This video is an introduction to the life and works of Danish architect and designer Finn Juhl. His furniture is without doubt some of the best in Scandinavian design history and with his organic aesthetics he introduced Scandinavian Modern to America.

Finn Juhl was hugely inspired by the artists of the time Jean Arp and Picasso and no other set of chairs shows it more than this. Thank you

Yeah, you’re absolutely right. He was indeed inspired by artist like arp when designing chairs like the Pelican. Organic modernism at its best!

Aalto's chairs would definitely show it more. You're welcome.

I watched this video because I have a Finn Juhl inspired sofa, the Poet style. I bought it new about ten years ago. I had never heard of this designer until the shop assistant told me that it was made in his style. Then I started to embroider a cushion for the sofa with the letters Finn Juhl in a beautiful Art Deco script............... I didn't finish it! Ah well, perhaps one day.

Sounds like a nice sofa! Was it a new or old one?

@@ScandinavianDesign101 It was new, basically a copy, in two shades of green. It would have been nice to have an original!

Well, allow me to be the first to write something THANK YOU, I have some of the British wooden furniture that was really inspired by Scandi stuff, bedroom suites and some chests of drawers from the 1960s and 70s (used to make a less boring kitchen btw) .... and also at the start of lockdown I repaired 3 early 1960s flat pack walnut frame chairs that my Mum and Dad had when they were newly wed (IKEA pouffes cut up make EXACTLY the right size cushions for them). I thought they were probably Swedish from a company called Dom ? but in cleaning them up, I found they were made in Yugoslavia ..... we're from Yorkshire where cheap is the principal design aesthetic so no surprise then! ... anyway, again well done, I looked through so many Danish etc. 'mid-century modern' sideboards on eBay, I've been looking for little tutorials like yours to find out who the 'eck designed them and how they were related to each other! you must have known I was in need, cheers, Colin x

Thanks for the video. Its great. You talked about his popular seating pieces, but what about tables? For example FD 540.

🐐🫰🏼😍 love love FJ as well but he is SO expensive! My favorite is the Pelican, and the Chieftain. What do you think about his reading chair? ☝🏻

We have so many favorites when it comes to Juhl. The NV46 is extremely beautiful! The reading chair i also really nice. Love the way he reinvented the art of "sitting".

any really good stuff in his late career, well the japan chair and sofa are the only good things he made in those years in my opinion they’re beautiful in their simple lines, very modern reinterpretation of japanese sensibility into a scandinavian one, like a calligraphy

Yeah, that's true. We love the Japan series! Great shape and quality even though it was made for serial production.

btw, watching another of your programmes showed, I had misremembered the firm 'DUX' as 'DOM'. Thank you for your heart, of my own organs -I only have a little brain to lend.
@ScandinavianDesign101
@ScandinavianDesign101 3 года назад
😊 Well, Dux is a quite strange name for a Swedish company. It’s Latin and stands for leader, don’t really understand why they choose that name?? Dom actually mean judgement in Swedish 😂
@MrVorpalsword
@MrVorpalsword 3 года назад
@@ScandinavianDesign101 dom has a similar meaning to dux (in my mind from a half remembered latin lesson years ago) but I think I confused it with Domus & I probably didn't believe a Swedish firm would go for a word that I relate to Mussolini TTYTT, I think they referred to the latin noun as 'dux-ducis' at school. We get 'Duke' from it, he got Duce. btw, I came across a designer called Miroslav-Navrátil t'other day on-line, he sounds a bit Yugoslav .... do you know him? (on second thoughts he sounds a bit like a Czech tennis-player)
@ScandinavianDesign101
@ScandinavianDesign101 3 года назад
Know very little about Navrátil, have only seen some of his extraordinary fiberglass chairs. Yeah, it’s a bit Czech tennis player over that name 😂 Perhaps he played doubles with Miloslav Mečíř 😂 By the way, DUX was founded by the chocolate tycoon Efraim Ljung, a Swedish version of Willy Wonka...
