An interesting chat with ex Loose Ends founder, keyboard player, trumpeter and all round nice guy Mr. Steve Nichol. Interviewed by Groovadelica's Jason Eli & Paul Tilley. We got to hear about what it was like being in Loose Ends - which during the 1980's & 90's was one of the UK's most well loved and successful Soul groups. The interview also has some great advice and some funny stories from inside the music industry. Enjoy

It is so hard to explain to younger generations that how magical Loose Ends' music was at the time it first came out. The 80s and the early 90s was all about love, dancing, and enjoying life to the fullest. No FB, Insta, Handys, etc. Facebook was the clubs and discos, the parks, the streets. That's it. You wanted to say something to someone you had to go up to them and say it. Not sending a bs text, IM, etc. Lucky I was there and heard music like theirs.

Loose Ends is one of my favorite groups of all time,. They came out at a time when I didn't even know that there were black people in the UK. Their music sounded so American that I was thrown off when I first heard them speak on Soul Train back in the 80's and realized they were British. Great music, and Carl McIntosh is highly under rated as a producer. Unsung really needs to do an episode on them and Cameo...and whatever happened to Soul to Soul and Junior.

Quite honestly...Steve Nichol has always been "that 3rd guy in the group Loose Ends.." ... amazing to hear of the early beginnings of Loose Ends and learning how critical Steve Nichol was in the creation of this group. Such an AMAZING group that has contributed sooooo much to the music of the '80's, '90's and beyond. Not celebrated nearly enough for their innovative approach to production and their emotionally intense and reflective LRYICS. Strong introspective songs that touch on the aspects of male and female relationships...inspirational songs, poetic and pensive...and caribbean-influenced rhythms...electronically driven creations....a truly ONE-OF-A-KIND sound. In my opinion...one of the BEST recording collabortives of ALL TIME.

My mind was blown about Steve playing keys/over dubs on ‘Don’t Give Me Up’ by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes 😮. I wish the guys asked Steve about the session when Silent Talking (Instrumental) was recorded in Philly. Apparently many top musicians from the local area turned up to listen to the drummer who was something special. Back in the mid to late 90s I had a nice chat with Steve Nichol on Kingly Street (Behind Regent Street) in Westminster, London when he was on his way to a record label gig at Studio Studio Valbonne. He was very polite and appreciated that I even remembered who he was.

The contrast between Loose Ends UK and US chart success was an indicator to a lot of Black British talent at that time, it suggested success was across the Atlantic not at 'home'. America was like a Mecca in our minds for black creativity and culture. In fact the Black Brits were still conflicted as to where was 'home'. But Loose Ends was on rotation in the community through the sound systems and illegal pirate radio stations, so they were loved more among blacks than the whites. It wasn't until the mid to late 90's that Black Brits were unapologetically Black working class British and looked to onshore mainstream success over any hopes of breaking America. But Loose Ends are pioneers that the nowadays generation should know about.

From around 1985-1991 4 Great Albums/CDs consecutively. They probably didn't sell as many records as: other groups but I can't name any that were better, maybe SOS but around the mid 80s they were fading (Mary leaving). You could play almost every song on their albums and you definitely could play Zagora and Look How Long entire Albums/CDs.
