Antonia Apodaca, 93, and Cipriano Vigil, 76, are the two eldest and best known masters of traditional Northern New Mexico music. Over the course of an afternoon jamming together, they teach other new (but old) songs, play traditional favorites, and have a great time!

Viva Antonia!!! ( I know she has passed away now, but her memory and legacy live on. So, I would rather say "Viva" to the spirit of this extraordinary woman.)

Grandma Toni (my wife's grandma) was such a character. Will never forget the Saturday 10 years ago when she "took over" my then 5 year old's birthday party. I left the house long enough to get some extra refreshments and when I got back a fiesta had broken out :) She had enlisted a Presbyterian minister friend of mine (with his guitar) and a couple praise bank musicians who had stopped by. In my little 1500 square foot house I had 30 people singing with Grandma Toni. Good times

Her son, Mr. Apodaca, taught at my elementary school Longfellow. He used to live on the same street as me WAYY back in the day. I remember meeting his mom at our chorus practice in his classroom. Great memories. She was a lovely lady then and still is now.

Antonia would make a wonderful entertainer at social events. She is truly a treasure of old Mexico and makes one wonder what she looked like 70 years ago when she may have started her career as a singer musician .

John Andrews She was born and raised in New Mexico, her music is not from "old Mexico", it's Spanish language music from New Mexico. Has some similarities with Mexican music, but the distinctions are clear.

People from New Mexico are VERY different from people of Mexico. Most people are descendants from the original Spanish settlers from 1598. Both Vigil and Apodaca are founding family names. Look up Juan de Onate to get further information.

There used to be a living treasure in Northern New Mexico, Medanales, New Mexico by the name Eusebio Martinez, a great musician and even sang la entrega de los novios at weddings many years ago. He has since passed away. Don't know if he left any recordings.

The song at 24:18 was written by Santiago Jimenez Sr. of San Antonio, so it's exciting to hear it recorded in northern New Mexico. Santiago Jimenez Jr. once mentioned having visited a woman in New Mexico who, like him, played accordion. I wonder if it was Antonia Apodaca.

Trujillo was maiden name and Josephine Martinez who had the landmark house lol we’d go visit every summer when I was a kid. This Toni reminds me of my grandma - they grew up same time same place . My grandma played the guitar too and loved to have so many pictures pictures on the wall. Her personality reminds me of grams.
