A quick and by no means complete run through the various upscale methods. I would have tried Supir but it isn't compatible with my GPU.
Maras AI McBoaty Upscale/Refiner is available here or by using Manager.

Thanks to David for stewing the noodles down to a single node!
A more detailed Video on the node is here:

Workflow is here, the various methods are lined up for you to try.

Hi Rob, fantastic video as usual ! I loved the "not terribly complicated" 🤣 Thanks for the shout out (again) 🎉

thanks, I was trying to upscale the image perfect, but now I learned there is a tradeoff. You made me relax and breathe.

wonderful work as always. love your explanations. you happen to have the original upscaling you did ? the convoluted one. i'm curious about how you RE-merged the tiles. I have a few use cases where I want to merge my own collage via tiles. I figured out how to break out the tiles into separate images using batch image nodes... but not how to re-combine them.

Here's the original Node and Noodle version. It has the recombine on the right. The numbers are driven by Math nodes but you should be able to work out how the compositing works. Essentially pad the image for outpainting and drop a tile into the image extension. drive.google.com/file/d/1ynND0H9hFYirm3BHc0xyqxNhqZJxRKz6/view?usp=sharing

From seeing your workflow, my machine screams "Oh Sh!t 🤪". I usually upscale the image then refine each specific area with Krita for better control of the outcome of the refined image.

Maybe you didn't watch until the end, the workflow is reduced to a single node. I would do the same as you and do further edits on the upscaled image to refine faces, hands and other parts.

It seems much better than Ultimate SD Upscale, like a full upscale instead of a fake upscale, but it has more tiling issues whereas Ultimate SD Upscale has no tiling issues at all. Not sure why im getting tiling issues with the boaty node.

Slightly different to Ultimate as Ultimate seems to be aimed at photographs and changing the image as little as possible. McBoaty assumes a degree of change in exchange for quality. It will do any proportion but it is best to use a reasonably developed image at say 1280 to 1526. I will do a video just on the node as it has other tricks.

The biggest need I have in upscaling is in images where there are small faces (the faces are few pixels in the original) and need to be "created" by the upscale. For example trying to create a painting like 'The Night Watch". Leonardo AI is great at this, but it would nice to be able to do this in ComfyUI directly. Have you encountered this and/or do you know how to accomplish this in ComfyUI?

Sorry, missed this comment. I cut the faces out and refine them before dropping them back in again. Distant ones I do in groups... it depends on how big they are in the image.
