The Following Video is a continuation of my series on Classical German Philosophy and German Idealism with Dr. Corey W. Dyck who is the acting Graduate Chair in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario, in Canada. Dr. Dyck navigates us through a detailed discussion of the Life and Philosophy of the German Philosopher Christian Wolff (1679-1754).
Dr. Corey W. Dyck specializes in the history of German philosophy, with an emphasis on the eighteenth century. His most recent research has focused on issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind in the period from Leibniz to Kant, in addition to recovering the contributions of women and under-represented groups to German philosophy in this period. Dr. Dyck has a forthcoming monograph, entitled The First Fifty Years of German Metaphysics (OUP), which considers developments in German philosophy between roughly 1700-1750, focusing on the interpretation, reception, and impact of Wolff's Deutsche Metaphysik.

Studying the early moderns under Professor Dyck at Western was one of the most rewarding intellectual experiences of my life. Had he never granted me special permission to enroll in his Critique of Pure Reason seminar as an undergraduate, I’d have never read about the Kantian structure of psychoanalysis and probably would have never pursued a career in psychotherapy.

I actually have three books, by your guest (Dr. Corey W. Dyck). For many years I have been interested in Christian Wolff and enjoy his work more than those of Leibniz and Kant; hence my youtube pseudonym. Thanks for sharing this interview...

The great philosopher Christian Wolff was my great-great-great great great grandfather. I've heard many good things about him, but also many bad ones. You can say my grandfather was a very interesting and smart man, but he was also persecuted in Prussia and by the Catholic Church for leaving a comment against them that was considered blasphemy. He was also a pietist who started his own order of church. Later on, he was removed from his own church and thrown out on his knees. Some amazing things about my grandfather are that the Declaration of Independence is slowly based on his ideas, and there is a moon mountain named after him. He had many accomplishments, but what bugged him the most were certain people who would not let him pray to God. He was a true Christian and loved to call people out on the true meaning of Christ. He didn't want people to be uneducated; he wanted everyone to have an education and not fight in wars against each other. the Catholic Church still to this day persecutes my grandfather for the things he said due to the church's education system at the time a lot of his ideas were drowned by Church officials at the time still to this day Catholic schools have nothing good to say about my grandfather that is a sad thing to say for someone who was a visionary for his time
