Hey don’t underestimate your pull in the hobby. Your one of a handful of people on RU-vid introducing whole new generation of CB users to the fun. With the pandemic stuff my plans for getting a ham license were squashed because our club isn’t conducting exams. So in May I pulled out my CB that has sat for 15 years and got back on the air with the help of your channel. I’ve earned a World Radio Club membership and had over 500 dx contacts since May with your help. GMRS is the next step for big com company’s and they would do well to reach out to excellent mentors like you. Thank you Eric.
AWESOME VIDEO - because of my location, property size, and the fact I am always outdoors, I got my FCC license - WRDC307 - [ Radio Service ZA - General Mobile Radio (GMRS) - ] I picked up some Motorola used handhelds, had them programmed. I highly recommend the GMRS = License. My Elderly parents live down the dirt road from my, and when my mom took ill, these radios afforded us the ability to keep constant contact, no matter the time, power, weather, location. plus a lot of GMRS people are surprisingly around with repeaters - This is a wonderful video !! your wife deserves a lot of credit! Cheers from MidCoast Maine !
I told you a while back you’ve made it big time when President is sending you products , now you have Midland on board . You’re the Radio Whisperer hahaha. Great job buddy
GMRS radios are great when it comes to clarity and range (with the proper wattage), however, you will find pretty quickly that they are in no way similar to CB radio. Unless you are in a specific environment for use (i.e. Jeep club, carnival, fair, family use, etc), that there is no traffic what so ever. It is very difficult to get a radio check or engage in out of the moment conversation on GMRS frequencies. They are most definitely case specific and are usually tone coded so that only the family, business, or event can hear/transmit. Lately, with the changes in rules by the FCC you will find that many businesses that don't want to invest in true business radios will use GMRS radios which also tarnishes the frequencies in the city (Chic-Fil-A on channel 3 being one culprit, making using SCAN very obnoxious). If you are looking to communicate with general public, GMRS is not the solution, CB all the way.
Looking forward to it will be waiting have been curious about them radios for a while I like the show and tell seems to work better for me thanks to you and Midland
Congratulations Eric on hooking up with Midland products I absolutely love their products have used them for decades.I am currently using a Midland model 13-898-23 channel single sideband radio as a base unit in my house and I absolutely love it it's all I need.I hope you have continued success with your new adventures will be looking forward to your videos.
This must be meant to be. I just got my gmrs license and am eager to get on the air. My philosophy is if you make a video on it, it’s probably pretty good. Thank you for all the information on radios you have given me over the years. You have officially influenced my new hobby. Thank you again
......and that's why Mrs. Far Point Farms deserves respect! 👐👐 GMRS?? More alphabet soup to this newbie....I think I need to go back and watch your older videos and catch-up OR you might consider doing a "tell it to me as if I'm a 5 year old" video radio primer..??? Hot as heck here in Boston, several days at 90+ (thanks, Fay). Stay safe and well.
Excellent video! I;ve my GMRS license since 2004 and I have been exposed to GMRS since 1993 when our Town Watch migrated over from CB. At that time the equipment was FCC part 90 commercial PLMR. Yes technically we were not all licensed, but the FCC had no cause to say otherwise. Have a Good Day from WQAI363
I can see why companies will work with you although you consider yourself small potatoes. You make great informative videos that are easy to understand. You come across very professional. Your into is great. is that you singing? Keep up the good work
I love GMRS I got a midland base camp radio on my dresser it's pretty cool picks up a lot of chatter can't wait to see how far you can communicate with GMRS in the mountains
Regrettably I have gone through numerous hand held Midland GMRS radios and they all have not lasted more than a year. We use it for communications on our 23 acre property. The antenna’s have been the BIG failure point. GXT1000VP4, was our most recent purchase back in December of 2018. I have switched to the BTECH MURS-V1 Two-way radio. Replaceable antenna, programmable, longer lasting batteries than the GMRS Midland Radio's. I know I am talking apples and oranges here. But I thought I'd share my findings. I've only had them since October 2020. So the jury is still out. Hasppy with them so far. (Other than the antenna breaking on the Midland GMRS, as I understand the FCC requires a fixed atenna, I had no problems with the radio's. We liuve on a hilly poperty so range wasn't so good.)
Midland needs to step it up with their handheld radios because none of them are repeater capable and they really seem more like glorified kiddie-talkies. I had some GXT-1000's that I was so disappointed in that I literally gave them away. Channels 1-22 are the actual channels minus the 8 repeater input frequencies (because it doesn't use them). Channels 23-50 are just a pre-programmed rehash of the previous 22 channels and DON'T give you any actual extra frequencies. To make matters worse, you can't delete them or lock them out either. It's just a marketing gimmick gone bad. I do like the Midland mobiles and I always enjoy your channel.
Very cool Eric ! Up here in Canada we do not require a license for GMRS radios . All the more reason to get into the hobby ! There's also no repeaters up here in Canada . I'm interested to see how good the range is !
Farpoint Farms this cool Midland Gmrs radio series is cool my hobbys are painting pictures and lisining to shortwave and ssb iam thinking about getting my ham license I have 4 shortwave receivers iam thinking about getting my ham license I have 4 shortwave receivers iam thinking about sangean ATS 90 9x 2 Mw lw fm air SW ssb 6 bands receiver or the Tecsun Pl 660 mw lw fm air SW ssb 6 bands receiver or
GMRS is new to me. If I knew locals bs with on the cb and the guys I hunt with were interested in using em I’ll more than likely look into getting one. Do you need to check the swr like you do for a cb? Do you need a swr meter made specifically for GMRS? Lot to learn.
