of build in good looking complete ui redesign-themes ? Also this distro is bugged to s. By default it lunches in 1024x768 and it does not see any other display mode, xrandr sees only this one too trying to manualy add a useful mode like 1080p results in some strange gamma error. Not recommended.

xrandr will only offer resolutions that are supported by your video driver. So try another driver in your VM. In Virt-Manager, I always use the Virtio driver.

@@DistroTube i ran it on actual hardware. I did test proprietary and open source drivers just to be sure, both forced 1024x768. If i remember correctly some other youtuber also had some resolution issues with that distro. // apparently it works here too if i run it of virtual box, not sure if id count that as a plus or not xD

Well it probably isn't openbox but whatever else is going on in the base system... Or, do you have a compositor running? I find that some compositing effects don't play nice with certain window managers.

I'm not a fan of gtk desktops, partly because its from the gnome project, which is from the gnome foundation, and the other reason is it really bugs me how it renders windows, you can see it at 15:10 when he open the mabox control center, the window decoration gets rendered first and then the contents of the window get rendered later, its looks very unpolished.

BTW I use EndeavourOS, it's far better than the official Arch Installer script at this point. I don't care if you use Manjaro, BTW. But they are slipping and getting called out more than ever, especially since a major project lead left it.

It looks nice (although this is a bloated Openbox session - 450 Mb memory footprint is just too much for it). The real problem though is it's based of Manjaro, so Htop at the end of the video shows systemd running in all its infamy.

Mabox is pretty decent, its support for wireless is the best I have encountered, especially mobile phone pairing. I like PAMAC too. That said, I have found myself trouble shooting the same kind of niggley bugs, I have found in Manjaro proper (which I used for 3.5 years before moving on the Arch). In first 7 days post install had problems with NTFS USB keys not being recognized, browsers occasionally locking up or not responding, Calibre crashing on and off, sudden screen brightness issues, etc. All on machine that worked flawlessly on Debian. I have solved most that can be solved. I think a lot of work has gone into this distro, I do hope over time they migrate to pure Arch, in the same way Mint now offers a Debian based edition (as opposed to Ubuntu).