OK, now I have reached the end, or at least the present, in the CB radio series. Eric, this has been most helpful, and I thank you for it. I went to Patreon to try and flip you a few bones, by way of saying thanks. I have never used that before, and I can't seem to figure it out. It is easy enough top set up a recurring donation, but I don't want to turn you into a monthly bill, haha. I can't seem to figure out how to simply flip you a one time ten bone donation, to say "thanks, let me buy your next lunch." I'll keep trying, and see if I can figure that out. Anyway, setting up my base station. The components ordered are pretty much everything you said. I don't know any experts, so I am just taking your word for everything. I said, under another video, that I'd like to ask you questions, but I understand if you don't want to communicate directly with me, as I am a random internet person from your perspective. I get it. But at this point, I have figured most of it out and only one question remains...so let me try to ask it here. Ordered components: Bearcat 980SSB, that ebay power supply that scared you because of bare wires, Antron 99, 75 Ft of RG213, 4 element grounding plane, SWR meter, 8 foot galvanized ground rod, 8 gage grounding wire...I have the whole nine yards coming, exactly the way you said to set it up. I am down to the decision on mounting, and that's where my remaining question lies. : Terrain is Winston Salem. I have a chimney in the middle of my roof. I have a hammer drill and I am not afraid to mount to the chimney. Is there any advantage to attaching to the facia board instead, like you did? Also: Why the ten foot fence post? Is that just for height? Do I need that much if I am starting from the chimney? Do I need any at all, if I am starting that high? Would a 5 foot post do? Finish me off, brother. How would you mount this thing if you were me?
A chininy mount is great! The higher the better so 10 foot pole is good, but if you have to go with a 5 footer that will work too. Your setup sounds perfect! Thanks for watching all the videos and commenting. I can't reply to all of them, but I do really love reading them! And thanks for the kind words about the midnight cafe. I loved Art Bell, and try hard to make a show he would approve of.
@@FarpointFarms Roger that, Army! Thank you for the advice. Truth be told, though, the reason it sounds prefect is that I got every bit of it from you. I am an absolute newb, who knows nothing yet. All I have done is write down what you were saying, and follow instructions. Radio came today. It is mounted in it's position next to my desk. Haha, but it is sitting there dark, because the inverter isn't here yet. Hoping to get everything in, in time to climb up on the roof and mount it all over the weekend. Who knows, maybe on a good day, I'll catch a signal from Grandfather! I am looking forward to getting into this for a couple of reasons. First, the VA came through for me and that allowed me to retire early...so I am bored out of my skull and in need of a hobby. But second, I like the idea of having a line of communication with the world in the worst case. That's why I picked a hobby that does double duty. And you, brother, have been a HUGE help in getting me started. You're alright...for Army! Haha...Go Navy!
Awesome. Congrats I have a Midland 115 and do t know how to set the repeaters up on the radio. The repeaters show Rex and tx but the radio is asking for something else Dc and tc I think. What am I missing.
I would make the 15 watt radio with the 6dB antenna your base and the 40 watt with the 3dB antenna your mobile. Base antenna has the height and with the 6dB gain it would almost be like putting out 60 watts. The mobile with 3dB would be like 80 watts. You should get better coverage IMHO.
New to GMRS, love your videos by the way. I see places touting the Radioddity QB25 as GMRS but I see it has TX/RX on two Ham Band frequencies. Have you ever looked at this radio before? Or anyone on here have? I have a ham and GMRS license so thought hey, be good to have a radio that did both. But maybe it's one of those that just appears that way. I can't seem to find reliable information on it. Contacted Radiooddity directly, they appeared to say that they would TX/RX on all four bands. Would be nice to hear from someone who owns one and could confirm.
I know a lot of old time cb'ers do not like the newer GMRS radios. Truth is our electronic technology is just better today and performance is superior. Unfortunately the craftsmanship and build can't hold a candle to old time CB radios. You are going to find these new GMRS radios will transmit further than CB even at sideband; plus they are so much smaller and car friendly. That said, as a hobby I'll still take the CB radio as long as the ionosphere does its job. GMRS passes through it. Beta was better quality, but VHS tapes were less expensive and had greater movie title quantities and therefore won battle. Today if there is more GMRS traffic it will win. In my area, North Jersey, I don't hear much on my GMRS compared to my CB, so for me CB wins based on traffic. I'm looking forward to the reviews. Stay healthy!
I'm wondering about that as well. Better preformace, but due to less users, maybe not the option for everyone. Still I can't wait to test it out and see what is out there.
I'm still trying to get a radio check on my 980 bearcat. I'm in far SW FL. So I have dead zones on about 3 sides. Most action is Super bowls or skip. But that's limited and that in my truck. Have an A99 and rg 213. But lack a power source.
I'm on a 980 bearcat in NE FL, pretty decent traffic. Check your SWR levels. Also, try going close to the interstate, that's where I get the most activity.
Hello sir i own a pair of cp200 uhf and also another pair of cp200 vhf. My question is. I got my GMRS lisence and i got my callsing . I also have a pair of baofeng radios. Witch radios m i able to use with my gmrs lisence can i use any of my radios and programmed them and use them

@@FarpointFarms Cool!! Bet it's hard to get parts for. Other than the body it probably uses most of the same mechanical parts as the car. I've been into VW's all my life, but the air cooled ones. I've had 3 bugs and a bus.
hey eric go to dpdproductions.com for a good base station antenna for gmrs it works great i have one but it not up im not able to put it up or my ham antennas have a few buddies that use that antenna an they say its great i have 2 of the 40watt midland mobiles i dont think were are a hour or so away from each other im in abingdon va 15mi from bristol va/tenn
